In the lighter days prior to the GamerGate scandal, there was an image of Geoff Keighley that went viral. It showed the journalist-turned-presenter sitting uncomfortably, surrounded by Doritos, Mtn Dew, and various bits of Halo paraphernalia. Fans, as they’re wont to do, had a little fun with the picture, and thus the Doritos Pope was born.
Now, as Keighley prepares to host his annual The Game Awards, he’s revealed as part of an interview with Kotaku Splitscreen that Doritos saw a big marketing opportunity. “Doritos called up and asked would I be willing to wear the Doritos Pope outfit to host the entire show,” he said. “And I’m like, ‘Is this a serious conversation?’ They offered a bunch of money but I’m like, ‘No, we’re not going to do that.’ I don’t want to make a mockery of this show; this is to celebrate game developers.”
The interview’s actually pretty good, with Keighley outlining the challenges of finding the right sponsors without ruining the credibility of the show. We’ve always harboured a genuine respect for the Canadian: he comes in for a lot of criticism but it’s clear that he simply loves games and wants to celebrate them. (He should have said yes to Doritos, though!)

Memes that make themselves! Crowbcat would be extremely happy with this!!
Anyway I think Geoff redeemed himself...after that stupid year with that dumb actor, after the doritos screwup and treating Angry Joe like garbage...I think he now just wants to make games receive some kind of recognition and having a serious show! Yes he's awkward as hell but...can't blame him, I would be awkaward too to be honest.
And boy does he love Kojima! Expect a trailer from his lover...
Gutted.
Games = fun, get a grip Keighley. The host can make themselves the fool.
Geoff strikes again I remember the time he HUMILIATED AngryJoe by the power of words
Well, I for one welcome our new crisp overlords...
Doritos just needs to get Kojima to ask him, then he'll do it.
Yet the Hydro bot was ok?
@AFCC is “dumb actor” referring to Joel McHale? AKA the best host they ever had??
This award is a joke already.
@AFCC Do you mean the PC fanboy that always trolls consoles and then plays the victim card? Yeah, he is garbage indeed.
I think he could pull it off if he did the whole show completely dead pan wearing that. Missed opportunity!
I'm trying real l hard to see this working but it just couldn't. It would be like all of those marginally ok SNL skits that for some reason go on to become 90 minute movies that still only have 2-3 minutes of good material in them. So if he came out after a commercial break or long new trailer wearing it for 20 seconds, that's fine, but not all night, too distracting, and after the initial "ha surprise" there's nothing left.
He should so wear it for 15 seconds though.
@Krest_arisen the gaming community? It's just Keighley hosting an awards event, this is the entertainment industry not the nobel peace prize
Man... I would watch the entire thing tho if he wore it... it would give premieres and award winners so much more suspense and excitement.
@adf86 Those moments are so bad, they loop all the way around and become good again.
@Derpie1 given my hatred of Angry Joe (he's an extremely punchable man. That grin of his is abhorrent, and he looks like he's going to try and chat up your girlfriend in the pub when you've gone for a wee) I'd never heard of this. I must look it up.
@PS_Nation LEL don't know what you talking about! He prefs pc so what? Does he deserve to be treated like sh*t when interviewing a guy that should have more patience?
@MrMustardMan That show was a disaster and yeah, he is dumb xD
@Johnnycide dude some say he’s becoming Spoony or DSP!
@Johnnycide he also went to war w his own fans
@Krest_arisen i wouldn't want to watch any awards ceremony, they're all boring, even the academy film awards are generally crap
Didn't they have a soldier teabag a guy one year?
imo AJ made himself look like a fool.
@sonicmeerkat yeah pmsl
I would love to have seen him embracing the meme the way Reggie has owned his body being ready, but I know there would have been outrage from certain religious communities that are feeling threatened at this point in history
