It's becoming increasingly clear that The Last of Us: Part II is going to be an emotional, stressful journey from beginning to end for most players. It's a game about getting revenge in a hostile environment after the world fell apart, and as its protagonist, it seems like Ellie really will be the centre of all this attention.
During an interview with PlayStation Official Magazine, which has been kindly reported by WCCFTech, Naughty Dog's narrative lead and co-writer Halley Gross refers to her work colleagues as wizards when it comes to game development. "Every day I’m working, I get the opportunity to work with designers, and animators, and sound guys and character artists, and we’re all working toward a vision about how do you make the most complex, nuanced character in a videogame?"
She then goes on to discuss the character of Ellie in greater detail, whom of which is said to be driven by love. "What we’re really trying to do is challenge Ellie to see who she can become when she grows up in such a hostile environment. And part of writing is, very unfortunately, torturing your characters, putting them in hard situations, and testing their values and testing their drive. So while we love Ellie, and we’re really excited to see her grow up, we’re certainly not going to coddle her."
It certainly sounds like some very tough times are ahead of Ellie. How do you reach to these comments? Put on a thick skin in the comments below.

She can handle it. It's not like she needs our help, we're just along for the ride.
@Eldritch
But without our help then she has no inputs to move or fight.
@Xaessya Says you.
lara croft is still the best woman in video games, and she likes men.
@TheBuzz and liking men makes what difference? Or are you just upset you ain't got no chance of getting your jollies off with a pixelated person?
Don’t forget the gameplay eh?
@Eldritch I think on analysis the buzz and lara must both like men.
@TheBuzz Jesse from Control is what Lara should have been like in the new games to be fair.
will we ever have a TLOU 2 article where some people don't get salty that a girl happens to love another girl romantically?
Unless you have to kill Joel, I wont have a problem taking out anyone else.
The amount of people butthurt about Ellie being the lead and gay blows my mind.
@Splat That are the same people that call others snowflakes. 😉
I know its a joke that people can get triggered about something like that in this age. Especially so called Western people who think you can say everything. But should not be able too be themselves. It makes sad too see this in the West... 😩
One of my most fascinating female characters of this gen is, now bear with me, Peebee from Mass Effect Andromeda. And I'm not even kidding. I grew to like her character.
I cant wait to play this. And hopefully eventually multiplayer!!
The first is my favourite game, but it'll take a lot to beat Arthur Morgan as my favourite character in gaming. Solid Snake being 2nd.
I hope 'complex' isn't a synonym for 'whiny'
Fell in love with the dynamic between Ellie and Joel in the first one, played through it multiple times on PS3 and PS4 but I have to admit, all this "dire, stressful world"-thing going on (I get it, it's the world they live in) might have me "stressed out of my comfort zone". Meanwhile I'm playing my Switch with more joyful games and will watch the inevitable cutscene-compilation on Youtube some day. That said: I wish them all the success in the world.
@Splat I don't get it. I don't care for gender or sexuality when it comes to videogames. It's fictional characters and as long as they are well written and believable in their own universe, I don't mind any of that. I just despise when politics, gender and sexuality take a place in the spotlight front and center above all else, no matter what direction any of it goes. But so far, I don't think that's the case here, it might just be "too grim" for my personal taste, as I enjoy unwinding and taking a breather from the real world with all that political garbage and people devoid of any skill or willingness to argue like grown ups just throwing tantrums.
@ApostateMage 100% with you, PeeBee was awesome.
@ApostateMage I definitely agree!
