God Of War Collection poses one very simple question: yo, do you like God Of War?

As far as we’re concerned, there are three types of people in this world: those that have, those that haven’t, and those that won’t. We refer to Sony Santa Monica’s excellent Greek mythology action-adventure series God Of War of course. The truth is this: if you’ve played a God Of War game, you’ll probably happily play one again; if you haven’t played a God Of War game, you probably should play one; and if you’re aware of God Of War but just have no interest in it whatsoever, then maybe, just maybe you should skip this.

Either way, the God Of War Collection is a loving repackaging of two of the best Playstation 2 games ever made. Remastered with a rock-solid 60FPS frame-rate, and the reduction of tearing, in many places these 3-5 year old games look next-gen. The lighting is perhaps the game’s weakest part, but with some great animation, high-res textures, and just a clean look and feel, it’s hard to argue that backwards compatibility may well lie with a new Sony franchise, the “Collection”.

Apparently God Of War Collection took just 15 weeks to build, which is a really short turn-around for the improvements made here. The only real disappointment is that the in-engine cut-scenes (which were originally pressed from the game’s PS2 engine) have not been reworked for this release, often meaning the gameplay is a clear step ahead in visual clarity than the cut-scenes.

Having said that, the main reason you’re likely to play God Of War in the first place is for the solid puzzling, excellent combat and great story-telling and pacing — all of which is in place in the Collection.

The addition of trophies is just a sweetener. At the end of the day, if you’re looking to get yourself excited for God Of War III, this is the perfect time to drop-in with Kratos’ earlier adventures. Whether it’s for the first time, or tenth time.
