God of War antihero Kratos must have put a gagging order on the latest game’s release date, because Sony is remaining tight-lipped about the title’s launch. However, hot on the heels of a PlayStation Store leak which pointed to a 22nd March release, a Portuguese retailer has plumped up for the exact same date. Suspicious.
Now it’s possible that the aforementioned shop simply picked up on the original PS Store rumours and adjusted its product listing accordingly, but there’s also a chance that Sony’s been secretly prepping retailers about the release date. We already know that the game’s art book is set to drop on 15th March, although 22nd March is a Thursday which is unusual for major launches.
Interestingly, if you think the platform holder’s leaving things late then it’s worth noting that God of War III’s release date wasn’t revealed until late January either, and that game eventually hit stores a few months later on 16th March. Personally, we’re not convinced the new God of War is coming out on 22nd March, but there’s unquestionably some smoke now.

I still think it's coming in March.
March: from Latin Martius, Mars. Mars is the Roman God of War.
Confirmed month, now we just need to nail the exact day.
It's coming March no doubt about it, There were 5 GoW games that came out in March
Now I just don't understand why aren't they announcing it yet when they should have back at PSX
What's their plan actually?
@sinalefa Thursday = Thor's Day.
@AzlanWake13 I genuinely think they've been spooked by delays earlier in the generation. They seem terrified of announcing dates for any of their games.
I buy from Megamania. They usually have the same listings as they show up on rumors/news/other retailers. Still, it can be true, we can only hope I'll see if they answer an email with questions about the release date.
A greek retailer also has the game for 22 of March.

@sinalefa Maia and Juno were goddesses too
@Melucine Good spot!
@get2sammyb
I was actually thinking Tuesday. Tiw's Day. Tiw was identified with Mars.
Tuesday is Martes, Mardi, Martedì in other languages, again pointing to Mars. And aren't usually games released on Tuesdays?
@sinalefa Yeah they are, but 22nd March is a Thursday. It'd definitely be an unusual release date, but I wonder if they'd do it for the novelty of the "Thor's Day" thing?
Not impossible.
@get2sammyb
I forgot this one is Norse instead of Greek. Even if Kratos stil sounds like a greek name
@Octane Also Janus, but none of those were the GoW
Thursday/Thor's Day is too good to pass up on.
It's March 22nd. The original God of War also launched on March 22nd.
Would be nice to launch the reboot on the same day. The series has come full circle.
Also days don't matter in the age of digital storefronts & preorders. Destiny 2 launched on a Wednesday.
@get2sammyb And who’s fault is that? The delays themselves were not the problem. It’s the fact that it kept happening. Hopefully they get over this eventually.
@WebHead So to stop it from happening you just don't announce the date until you're 110% confident? Which is what they're doing.
It’s mid January and it’s coming early 2018. They should have a date by now. Just spit it out.
it's March for PlayStation best franchise ever worddd uppp sonnn
@WebHead What does it matter, Sony will announce a date when it's good and ready, in the meantime there's plenty of other games to play and talk about.
It better come out on March 22nd or.......hakai.
If this is true my birthday is march 12, i know what im getting☺
I think Sony is going to be waiting until the last minute to announce release dates going forward. Then they never need to publicly delay anything.
I'd have no problem with it releasing in March.
Hell, I wouldn't be bothered much if it releases in the second half of the year, like Q3-Q4. We've waited this long already.
Release dates for video games are useless. They rarely stick and if they do knowing the date isn't going to make them come out any faster.
Now i really want to play God of War 3 again, but this time on PS4, before the new game.
i think this game release on March 16 or 23
I think it's better if sony announce the release date on psx rather than on psblog.
@KratosMD Thor is the one that the general public would recognise if they wanted to make it a marketing gimmick though.
I would cry tears of joy....but naaaah, don't think so
@KingofSaiyanZ Two very different games and potentially appealing to a different audience. I know there is always a cross-over too but generally, typically Japanese games don't sell in 'big' numbers outside of Japan - more of a niche market and with a cult following.
It also doesn't make sense to sit on games for weeks, maybe even month's just because of simultaneous releases - especially if they are not in the same genre. Its often better to bring them to market when ready so that they can start to recoup their money. If it happens that someone has to decide to buy only 1 that day, then the chances are, they will still come back and buy the other later on. Others may just decide that those 2 games are worth buying that week as tey may not be buying a game 'next' month OR bought games in the previous month or two.
Looking at the release schedule for 2018, nothing particular jumps out as a day 1 purchase - only Far Cry 5 (27th Mar) is a possibility but not a day 1 for me.
The end of March already has AC: Rogue (remaster), Attack on Titan 2 and Yakuza 6 on the 20th (as well as Sea of Thieves if you own an Xbox too), Valkyria chronicles 4 on the 21st, A Way Out and Ni No Kuni 2 on the 23rd with Far Cry 5 and MLB 18 coming out on the 27th. You could argue, why release GoW that close to Yakuza 6 (2 days later) or why are they releasing Ni No Kuni 2 so close Yakuza 6, Point is, they release when ready to give gamers more choice and to start the money coming in.
God of War is looking more like a possibility for me. That's a BIG step in the right direction from my perspective because I would have dismissed it straight away if it was more 'typical' for the franchise. I really did not enjoy the games or the genre (I include DMC, Dantes Inferno etc too) but this reboot has really grabbed my attention and as I don't really enjoy Japanese games (I refer to those that are Japanese in style, story, structure etc rather than games made by Japanese studio's that are more 'universal' - like Resident Evil for example) so GoW on the 22nd is not a bad date for me - especially as its most likely to be my first 'new game' (as in release date) purchase of 2018/ April/May is looking very light at the moment too so if you only buy 1 game a month, you could pick up which ever game(s) you missed to fill that void.
Just out of curiosity, did publishers ever release AAA games on Thursdays?
@WebHead I think nobody has to do anything. They will announce it when they are ready to i think they know the reasons better then you.
@BAMozzy I think you are on to something maybe they are thinking about putting to many games out at once.
March is lining up to be a very busy and expensive month. Weve already got big games like shadow of the collossus, a way out and far cry 5 and now possibly gow!
Ah crap. Ninokuni2 and Yakuza are in March. They should spread these out a bit.
That said, it is a good problem to have.
OOO so close!!!
