Re: Assassin's Creed Origins Edits Classroom Scenario for Inclusivity

@Donald_M

"But presenting a bunch of black Viking dummies in a museum so black people won't be offended by the lack of black Vikings in ancient scandanavia obviously does not and also is not something that would ever happen"

...but it did happen, in Sweden. Hence why I used that specific example. You see, I choose what I say very carefully.

Re: Assassin's Creed Origins Edits Classroom Scenario for Inclusivity

mantralux

@Kidfried Yeah that's all good, my point though is that if you market something as educational, your responsibilities are now infinitely higher than when making art (games, movies, whatever). I don't care if your fictional WWII game is all-female, but I do care if your high school textbook claims that the battlefields during WWII were all-female.

It's the "educational" claim I have a problem with.

Re: Assassin's Creed Origins Edits Classroom Scenario for Inclusivity

mantralux

@Donald_M

"More like minutes. I've also been doing work stuff as needed and watching stuff on Netflix, but if it makes you happy to imagine I've spent the last five hours doing nothing but staring at Push Square on my screen, knock yourself out."

I didn't say that, but if it makes you happy to imagine that's what I meant, knock yourself out.

"If they showed, say, Braveheart in a classroom with a commentary track pointing out the historical inaccuracies and had a reading afterwards about the actual history, would you have a problem with that?"

Braveheart doesn't position itself as educational. AC does: "Designed as an educational tool intended for use in schools and universities". So your comparison is flawed and my example with the museum is 100% accurate. Feel free to answer my question regarding that instead of filibustering.

Re: Assassin's Creed Origins Edits Classroom Scenario for Inclusivity

mantralux

@Donald_M I don't know why you find this so hard to wrap your mind around, you've been arguing for hours in here.

If you visit a museum with an exhibit of Norwegian vikings, and half the vikings are black because the museum felt it "was not necessary to prioritise historical racism over inclusive museum-visits", would you not think that's a bit disingenuous?

The mere insinuation that black people won't be able to handle that museum visit without being offended over the fact that all vikings are white, is racist.

It's pretty clear to me that such a political standpoint is designed not for people to feel included, but actually designed for the museum to win social justice points.

Re: Assassin's Creed Origins Edits Classroom Scenario for Inclusivity

mantralux

@carlos82

"Had they just shown all boys many may not have even realised girls weren't there"

Well...exactly? By changing it and making a political standpoint about it, they perpetuate sexism. No girl would have even noticed "lack of representation" in a video game, so why re-write history just to be able to sit on some high horse of social justice?

Re: Assassin's Creed Origins Edits Classroom Scenario for Inclusivity

mantralux

It's equally as ridiculous as a WWII game where Hitler is a woman because the game devs wanted to "represent genders in a more balanced way", arguing that history unfairly portrays men as warmongerers.

The argument that girls can't see a classroom full of boys in a videogame set in ancient Egypt without feeling excluded is about as sexist as it gets.

Re: Review: The Sims 4 (PS4)

mantralux

My favourite part about The Sims is that it's pretty easy turning it into a very different game than originally intended:

I made a serial killer character once, luring strangers to my home and then removing doors in the room they were in (through the editor) so they would starve to death.

I also made a painter character once with the goal of having a studio in my backyard, selling paintings as my only income, was pretty cool.

The sandbox nature of the game makes it easy to invent new gameplay modes.

Re: FIFA 18 PS4 Patch 1.03 Out Now, Buffs Keepers, Reduces Shot Accuracy

mantralux

Still needs a difficulty level above Legendary in career mode. I shouldn't be able to take a team like Willem II to the Champions League final as easily as I can on Legendary.

Oh, and difficulty levels are beyond a joke. All they do is decrease realism. Legendary means the opponent can now read my mind, predict my movement quicker than the player performing the movement, and 6'4" CBs will always outpace my 5'7" striker regardless of pace/acceleration stats.

Re: Interview: Slightly Mad Discusses Project CARS 2's Early Reception

mantralux

I'm not getting tricked by Project Cars again. Bought the first one on digital download and it was the worst racing game I've ever played. Graphics were laughably bad, and gameplay was even worse. It was like they made a good racing game and then decided to reduce graphics quality and suck all the fun out of it before launch. PC2 at least looks better but there are plenty of titles in the same category that are bound to be better.

