It's certainly graphically impressive. I'm not sure what it was about the gameplay trailer, but it didn't look particularly engaging. It could just be that the player never got hit or it could be because I couldn't really feel the impact of the attacks and something about the physics of jumping felt off. It's pretty hard to judge feel from a trailer though, so I'll hope it'll feel better when I give it a go. That'll depend on the voice being improved / mutable / available in other languages.

I can't wait. I think “a little less punishing” sounds great. It took me about 9 hours to complete the first biome in Returnal and I was definitely getting close to giving up at that point. I ended up needing lots of tips (leave most of the chests until you've cleared everything except the boss; abuse doors by backing out of rooms to avoid being overwhelmed; melee as much as possible once you can; silphium is resin at full health; accept that some runs are just going to be tough (a Titanops, two Mycomorph, and a Proteron with the starting pistol is going to suck)) and it'd have been nice to have progressed more without them. Once I got past the first biome, I knew I could manage the rest of the game (although my first encounter with a Severed made me wonder). I now have and I'm having a blast messing with high level weapons without the stress of losing progress (plus the permanent unlocks make earlier biomes easier by giving access to more resources).

I bought a PS5 during Black Friday and Returnal's been my first full-sized game after Astro's Playroom. It's phenomenal. It took me nine hours to beat Phrike and another eight to beat Ixion, so I'm not great, but I'm loving it despite the difficulty and hope I can make it through to the end. it feels so good to play; the style, atmosphere, and music are excellent; and the story so far is intriguing. I'm looking forward to seeing what Housemarque has been up to.

MadWorld's the only Platinum game I've played and whilst very stylish it was lacking otherwise. Since that predates Tinari, I have no expectations, but if it suggests an action rather than shooting game I'm excited since I tend to prefer them.

Edit: Oh wait, they also did Nier: Automata, which was great.

I bought my PS4 slim with three pack-in games (The Last of Us, Uncharted 4, and... DriveClub) for £280 in 2016. That's £370 today. If an equivalent PS5 bundle existed, it'd be over £500. The PS5 is absolutely worse value than the PS4 was.

The lack of exclusives highlights the relative lack of value. When there are a lot of games, I can amortise the cost of the console over more things and its value increases.

Can I afford a PS5? Sure. Do I think its value matches its price? Absolutely not.

I'm hoping the PS5 Pro will push the Slim closer to the equivalent of that PS4.

I still have a decent backlog of Switch and PS4 games, so I'll continue to hold off on buying a PS5 until Black Friday next year. Then again, if a Super Switch is released that'll take priority and a a PS5 will become a late 2025 purchase.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 474

I finished Yakuza 0 last weekend and immediately bought Yakuza Kiwami on sale despite promising myself not to buy any new games until my backlog is empty. It's worse than 0 in every way and a pity the world isn't much changed, but I'm still having fun. I'll be playing nothing but Zelda in a few weeks, but might have time to play Life is Strange between Kiwami and that.

I'm glad Push Square has decided to address politics briefly (!) in their review. Not talking about politics is a political decision to accept the status quo; for an oppressed community that means continued oppression. Push Square isn't the publisher or retailer and are thus free to discuss these things without it affecting their bottom line.

Things aren't made in a vacuum and the increased prominence given to the creator of the IP means increased trauma for those affected by it. Suggesting that trans women pose a risk to the safety of biological women is perpetuating a dangerous stereotype (as some comments here are doing). It'd be nice if people would at least recognise that.
