The big man himself, Geoff Keighly, is back again next month with 2017's instalment of The Game Awards. Keighley's been putting together and hosting these award shows for a good few years now, spotlighting the best games and developers of the last 12 months.
The shows themselves are a little too gaudy for some people's tastes, and yes, they're usually a bit... Awkward, but we reckon Keighley does good work when it comes to promoting video games and the communities that surround them. He's really one of the only people in the industry who pushes this kind of mainstream event.
This year's show is once again set to air live from the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, a location that's sure to raise a few eyebrows on the basis of its name alone. It'll be broadcast live on YouTube, Twitch, and a bunch of other streaming sites, on the 7th December.
"The Game Awards reached over 8.5 million viewers in 2016," reads the press release, which also throws out a New York Times quote that says The Game Awards are "the Oscars of the gaming world". Is that a good thing?
Snark aside, we do look forward to The Game Awards in a weird way. We're not sure they're really trying to entertain us, the hardcore crowd, but if nothing else, they always provide a good laugh or two.
Like when Ori and the Blind Forest beat Bloodborne for best art direction.

Yes
I watch this every year and when it's over I say "never again" but a year passes and I keep forgetting the "never again" part. George Santayana was right.
Get your cringe on π«
I would've voted for Ori over Bloodborne, easily. Not hard to see why if you've actually played through both of them. Not saying Bloodborne looks bad, far from it. But up against Ori? Really?
On topic though, this guy gives me the creeps. I'm betting he's always one Zima away from drunk dialing Kojima in the middle of the night, asking what he's wearing.
There's no legitimacy to the awards due the amount of sponsorship and judges from within the industry. Besides people are more bothered by new game trailers then what actually wins.
@adf86 Yeah, I think it's pretty safe to say that the awards themselves don't mean sh*t. A nice trophy for the developers, but that's about it.
@NintendoFan4Lyf @RedMageLanakyn
more like ori.and Microsoft going blind for first party games in the forest.word up sonπ
@adf86 Isn't that the only reason we watch this in the first place? New game announcements? Couldn't care less about the awards
When the games indutry decides that it wants to be taken seriously and they have a legitimate show. With no adverts or sponsorships and its voted for by members like the Oscars then I will watch it.
3 reasons I'll watch it:
1-Trying to find the parts that will be included in Crowbcat cringe compilation.
2-Some new trailers maybe? No man's sky 2?
3-Splatoon 3 announcement.
@AFCC Agree 200% with first point.
@AFCC maybe new DS trailer? ! who knows
@pbernoos A new one again.... I hope not.
Horizon best new IP is in the pocket.
@ShogunRok always eager for those conferences to see his compilations! The weirdest one was the Sonic conference...I think I had to see it in 2 min intervals so I could bare the cringe
@pbernoos Since Kojima is a big friend of Geoff, yeah I think it might happen!
Not going to bother watching this year when Mario is unfortunately just going to walk away with everything it can, that or breath of the Wild.
Only if crash bandicoot does a jig throughout to some crap dubstep.
Will you be watching? Hell no!
I will access here and other sites after just to see what are the new announcements.
This award is a complete joke, now even more that has an award for "e-sport" and the best Youtuber, haha, pathetic.
@Octane My point exactly
Overwatch won this award last year too, but no problem, in the end Uncharted 4 had way more GOTY awards overall.
@PS_Nation Watch the language -Tasuki-
Absolutely. GK really knows his stuff.
Maybe we will get another I love you Jeff.
But i would like for those things where characters are getting rewards with 30-40 sec cgi.
@ShogunRok Eh, you can throw gifs all you want, i already said BB is not a bad looking game at all. Ori just looks more original. BB is Gothic dark souls, which has been done before a few times. Ori wins on originality.
@RedMageLanakyn @ShogunRok your both mad, videoball had easily the best art style last year.
You guys do realize The Game Awards is when a previous war thought ended will continue for one final showdown something that angers many Prob even a few particular mods who hate fanboy wars
The Horizon Vs Zelda BoTW Fanboy Wars
All that needs to happen is for GoTY 2017
Horizon Zero Dawn
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild
Once those are shown there the War will continue for a final battle til they say one of those 2 got the title ya may not care but hey nothing like something to get some popcorn and just enjoy the Squitshow
@BLP_Software Don't hold your breath, they will probably give the award to something like PUBG just to appeal the PC crowd.
@PS_Nation Agreed. only thing this event is good for will be new trailers and announcements/update for games.
