it was a great year for gamers.
congrats to all nominees and winners.
tbh choosing between GOW and red dead was almost impossible and only 1 could win it,so just be happy 1 of those games won since both of them deserved it the most.
however a shame that spiderman did not win anything,but oh well,there is always 1 game that gets ignored for whatever reason and tbh the competition was very tough.
Astro Bot - the hero we need but don't deserve.
Yet another mediocre awards show, with some awards given out for something or other, now passes into the blissful ignorance of memory. I can't wait for the next one.
I think I'm glad Roger Clark won best performance. He really did an incredible job with Arthur.
Don't forget about The Game Awards sale, where neither God of War nor Astro-Bot Rescue Mission are on sale, but you can buy Starlink: Battle for Atlas on sale, b/c reasons.

Persona 5 is on sale, no doubt b/c of Jokers inclusion in SSBU.
Nintendo with the 0 awards.
Poor Spider-man.
Oh, and if MH:W is going to win RPG then they really need a JRPG category for games like Octopath Traveler and DQXI and other games most sane people refer to as RPGs. I haven't played Octopath Traveler, and I'm assuming nobody who voted for MH:W did either, they probably looked at it and thought it was a 3DS game so they skipped it.
Sony with the GOTY for both traditional gaming and Virtual reality.
They can support 2 platforms at once when they try.
Poor Vita.
@jdv95 @Splat Maybe they're planning on giving Spiderman the "Best Ongoing Game" award next year when the DLC is done.
Though maybe that should go to Tomb Raider, much more DLC. Or AC:O, another ongoing improvement game.
Sure Spiderman isn't on the awards list, but it isn't alone among big games missing out this year. Maybe if they kept the puddles in it could have gotten an award for best water.
SSBU wasn't up for anything, though it did get mentioned perhaps more than any other game last night besides GoW and RDR2. Will be interesting to see if they remember it next year for fighting or strategy game, or RPG, World of Light looks as much an RPG as MH:W.
Astro bot getting the award it deserve
Also agree with most of the award, I think octopath traveller should win the best art direction though. And best music should go to god of war/octopath traveller/detroit rather than rdr2.
@rjejr what did you think about MHW beating dragon quest for best RPG?
i think that maybe MHW should have won best ongoing game instead of fortnite so that dragon quest could win best RPG.
So what gives the game awards credentials? Who chooses this stuff? I’m not arguing what was chosen, I’m just curious as how to how it works and what makes it valid. I don’t want it to be a total joke like the oscars.
I just looked at this year and Persona 5 wasn’t a candidate for best narrative, but Horizon was. I seriously question their abilities there now.
@jdv95 See post #8.
I edited out all of the obscenities before posting it. I was close to turning off the show last night when MH:W won. As I said above I would have been fine w/ Ocotpath winning, even though I only ever played the demo and the graphics turned me off, DQXI is awesome. Not in my top 2 w/ FF7 and XC awesome, but I haven't played and enjoyed a turn based JRPG in years, I've been into the button mashing since the original KH. But everybody who plasy Ocotpath seems to love it, so if it had won Id' been ok with that. But DQXI should have won b/c not only was the main story 100 hour game good, the 40 hour after game can stand alone as it's own full priced sequel. And it was all included day 1 free. I'm going to assume nobody who voted for MH:W played past the ending credits so they missed perhaps the best 40% of DQXI.
Oops, sorry, floodgates kinda opened there.
@Jaz007 i think it's just a fan voting system.
i don't think there is a panel or jury unlike the oscars.
and tbh at the end of the day both systems are flawed since fan voting will just be a popularity contest (2016 show had overwatch beat uncharted 4 for GOTY) and a jury panel will just look at politics and play it safe.
but atleast the big winner this year was deserved and so was it's main rival.
@rjejr i see.
i can agree with you.
maybe dragon quest was just to niche.
@Jaz007 It's primarily decided by a panel of 65 game publications from around the world. There is a fan vote element, but it only makes a small portion of the results.
It was Sony's night. And, more broadly, Sony's year. While they may not be super appealing to me, there's no denying the quality of the exclusives Sony released this year.
I'm more interested in the VR games, than anything. Astro Bot and Tetris Effect both seem like good fun.
Not played GOW yet but glad to see it did so well along with RDR2.
Also, very happy to see Astrobot get some attention too.
@Ralizah if you like vr and you've not played astrobot yet get it,it's the best psvr game by a mile..what with re7,the persistence, wipeout omega collection, superhot and firewall zero hour gets an honourary mention
Don't agree with any of the winners, as predicted. It's rather boring to see such a narrow selection of games, it shows a simplistic and uniform taste in games.
What a great year for Sony with PS4 and PSVR having so many great exclusive games.
While I agree with many awards, I still think Detroit got robbed.
@ROTTIEMAN I've actually never tried VR, but I want to.
With that said, $250 - $300 is a lot of money to put out for a device when I have no idea how I'll take to it, and which only has a few games I want to play on it, most of which aren't exclusive to the platform. So, y'know, we'll see what happens. A lot of it probably depends on how many exciting new releases there are this year, and if there are any more good deals on the hardware going forward. I could definitely see myself jumping if that Astro Bot bundle goes down to $200 again.
@Ralizah Try it if you can. Most people come away very surprised.
No Spider-Man?
I'm going to carry on championing Astro Bot as that is one of The best gaming experiences I've had for a long time. God of War is utterly incredible too and feels like the best Zelda game I've played in years 😉 Also is The Messenger coming to PS4 as that's one game I've really been wanting to try out?
@rjejr is God of War not in the current weekend Christmas sale?
@Ralizah yeah it's definitely a big financial commitment but there are quite a lot of VR games now and plenty coming all the time now and whilst some are playable on the TV like Resident Evil VII, I can asure you it's a whole new experience when you are actually inside that house 😉
And all games available in PS4 best console of this generation without a doubt
@Bonbonetti you've not played God of War, Astro Bot or The Messenger then? I wouldn't say that was a narrow selection of games.
So what games did you enjoy this year?
Haven't played RDR2 but GOW and Astrobot are worthy winners, i'm on the last world in Astrobot just now and with each new area my jaw hits the floor each time!
So very happy for Cory Barlog and GoW team as that was definitely my GOTY (though closely followed by RDR2), Roger Clark did a stellar job portraying Arthur, and my brother just got Astrobot with his new VR kit, so I voted for that. Was especially pleased that Celeste and Overcooked 2 got recognition too. As for MH:W winning the RPG category though then I wasn't so impressed! Absolutely believe it deserved an award, but just not in that category - RPG should've gone to DQXI imo. We NEED separate RPG sub-categories I think. Feel bad for Spider-Man and Detroit though as they were great enough to deserve something too...I guess there were just too many good games this year (not that that is really possible from gamers' perspective lol).
