As an avid ff fan since ff6, i usually have my gripes about the game but I buy it anyway. I did it with 12, I did it with 13, 15, 16 etc... And... i did it with remake. Like most ff fans I was so hyped for a remake of one of the best ff games ever, and I was left extremely disappointed. However, this time i decided I would vote with my wallet. So I didn't buy rebirth. And I refuse to buy the next one.
I may be in the minority (although I don't think that is true), but I'm done supporting a company that refuses to listen to its player base. They promised us a remake and we got this crap instead. For this reason, I think the sales are down; it sold less than ff16. And that game was extremely controversial.
sometimes the answer isn't analytical; sometimes its not because of the install base, or the game being part 2 etc... Yall have every excuse under the sun. Sometimes, its the most simple reason. Until Squeenix begins to listen to the fan base, I will no longer buy ANY FF game moving forward.
@OneWingedAngel Absolutely spot on. Thats the category I'm in. I bought a ps5 for remake on its release, played it and it turned me off the entire trilogy. Id rather play the OG ff7 than the time travel dimension crap in it now.
Its not a sequel. its not a new story, its the same story retold; padded out to three parts of one game. It is fair to assume some people are waiting until all 3 come out. While its also true that some people are buying them as they come out.
This is SE cash cow installment of the entire FF franchise. This is the game that is very much beloved worldwide of all the entries into the series. Most FF7 fans would get a PS5 console to play it. Not having access to a ps5 now is a choice rather than "I can't get one". And, most would own a remake by now. So that covers the fans of the game.
In the same token, many fans were outraged by the reimagining of remake, and decided to forget about continuing the trilogy. Whats most concerning here is not that it didn't reach remake numbers (although that was during the pandemic, its still physically bought copies and not digital) but that it didn't even match ff16.
Therefore, Its safe to assume that it has not done that well with existing fans, and newer fans alike thus far.
@TheCollector316 Apparently, that deal wasn't available in japan. It was an extra 5,000 yen for remake as well, which is almost the amount for remake : reddit user touhokujin
@DaniPooo But that was different, since it was a Final Fantasy game, typical of the franchise and genre, though it did change some things up, the main elements that a ff game has were retained. The over world, the battle theme and camera, the cut scenes, and the exploration of the open map the party system, the game was still heavily inspired by DnD, Final fantasy 7 defined the genre, it was something that broke the mold by setting the trend, not by copying what was already out there.
Regarding the quote of Yoshida in answering the question: what is Final fantasy.... It is obvious that as a game developer he is not going to reveal even what he thinks it is, as doing so would result in the fans expecting that blue print every single game. Therefore, bringing up this quote as a rebuttal to someone saying "this is not FF" does not really challenge the statement. By quoting this, it only shows that you do not have an opinion on what FF is, perhaps its because you don't have any real connection to the series? or maybe its because you haven't played much of the series? But everyone who has connected with the series knows the elements that have been retained in every numbered entry up until FF X. Thus, even if Yoshida refuses to acknowledge it publically, there very much is a blue print, filled with elements that enables the player to identify the game as one of the final fantasy series.
Final fantasy is a book, and each entry is a chapter in that book. With that said, this video i found can explain what i want to say better than i ever could, and i agree with this description 100% regarding the question: What is Final Fantasy. Therefore, i encourage those who are interested to watch this video.

This is what I said.

The game is not selling well so far and neither ff16. Square hasn't listened to fans in over 20 years.
