The Game Awards 2018 was another impressive event from creator Geoff Keighley, blending gongs with game reveals and a general celebration of gaming culture. There’s a ceiling for how good this kind of show can possibly be, and the former Bonus Round host is very close to achieving it.
It’s only right, then, that he continues to be rewarded with outstanding viewing figures – and this year’s show saw overall viewership increase by an incredible 128 per cent worldwide. In fact, according to the host, over 26.2 million people streamed the event globally, which is a dizzying statistic – even if the numbers have probably been massaged.
It means that the show attracted an audience almost as large as The Oscars, although the comparison isn’t entirely fair given that the 26.5 million people who tuned in to this year’s edition of the prestigious movie ceremony were all located in North America. Either way, it means we can expect the show to return next year – and it’s something we actually look forward to these days.

So it'll be even less of an awards show now then.
Everyone tuning in for that Crash Team Racing announcement.
@AdamNovice I quite like the mix of awards and reveals personally. I think Keighley knows it would be pretty drab if it was all just men in suits saying thanks to their family.
I dunno, I'd cut some of the categories and do what's left all on stage, but I think he's got the ratio of awards/entertainment just right.
So now we can look forward to even more awards categories like -
Best Twitch player in their underwear
Best Youtuber with dyed hair
Best Twitter account by a blind gamer
Best dressed eSports team
Best mascot for an eSports tournament
The show is too long and disparate, it needs to be split into two.
Game Developers Awards
Game Players & Social Media Awards
Two 90 minute shows with a 30 minute break in between for trailers so I dont have to watch for 3:45.
Has the Academy Awards started giving out awards to Rotten Tomatoes, Matt Pat and Cinema Sins? No joke, watching Cinema Sins is better than watching some movies.
@rjejr you forgot
Best Video Game Award Show Award
@rjejr @FullbringIchigo
There are a lot of stupid awards thats for sure. 😁
@Flaming_Kaiser well you never know
I only bothered watching to see what new games/trailers they were going to reveal. Although, I must say, the awards and all the cringe was also quite entertaining. Overall I'd say they did a pretty good job this year.
That wouldn't be too hard given how the Oscars ratings have been tanking, but that's still something for Geoff to be proud of.
@rjejr
I don't know.
I see it more as a video game celebration as it could go on all day for all I care. Its fine for modern viewing of a worldwide event. I'm not sure it's meant just to be watched live like the Oscar shows used to be. Reveals make it worthwhile watching even later unlike the Oscar.
@Amusei
Same. I think they need to make the awards per se more relevant and in particular you tubers with more varied content. Also I'm not fond of public vote
@JJ2 The content creator nominees were way too limited for a category with such a broad title, they were all streamers. That needs some adjustments.
@Orpheus79V
Or they call it the Fortnite stream award haha
I wasn't crazy about the show this year, but I'm happy it did so well. It's come a long way since the Spike TV days.
I think I play at least 4-6 blockbuster games a year which gives me a buzz. Nowadays the blockbuster movies maybe 1-2 are okay ish. I love how the game industry isn't controlled by something called gamerwood! Instead it's a community where each game studio - corporate or indie has a chance to create something spectacular. Whereas in Hollywood its one templated movie chore fest after another imo. Game awards are for the gamers!
@JJ2 They could still make it a celebration of all things video games by having Youtubers, eSports players and other social media "first sellers" or whatever the heck they're called be presenters. I have no problem with who presents, that's what entertainers are for, to be in front of the camera entertaining us while 5 games get listed so one can win, but they don't need to win anything.
And I'm not opposed to the GAMES eSports players play getting awards, Fortnite, Overwatch or whatever, the GAMES deserve the awards, not the players. The players WIN AWARDS when they win tournaments. Do game developers win awards at those tournaments? I expect SSBU to win something next year, I dont' need to see an award for Best SSBU player. If I wanted to see that I'd watch a SSBU tournament. That's what tournaments are for, to declare winners and losers. And social media types get "subscribers" and "followers", that's how they win, they don't need awards either, they know who they are and what the score is.
But overall it's just too long. Breaking it up into two shows - designers and developers, heck even have a category for best "Too big to fail" company, Nitneod, Sony, EA and UBI, they make stuff too. But make another show for players and celebrities.
@Flaming_Kaiser @FullbringIchigo
Best Host of a Video Game Awards Show
Best Video Game Developer Fired by Konami
@rjejr
Yes I see your point. I'm open minded though and they decided YouTuber s deserve an award is fine by me as I may not have the experience to appreciate. The thing I can say is Fortnite streaming is a very limited way to see them and that's wrong. If they reward them then do it right.

Wutnow? The only impressive thing was how Keighley managed to stretch 1 hours worth of meaningful content into a 3 hour show. More padding than an Ubisoft game!
