@KratosMD Sonic hard? Save points in levels? What is this crazy talk.

Hahaha, I'm a Sonic master having beat Sonic 2 with all the chaos emeralds on the mega drive. I know the stages off the top of my head and know 95% of the secrets. It's obviously easy for me, but that's the dedication of an 11-12 year old. I think I actually know a glitch / cool thing from Sonic 1 that I haven't seen done before or since so I might make a YouTube video if it. If only I could master YouTube.

@BAMozzy As noisy said and as I believe you are suggesting in your comment, you can't really compare the score of the The Witcher along side something like Sonic Mania. Good luck to anybody basing their choice of game on the numeric score at the end of a review alone.

However, I genuinely don't see these kind of games as just a simple distraction to tide me over until something with prettier graphics comes along. To me the likes of Sonic, Fez, Braid, Axiom Verge, Cosmic Star Heroine (currently loving this) and more all stand absolutely toe to toe with my favourite bigger budget games of the generation. There is a ton of joy for me in watching a well animated sprite dance after a battle, or listening to an awesome soundtrack that you know a single guy/girl has burnt the midnight oil perfecting, or trying to fill in the narrative gaps in a purposefully obtuse story. I can relate to the different facets of these sort of games on a different, deeper level. The enjoyment is no more driven by nostalgia than anything else I do in my life.. I mean, I like ice cream, I have done since I was a kid. I suppose you could argue there is an element of nostalgia in that relationship too but it's not the reason I keep eating it - ultimately I just love ice cream!!!

@kyleforrester87 Yet again missing the point!!! Its not that these games are to 'tide' people over until something more visually impressive comes along at all. They are games to shut off from the world, have some mindless and relatively simplistic entertainment with that instant gratification that can come from these short levels. Reaching the end in a minute or two - instant gratification!

Those more visually impressive games though tend to have a LOT more depth, not just in game-play but in characters, lore, the world, the story etc. Games like Sonic are simplistic - virtually mindless fun as a way to switch off from the world rather jump into a world full of story and characters with dynamic relationships. The visuals help bring those worlds to life, give emotion to the characters - not just from facial animations but in the dialogue and its delivery.

I really don't know why you keep insisting its down to purely visual but its the depth of the story - something these games don't have, the chance to spend time in anothers 'shoes' so to speak in worlds I will never get to inhabit in real life. The visuals are the 'icing' on the cake, the bit that helps enhance everything. Whether its having my breath taken away by a beautiful sunset in the glorious world of Horizon or brutal but stunning world of the Witcher 3. Spending time with characters like Nate, Aloy, Geralt and experiencing their worlds, their relationships and overcoming their problems together. These games have the power to take me on a journey, not just a 'pathway' through a game but an emotional rollercoaster - to feel the 'highs' of success and share their pain too.

Games like Sonic are the literary equivalent of a newspaper comic strip - not saying these can't be entertaining and fun but I would rather read a Stephen King book than read 'Garfield' and there are no pretty pictures in a Stephen Kings book!

You seem to be getting a bit wound up by my opinion or maybe it's just the way I'm reading it so we'll agree to disagree and agree as I think we understand one another upto a point.

@kyleforrester87 I am not getting wound up, its just that every time, you basically insinuate that I am only interested in games if they look 'good' and not like they were created 20+yrs ago. There is so much more to these AAA games that's just visual but I will admit, seeing something like a sunset over a a beautiful 3D vista, the way the light bounces of the water and passes through the trees, the way the colour tints the world etc is much more impacting and emotional than seeing a pixelated blob on screen trying to represent the same.