Re: Gamescom 2017: A New Pro PS4 Controller Has Been Announced

mantralux

@leucocyte Does the SCUF Impact have the same buttons as the vanilla DS4? It looks like their controllers are just modified DS4s (trackpad seems to be the same, status light on the front seems to be the same), and for £180 I would expect extremely tactile buttons in all positions. Or is the £180 only really paying for the paddles and a slightly nicer design?

Re: No Man's Sky Patch 1.3 Discovers New Story Content and Fast Travel Portals

mantralux

I actually enjoyed NMS a lot, even at vanilla stage. I didn't get it for multiplayer or any of the other features people thought it would have...I got it for the exploration aspect, the notion of happening upon something no one else - including the developers - have never seen.

The game has given me more than a handful of wow-moments. For example: being trapped in a desert surrounded by predators at night miles away from my ship was quite an experience.

I'd love to see the game evolve in the survival/disaster direction more than the Elite Dangerous/Star Citizen direction though. Possibility of something going wrong on your ship so you have to crash land on a planet and then find parts and materials to fix it, etc.

Re: Street Fighter V Costume Deemed Unfit for TV, ESPN Tells Evo Finalist to Change It

mantralux

@JohnnyBastos

By that logic, evidence exists for the earth being flat. It's just not compelling enough.

Just because I submit a paper with very loose subjective definitions and very small sample sizes doesn't actually mean that evidence now exists and people can start referencing it as basis for argument.

Definition for what counts as evidence has been given numerous times in this thread: scientifically proven. That is the standard I have given, hence why I keep asking for scientifically proven methods of measuring objectification towards women, and not just opinions on the matter.

Or we could just agree to what I think we both know: it's impossible to measure objectification since it's a highly abstract term that even lacks an anchor in a positive/negative spectrum. Even if objectification exists, there is nothing that says it's inherently negative.

One of the definitions in the papers you linked to was "looking at a woman's body before looking at her face", as if the face is less part of her physique than her arms, neck or legs. But why would it be inherently negative to look at a woman's arms before looking at her face, and why would that automatically mean you "degrade someone to the status of a mere object" (the definition of objectification).

Re: Street Fighter V Costume Deemed Unfit for TV, ESPN Tells Evo Finalist to Change It

mantralux

@JohnnyBastos

How am I moving away? I not only read the links you provided, I also gave you reasons as to why they weren't what I asked for.

Burden of proof is raised because you and others are claiming that objectification is measurable - a silly claim at best. And so I have asked for evidence of this claim, of which none has actually been offered. All you did was google "how to measure objectification" and posting the first four links that came up without reading it yourself.

I'm still interested in getting scientific evidence on how to measure objectification, and subsequently how to apply that measurement to draw a conclusion that showing buttocks in Street Fighter V increases objectification towards women in society.

Re: Street Fighter V Costume Deemed Unfit for TV, ESPN Tells Evo Finalist to Change It

mantralux

@JohnnyBastos

You haven't sufficiently backed up your point at all, but I do understand you wanting to back out now seeing as how you won't be able to answer the question.

As for your papers, seeing as how I asked for them I actually had a little read through and they weren't what I asked for.

The first one is an honors project from Illinois Wesleyan University written by a student who thinks looking at a woman's body before looking at her face is sexism. Not very scientific.

The second one has a sample size of 78, which, if you'd know anything about statistics, is a ridiculously low sample size for any measure. The margin of error is basically 100% at sample sizes below a couple of hundred. But even then they struggle to define their own definition of objectification.

The third one is another student at Illinois Wesleyan University deciding "retest validity" of the previous paper which was pure to begin with. His sample size was 60.

The fourth is just the same as the others, albeit with a larger sample size of 675. This one is mildly interesting because the conclusion is that women objectify themselves and other women more than men objectify women, and then there are about 20 different hypothesis at the end about what this data means.

However: none of these papers measure objectivity (which is what I asked for). They are mostly college papers with very low sample sizes and extremely vague and differing definitions of what constitutes "objectification". To define objectification they must draw a number of subjective conclusions as variables in the equation.

You would know this if you had actually read the links you submitted.

@JoeBlogs

"Why then do you simplify my position as me thinking that 'buttocks in video games turns gamers into misogynists'?"

