The Elder Scrolls 6 Development

Can you remember when The Elder Scrolls 6 was announced? Do you remember what year that was? We'll give you a second to guess.

The game was announced during Bethesda's E3 2018 showcase with a very brief CG teaser. Yep, that was over seven years ago, and we've seen nothing of the project since.

At the time, we wrote that it would almost certainly be a PS5 title. Now, we'd be shocked if it isn't on PS6 at launch.

To be fair, Bethesda outright admitted that the announcement only happened because it wanted to be transparent (and put an end to all of the rumours). The developer never made any promises about release windows and the like.

But how are things actually going behind the scenes? Well, the company's handed us a rare update on The Elder Scrolls 6 via Game Informer, and while it sounds like we're still some ways off seeing the bloody thing, Bethesda assures that it's got everything under control.

"It’s progressing really well," says studio boss Todd Howard.

"The majority of the studio’s on VI, but I’ll say this: We always overlap. So, we’re very used to overlapping development. And we have long pre-productions on things so that we feel good about them. And it’s a process," he continues.

Howard then acknowledges the the general slowness of the whole thing: "We all wish it went a little bit faster – or a lot faster – but it’s a process that we want to get right.”

Up until now, the company's development schedule has been a little murky. Starfield obviously came out a couple of years back, and there have been whispers of a new Fallout title — but according to the management, the developer's pretty much all-in on the Skyrim successor at this point.

"As the internet likes to tell us, it’s been a while," jokes studio director Angela Browder, but she's quick to stress how exciting things are behind closed doors.

"The industry and the hardware and all of this have made such huge leaps and bounds since the last time we made one of these [...] I will be honest, for me, sometimes I see things that are happening, and I go, ‘Angela from Skyrim days could never have envisioned seeing this like this now'."

So there you have it, The Elder Scrolls 6 is, apparently, doing great. As always, it's just a question of when we'll get a glimpse of the game in action.

Previously, Howard had said that he — and by extension, the company — enjoys shadow dropping games, which leads us to believe that when we do eventually see The Elder Scrolls 6, its full release won't be far behind.
