Topic: Best Way to Fix the HDR passthrough issue?

Based on what I've read, it looks like you can't use the HDR settings from the PS4 Pro as long as the PS4 pro is hooked up to the PSVR processing unit.

Does anyone know what the best way around this is, other than repeatedly unplugging and replugging the HDMI cables (which over time will damage the HDMI jacks)? I found a couple of examples online, but they were all half a year old. Trying to see whether there's something better out there now...

I'm one of the people that this affects. To be honest, at the moment I am not willing to spend another £30 at the moment on a solution. I am guessing this is a hardware issue because there is still no patch from Sony.

I tend to route through the PSVR box and not have HDR unless I am playing an HDR capable game (for example, Horizon) when I switch cables. Not perfect. At some point I may buy a splitterl

Now I may be an idiot, but there's one thing I am not sir, and that sir, is an idiot

I did see this--problem is I don't have any spare hdmi ports for the second link that you need for that solution. I just bought a 4-port HDMI switch a couple of months ago for my non-4k consoles. Guess im looking for a 5-port one now to free up some tv space.

Thanks though! This may end up being my only/best option.

The issue is most likely caused by the HDMI controller inside the PSVR box. If this is not capable of being upgraded to support HDR - most likely HDMI 2.0a (or 'b' for that matter) on both the input and output, then HDR pass through will be impossible. HDMI 2.0a was the revision that added HDR and 'b' is the revision added for HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma - basically HDR for broadcasters like BBC) not necessary for PS4/VR but would still allow HDR passthrough as its the most up to date revision.

If you are looking for some HDMI splitter solution, it is important to ensure that it has at least one HDMI 2.0a HDCP 2.2 input and at least 1 of these as an output to get HDR to pass through to a 4k HDR TV. Its obviously not required for the output to the VR box but I would expect a 'splitter' to have equal output ports. The principal is the same for anyone that runs their console through an external Amp (for surround sound) before sending that image to a TV. Another solution could be to use an Amp as the splitter as some have two output HDMI's - although this is far more costly but if you already have an Amp that could do the job, this may be an option. Amps like this are generally used in AV set-ups that may have a TV and Projector for example so its not uncommon to have two HDMI outputs - maybe more so with 4k HDR.

However if you were looking at upgrading your home audio or already own an Amp that is suitable, this could also provide a workaround solution. It would definitely be the more expensive route and take up two HDMI inputs on your TV too.

A pessimist is just an optimist with experience!

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

Feel free to add me but please send a message so I know where you know me from...

Yeah, we have a Samsung too, although only one of the HDMI ports appears to be usable with HDR settings. I would only need one HDR port for this anyway though it seems, as the PSVR can't use HDR itself so the cable leading from it should be fine in another port.

Sigh guess it's time to buy another hdmi switch and more premium HDMI cables. The expense of this hobby was one of the reasons I became a lawyer I suppose.

@MadAussieBloke I can only import from the US but I am tempted because I haven't bothered with a splitter because of the extra power cable.

The one glitch with my current setup is that the PS4 goes dark for 1-2 secs whenever I start a new game. Didn't bother me too much until I started Bloodborne. That means insta death.

Sony need to release a new pass through box. All these options take what is just about manageable, to over the top (cable wise).
