Last week’s trailer for Iron Man VR did not paint the game in the best possible light, but as soon as we learned that it’s a collaboration between Sony and Marvel Games – the same fruitful partnership which ultimately resulted in last year’s Marvel’s Spider-Man – we knew that all would be okay. And as some hands on impressions spill out of the United States, we’re feeling more confident than ever.
Speaking with Kotaku, developer Camouflaj’s Ryan Payton explained: “We’re not making a rail-shooter. We’re not making an amusement park game. We’re not making a short demo or an experimental Iron Man ‘experience’. We’re making a full game with a deep sandbox, with a deep story with plenty of great missions and great cinematics.”
According to previews, you play the game using two PlayStation Move controllers. In order to propel yourself upwards, you point the motion wands at the ground and then pull the triggers. Obviously in order to fly and attack then you’re going to need to use a combination of each hand, with one pointed behind you in order to accelerate you forwards, and the other aiming at enemies.
To get you up to speed, there’s a practice area set around Tony Stark’s Malibu Mansion, but the main mission shown to press sees you leaping out of a plane, blasting foes out of the sky, then bending its wings back into shape. It looks and sounds superb, with Payton citing Resident Evil 7’s outstanding PlayStation VR mode as an inspiration. Hype!

As soon as they said it had been in development for a few years I had high hopes for it. I can’t wait to play it.
Edit: Those gifs on the Kotaku and PS Blog pages look amazing!
I couldn't believe the timing of it tbh. Just three days before State of Play I said to my nephew (we both own headsets) that if I were Sony I would approach Marvel about doing an Iron Man VR game, he fits it so well. Turned out Sony were a couple of years ahead of me.
The trailer last week already has a million views on Youtube so Sony could well be selling quite a few headsets off the back of this alone.
I feel flying around the skies blasting stuff is going to be vomit inducing.
But a fun, memorable vomit inducing time. Like a roller coaster.
This is sounding pretty good!
Hype this could be very fun
I want to try it myself now!
i wonder how well those flight controls will hold up, using the move controls like they are describing may need a bit of room so we may have no choice but to stand to control iron man properly.
Man! PSVR is KILLING it.
Three games alone that can sell headsets, in my humble opinion...
Iron Man
Everybody's Golf
No Man's Sky
There's more, of course. But I have a feeling those three games will sell headsets.
Bundles are coming. Bet.
All first impressions of this game have been super positive!!! Cant freaking wait
@huyi Previews are very positive about the controls. PS Move usually freaks out when you point it behind your back but sounds like they've found a way around that here.
Does sound like it'll be more comfortable to play while standing, agreed. I'm sure they've taken that into consideration, though.
@SirRealDeal I think Blood & Truth will be a big title for them, too. Looks amazing!
Dang, I might just have to get a VR for this. I'd love to try it with Megaton Rainfall as well.
@SirRealDeal yep! Pre-orders are live for Everybody’s Golf VR. £24.99. Just stuck my order in. Can’t wait.
@get2sammyb hope they have, it's hard to stand with the small space i have lol
@Giygas_95 why haven't you got one already? 2019 is gonna surprise you.
Wow. I was totally expecting an on-rails shooter...something like a cross between Rez and Rush of Blood. Free roam sounds amazing! And full 360 degree movement? How in the hell?! Early previews sound very promising! Can’t wait to try this out!
I admit when I saw the trailer the first thing I thought was it was going to be a ridiculously short onrails demo type game but reading this has totally shut me up.Now I can't wait!
Well colour me impressed (and also wrong)- the flying looks rather nice!
All these games and no man sky's are looking sick. This Christmas it will be all about psvr. They will sell like spades. Now I have to mention and praise no mans sky Murray. He got it all from the Internet bit now after two years he is hitting it. I was never interested in no man's sky but now I'm buying it and will be playing it in vr.it seems a monstrous experience just like skyrim. Sonys support for vr has been nothing short of incredible.