I have never denied that games like Sonic have their place. Not everyone is looking to get bogged down in a 'fantasy' world but looking to have just fun, that simplistic arcade style fun. A way to switch off from the world and have relatively instant gratification and success. Not wanting to get bogged down with conversation or put up with cut-scenes, not wanting to be involved in 'real world' dilemmas - real in the sense of the 'humanistic' nature and in the context of these games that mirrored life. Obviously we don't have to worry about the threat of Alien, Orc, Zombie etc attack in real life but often we play as human characters dealing with these threats and the impact that has on those lives. Sometimes people just want to jump straight into a game and play. I know some AAA games offer a similar effect - racing and sports (like Fifa) games for example can offer similar - although these can offer more depth if you want to go into the sim side, managing the teams, setting up the car a specific way. Given the choice I would rather play Sonic than Fifa or most sim racing games myself.

@themcnoisy The point I was making is that you can't compare a Sonic game to the Witcher 3 and in the same way you can't compare a film to something like Family Fortunes. The reason I commented was more to do with fact that people seem to be assuming that the review score will be based on a uniform score system where a game like the Witcher that has a '9' and therefore this Sonic will get 7's. Its possible that this could well be the best Sonic game ever and therefore get 9's and 10's but that 95%+ on metacritic doesn't mean its the 'best' game ever and better than games like Witcher 3, Uncharted 4 or Horizon:ZD, just that its the best Sonic 2D game ever. It annoys me that people think a game must be better than another completely different genre and class of game than another because it has a higher review score - regardless of whether its a indie vs AAA, 2D platformer vs 3D open world RPG, 8/16bit vs ultra realistic visuals etc. People need to be more objective rather than look at review scores as a 'universal' marker. If this game scores 6's and 7's, it just means that its an 'average' 2D sonic game not that its on par with Mass Effect: Andromeda. Scoring 9's and 10's doesn't mean its on par with the likes of Zelda or the other big AAA games I mentioned - just means its the best in its genre and if you like this genre, its worth buying.

@BAMozzy I disagree, tbh even games like Final Fantasy VI and VII have more depth than most modern games. It feels like games are slowly getting watered-down so everybody and their cats & dogs can beat every game and see everything in it. Just look at Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, you can literally let it play itself.

Edit: You're basically comparing apples and oranges. 2D Platformers still exist in modern form, you just don't like the genre, that doesn't mean everyone shares your opinion. Modern games don't have more depth, if anything they have less comparatively speaking than their SNES - PS2 counterparts in the same genres.

@Reanfan7 Games like FF are still around today and still offer the same depth. Games like the Witcher, Fallout series, Elder Scrolls etc all are the modern day equivalents and all have a lot of depth. Final Fantasy is still going strong and evolved with the technology.

I am certainly not comparing Apples and Oranges. Its not about whether I like the genre or not either. I am merely saying that IF this game scores a 9/10 it doesn't make it as good as Zelda, Better than games like Fallout etc because it scores more - it just means its one of the better 2D Platformers.

Modern day games have a lot more depth in general - even like for like in genres - like Racing games for example. They are far less arcade style with a lot more sim based where you can go into detail, set up the suspension, tyre pressures, adjust the spoilers for downforce etc - all of which adds more depth.I could go on and on but games like Crash, Spyro, etc didn't have depth. Games like Super Mario Bros, Street Fighter, Mario Kart 2 etc don't have depth It doesn't make them 'bad' and can still be fun!!

@Reanfan7 Yeah I have to agree with @BAMozzy in that games nowadays have more depth then in the 16 bit - PS2 eras bt that's mainly cause of advancement in technology more then anything. As @BAMozzy said a good example.is sports games. Where as sports games felt more arcadey then realistic during those times but again due to the technology. RPGS had much more grinding to the to make the games seem longer. And open world sandbox games have come a long way. Take for example Zelda Breath of the Wild compared to Ocarina of Time or even older GTA games to newer.

If anything honestly I am not big on games with so much depth, I like to be able to pick up a game and start playing it. I don't want to go through a half hour of tutorials, or have to figure out wind direction and strength just to throw a ball down the field, but that's just me.

To say that games today don't have depth, is just not true and anyone can see that.

@Sonic1994 I think there's a thread discussing E3 2017 generally, but in terms of Sonic Mania, I imagine they'll announce a release date at some point during the show, and maybe even reveal a new zone Only a few weeks to go!