Because that is what the article is about. You now seem to have changed your mind to instead share my opinion which is that it's impossible to measure so any conclusions on the subject are guesswork at best. I welcome your change in position on the matter.

All I have said from the start is that there is no scientific basis for your claims. You are welcome to an opinion, as long as you don't portray that opinion as having any sort of validity, because it doesn't.

"nobody really believes that it is only a few games that will turn a normal person with respect for women into a misogynist"

Someone from ESPN does, apparently.

Re: Street Fighter V Costume Deemed Unfit for TV, ESPN Tells Evo Finalist to Change It

mantralux

@JohnnyBastos

I'm not going to read through papers from sources that are unknown to me just to find out the answer to my question, why don't you just answer it instead of giving me homework? Since you have read all of those links you should be able to answer it, right?

The question is: how do you measure objectification?

Posting a bunch of links isn't actually an answer.

" Doesn't counter my point though as I mean women plural"

Well you said "ask women what they think", and here you have an answer from a woman...but you disregard that by essentially saying "no no I mean more than just you". Did you mean to say "ask women who share my opinion on the matter what they think"?

Re: Street Fighter V Costume Deemed Unfit for TV, ESPN Tells Evo Finalist to Change It

mantralux

@JoeBlogs

"Clearly, the feeling is that this type of thing either influences or reinforces our attitudes"

Key word: feeling. It has no basis in facts or reality. People think it could influence people but there is no evidence to say it does. We've had this argument with all media throughout history. In the 1800s people thought reading certain books would lead to the demise of society. People thought listening to Ozzy Osbourne turned you into a devil worshipper. People thought playing Call Of Duty made you violent. And here we are in 2017 and people like you think buttocks in video games turns gamers into misogynists.

Re: Street Fighter V Costume Deemed Unfit for TV, ESPN Tells Evo Finalist to Change It

mantralux

@JoeBlogs

"If we follow this to its logical conclusion, then all of psychology is pointless"

If you argue that objectification is measurable then please tell me how you think that would work. The debate is ridiculous. What if I suddenly claim that eating porridge changes the way people feel negatively about curly hair. I can't provide any evidence to back up my claim, and there is no way we can measure "anti-curly hair" feelings...but I'm just gonna continue arguing because who is going to prove me wrong?

The burden of evidence is on the person claiming something is true. You are claiming that showing buttocks in Street Fighter V increases objectification of women. I say: prove it? Not an unreasonable request.

"No doubt hours of exposure to He-Man, Batman, Spider-Man, Indiana Jones, Action Force, TMNT, Thundercats etc. as a child had some kind of impact on my view of what a boy/man is"

Except that isn't what I asked. I asked:

"do you degrade all men to mere grunts"

Your own theory is that skimpy bikinis on polygons made to look like female humans turns people into misogynists. Following that logic, skimpy clothing on polygons made to look like male humans will turn people into misandrists. Right?

Re: Street Fighter V Costume Deemed Unfit for TV, ESPN Tells Evo Finalist to Change It

mantralux

@JoeBlogs

"However, I would argue that what we watch/play must have an effect on us. If it didn't, then why bother?"

All I said was that your argument isn't supported by any scientific facts, so the discussion is pointless: we can't measure your claims, so they will forever remain unproven.

I personally don't believe watching a slasher film turns you into a murderer. I also don't believe watching porn makes you a rapist. So logically I don't believe skimpy outfits in Street Fighter V makes you a misogynist.

"can you really be so sure that seeing hundreds and hundreds of ads, films, games etc. has no effect on our long-term attitudes/behaviour?"

Let me ask you this: do you objectify men because of all the action movies coming out of Hollywood in the last 50 years? They all have superhuman strengths, bare torsos with impossible physiques and are able to withstand insane amounts of pain and damage. In other words, do you degrade all men to mere grunts?

Re: Street Fighter V Costume Deemed Unfit for TV, ESPN Tells Evo Finalist to Change It

@Nygiantz17

"How do you measure love?"

You don't, which is my point. No one can claim that positive video games creates more love in the world, nor can they claim negative video games can create more hatred.

"A concept's ability to be measured does not affect its existence."

