Unlike most major announcements, God of War Laufey is not years away.
Rumours originally speculated the spin-off game, starring Kratos’ wife Faye, would launch in 2027. And while Sony didn’t attach a release window to this week’s 20 minute gameplay reveal, Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier said you shouldn’t read into that.
Writing on Bluesky, the reliable reporter said:
“FWIW I wouldn't read too much into God of War Laufey not getting a release date or window – in contrast to a lot of other big announcements, this one isn’t years away.”
Obviously anything can happen in game development, and Schreier is being very specific with his words here, but this all suggests to me that 2027 is very much on the agenda to me.
I think showing 20 minutes of interrupted gameplay from the start of the adventure is evidence enough of that, to be honest. That’s a real strong sign of intent from Santa Monica Studio that certainly implies the game is close to being complete.
There are exceptions, of course, but Sony has generally skewed towards announcing titles once they’re closer to release. I imagine we’ll all probably be playing Laufey a year or so from now.
I do wonder if 2027’s going to be a little bit like 2020, when both The Last of Us 2 and Ghost of Tsushima launched prior to the PS5.
We could see a similarly strong lineup with God of War Laufey and Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet dropping before the PS6. Exciting stuff!