@huyi
From what I’ve read from the previews, the HUD gives you an “Iron Man immersive warning grid” to help you maintain spacing.
And now we’re being treated to some NMS VR impressions.

Good times!
HYPED HYPED HYPED
@get2sammyb
I've been worried about that one for reasons I've stated here.
Alas, a new blog post on Sony's page has alleviated that specific worry.
Yeah I'm definitely all in for Blood & Truth now.
Sounds pretty good, but I hope next time we get a mode where we’re on the ground too. I don’t want to just fly.
In hindsight, they should’ve fleshed out the State of Play trailer and ended with this, then. By the sound of it, this has much more potential than it seemed like initially.
You know, I never realized before thinking about playing this that Iron Man’s flight.. just doesn’t work. Not because of physics, but because human eyes are just naturally pointed completely orthogonally to the direction of travel.
Maybe this is all addressed in the materials I don’t have time to go through, but are we expected to play this with our head craned uncomfortably upward, or are we just supposed to suspend our body-sense to role-play as someone who has eyes in the top of his head (as I guess Tony Stark probably would in “real life” with an in-helmet screen)? Curious to see how well or poorly that’d feel to play.
Sick is bad, right? No?
@lixei32 and yet people all around are saying that the first state of play was poor, yes poor for non vr users but for the rest of us it was great, PSVR needs the attention and the games to do well, i guess a lot of people don't realise that.
@lacerz well my camera sensors will be off the charts with the space I'm gonna have 😂 I'm gonna have to heed some warnings to people around me especially when using the wands lol already hit my bf the other day playing gun club vr while reloading.
@Fath I'm more concerned about the manovers we are going to do in the sky while shooting stuff, hard falling, sharp turns, and all sorts, just don't eat dinner before you play iron man 😂
I will believe when I see it. Also I have no interest in VR. If it can't be played normally with controller, no way I am buying it.
@ILoveVideoGames
Hahaha.
Okay then.
I was quite worried with such a weak showcase during the state of play thingy, but they just said the game isn't everything I was afraid it would be. Count me in!
Makes me wonder what went wrong during the reveal.
I understand it was a teaser. But it's VR, and when you show only 10 seconds gameplay that can be mistaken for a simple on-rails shooter, people get the wrong first impression. They should've shown more of the stuff that's in that article on Kotaku.
No Man's Sky VR
Iron Man VR
Everybody's Golf
Blood and Truth
Dreams
To name a few. I have bought around 30 or so PSVR games to date but it's getting too hard to keep up with the VR content and that's awesome. I've still not got round to picking up Tetris Effect and Beat Saber yet. Love it.
@JoeBlogs Na, that would be Dreams, as we can make literally any VR experience we wanted.
This is the first VR title that looks somewhat interesting to me.
@get2sammyb
I like what I read!!! I’m also glad to see how Sony is pushing/believing in VR... but I wonder if they’ll want to start from scratch or make PSVR (1) compatible with PS5, meaning all new releases would be PSVR1 and PSVR2 compatible.
On my side, I think they should release a new PSMove-like controller compatible with old and new VR and have the wireless (??) and better resolution of the new VR headset push people toward the new version.
I don’t think they can ask people to invest in VR again and hope developper to produces AAA games without a big installed base.
@SirRealDeal Dont forget Concrete Genie it has two VR modes. 😁
@KorsaRaph Trade in maybe?
Soon as I read about using the move controllers as thrusters, a smile came across my face. Sounds awesome.
I get closer every year to finally pulling the trigger on a PSVR purchase. I'm not sure if I should as I still only have the base PS4, but if I don't cave before this gen is out, I see myself getting one when I pick up a PS5.
I have a psvr and I try to buy every exclusive so I guess I'll pick this up, just as soon as I can afford a pair of move controllers that is.
NMS, this, I mean, it's as if State of Play wasn't bad like most people were saying 🤔
