That boring PlayStation 4 software stability update wasn’t the one that Sony teased after all, as 3D Blu-ray support is coming to the black behemoth next week. The platform holder revealed the snippet in a tweet overnight, proudly declaring that the eye-popping functionality will be made available as part of patch number v1.75. There’s no word on what other features the firmware will harbour just yet.

We’re expecting the console’s next major functionality overhaul to be entitled v1.80, so we’re going to guess that this will be more of an incremental upgrade rather than a meaty machine refresh. Either way, we’re hoping that the platform holder is going to be a little more aggressive with these improvements moving forwards – especially seeing as Microsoft has been slowly but surely pushing the Xbox One ahead.

You done good Sony. Thats all I';ve needed my Ps4 to be able to do other than what it already does
Don't care for this, I just want mp3 support.
And i dont care for this much either, i want to see DLNA so i can stream my films from PC to PS4, and USB support, I've heard an inside rumour thats its coming next month but weather that rumour holds any weight or not is yet to be seen!
Excellent News for the 4 or 5 people out of the 8 Million'ish PS4 owners out there who will use this feature i suppose SONY's priorities are all wrong with these updates 1 they take to long and 2 we get stuff that only a few people would use?! Oh well, nice to get this 1 out of the way i suppose
I hate 3D!
RIP my PS3. This was one of the only reasons I kept it connected to my primary display.
@MJR where did you hear that? I really want it too. Its the only reason why my 360 is still hooked up, which in comparison sounds like a screaming yeti next to the ps4.
@AhabSpampurse im in same boat mate, i just want to get rid of my 360 now, i hope i can next month but after plenty of disappointing PS updates im not holding my breath on it, i heard the rumour from a facebook PS fan page i follow, they say the insider who spread the rumour is usually spot on and reliable, they say it will be released around gamescom time, so next month, but we will see!
@Scollurio yep. Gravity is the single and only film it's vaguely worked for
@MJR @AhabSpampurse While I'm sure it's in the pipeline, the particular 'insider' that I suspect is being cited here isn't especially trustworthy in my opinion. I hope he's right, but best to not get your hopes up until we hear something more official.
@get2sammyb i totally agree with you, and although i have no idea who the insider is i do trust the fan page i heard it from, as they get a lot of their info from "insiders" and havent be far wrong if wrong at all so far with what they post about, however there is always a first time, so best to just wait and see what happens in the coming month!
I just need DLNA... Don't care about 3D blu-ray
Good to see Sony has listen to people, shame it'll be a feature I won't use as I don't have a 3D TV.
They clearly planned to release it with 1.80 but as xbone just released 3d blu ray support they have added this early to avoid migration from a select few. I imagine it has been ready for a while and they wanted to build up a nice bunch of features to release at the same time. I do this where I work. People are so impatient. Dev work takes time, and testing maybe even more in some cases, perhaps 3-7 days for example.
Where's my folders?
Done! No further updates required. Thanks Sony!
I still haven't gotten my PS4 to play blurays... some sort of HDCP handshake issue, back in December they said they were going to send me a disc that would fix the issue but it has YET to arrive... and no, the HDCP toggle did not fix the problem, as HDCP MUST be enabled to play movies (copyright protection measures I guess). Not a huge issue here as I use my PS3 for movies (still technically the better player according to digital foundry as it is), so not a HUGE loss, just slightly irksome
Now this gives me a reason to get a better (and bigger) TV!
This is very nice! But i personally don't care for this that much. I really hope there will come an Update that makes it able to change you're PSN ID.
Microsoft set the trend for updates and Sony follow.
I got a 3d tv but I never use it as I find unsociable with glasses on and being in complete dark room. So all this really don't bother me but it's nice to no we've got that feature back. What I want is Sony to give up with the unlimited apps and bring cd and mp3 back. God sake play station was famous from start playing cds!!!!!
@Carl-G The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Up next, MP3 and DLNA, another two features that only a few people will use. You can be sure that these features will be added, instead of more..you know...gaming functionality added because the people that tend to wander the internet, reading news articles and posting on blogs or forums about things like this, are a very niche group that care about these things. I cant wait until these are finished just so we can actually focus on things to make it better as a game console. Hrmm...my post seems kind bitter, lol.
MP3 support would be nice, I never got into the whole 3D at home thing (even though I own a 3DS) so this isn't interesting to me but at least they are bringing the feature over.
It's nice to see the PS4 slowly catching up to the PS3 but I'll still keep my PS3 hooked up for blurays and music.
happy now. now i want a good Sony remote for the PS4.
I HATE to complain but I wont be happy until I can download my own personal music onto my PS4.. I just realized yesterday that I cant even LISTEN to my music on Soundcloud. Its irritating that I feel so limited on what I can do on PS4 (I've had my PS4 for a month now) & I didn't feel that way at all on PS3 which sucks because I got hit with the YLOD on my PS3..... I miss that sumbitch. But yeah these updates need to be more advanced because Im not feelin good spending all that money on something thinking it was going to KILL the PS3.