No but it effects its ability to be used in a scientific study. You're welcome to explain to me how you should measure objectification as a direct result of a video game.

"The internet contains vast amounts of knowledge. Sexualization of video game characters can have effects on real life."

There you go again. "Can have"...based on what?

Re: Guide: 16 Best PS4 Accessories You Need to Own in 2017

mantralux

Warning: I bought a Razer Raiju (actually because of the review here on PS) and after a short adjustment period I was very happy with it. Bought it mostly to play FIFA 17.

However...after a few weeks I was noticing how my performances in FIFA 17 had dropped drastically. At first I thought it was just me not yet used to the controller...but then I noticed something: my players weren't sprinting 100%.

Turns out the R2 button doesn't seem to go 100% when pressed. This is the button you hold down when sprinting, and somehow my players weren't fully sprinting.

Another warning: I accidentally stepped on the USB cable and it very easily snapped at the controller end...but the normal DS4 USB cable doesn't fit the Raiju. In fact it seems they have intentionally designed the USB cable so that only a Razer Raiju cable can be used. And I assume that is a very expensive cable.

In short: stay away from the Razer Raiju.

Re: Hello Games Breaks No Man's Sky Silence with Foundation Update

mantralux

@NoxAeturnus The biggest problem with No Man's Sky for me is that it makes everyone into generalists and no one into a specialist, because of how the mechanics for each lack variety. All NMS players are miners, bounty hunters, traders and explorers, because learning to master either of these skills takes around five minutes.

There should have been multiple paths you can go down that would reward you differently. 100+ slot ships for miners, special nimble fighters for bounty hunters, allowing players to have multiple ships and giving traders more garage space, base building mechanics specifically for explorers to set up outposts, special companions for those seeking the atlas...and so on.

If you could become a specialist, the game would have variety and replayability.

Re: Hello Games Breaks No Man's Sky Silence with Foundation Update

mantralux

It's a strange one for me. I don't think the current game is that far off from the E3 trailer to make it intentionally disingenuous. Most of the features in that trailer are in the game currently, some aren't. I put around 50 hours into the game, and it does become repetitive after a while when there is no overarching goal other than reaching the center.

For example, there should be sub-goals for every type of play. Want to mine stuff? Then there should be some form of mining path that rewards you with hauler ships, specific mining tools, etc. Want to defeat space pirates? Should be a bounty hunter path rewarding you with nimble fighters, better ship guns, etc.

Re: PS4 Firmware Update 4.06 Improves the Quality of Your Console

mantralux

@BAMozzy I understand what you're saying (and would also like to get my £350 value in "unlocking" power for all games) but keep in mind that the vast majority of people on this planet, and therefore in extension PS4 Pro owners, are dumber than snails, so there is no way Sony would allow a setting in their hardware that could potentially break games. It would just result in 100x more support tickets for Sony having to deal with "my game doesn't work anymore" - "go into settings->performance and turn off PS4+" - "ah ok it works now thanks".

Re: PS4 Firmware Update 4.06 Improves the Quality of Your Console

mantralux

@nathanSF As far as I can tell, the PS4 Pro automatically clocks down to PS4 levels to avoid breaking games. I'm not an expert at game development, but I assume many games have been performance tweaked exactly to the PS4 specs, and I also assume that some things in games are actually paced by the CPU/GPU clock speed...so if unleashed on a PS4 Pro without a patch, weird things could start happening.

That is the only logical conclusion I can make for not just opening up the firepower automatically across all games, patched or not.

"The humour is very controversial throughout the game, and although it may seem silly and harmless, it is rather insensitive and offensive"

Come on Push Square, let's not go down the PC route. You're so good at avoiding stuff like that, which is a huge reason as to why I prefer you over your competition.

Re: Video: Should You Buy Mafia III for Your PS4?

mantralux

Interesting that most seem to think I meant I was triggered, when in fact it is the opposite. The reason that disclaimer puts me off is because Hangar 13 proves before the game even starts that they are tainted by the current PC climate, and therefore I can't trust that they have made great decisions in the game. Since I am not sure if this game is a game of love or a game of propaganda, it has turned me right off and I won't be playing it. I don't need a disclaimer telling me racism is bad, I already know it is. But since Hangar 13 assumes I'm stupid enough to not know that, I am not interested in their game.
