I loved Ghost of Tsushima but tbh I’m simply priced out of modern gaming. I can’t justify a $70 price for a new game when I still have so much on my backlog
Glad to see Shinobi make top 20. It looks incredibly fun and phenomenal, but I was worried it would get swept up—not only from big releases but also the 2 Ninja Gaiden games.
@RadioHedgeFund The entire point of trailers is for people to judge them. By your logic, people also shouldn’t be excited for games and praise elements of upcoming games because they haven’t played them. It’s fine to both be critical of things and be excited of things in development, if they didn’t want it to be judged then they wouldn’t have made a trailer in the first place.
Only 2 games that interested me fully. Even then, RE9 was so weird with how they did an announcement at the beginning for a Capcom sale & and announcement in the middle that RE9 was still in development. Even the big game announcement ate up so much time.
Something I dislike about Expedition 33 discussion is how some people are trying to turn it into an us vs them situation. People trying to use Ex33 to downplay the achievements of other turn based JRPGs and say it saved the genre, while in return some JRPG fans downplay the achievements of Ex33 and think of it as another western encroachment on the genre.
In reality this is very clearly a game made with a lot of reverence and respect for the JRPGs that came before it. It’s not trying to revolutionize the genre, it’s just people who have a ton of passion for the creatives of previous JRPGs and want to forge their own identity. It’s a labor of pure respect.
Josef literally cannot miss. The hate this game was getting before launch was absurd. Idk if it’s $70 or not but if it isn’t I might genuinely pick it up.
Gotta update my list: You can now get laid off -After you released a failed singleplayer game -After you released a successful singleplayer game -After you released a failed live service game -After you released a successful live service game -The day you release a game -Weeks before you launch your game
@Loamy I mean the last State of Play revealed Ghost of Yotei. This one had another first party reveal. I remember state of plays in 2019 with multiple first party announcements. State of Plays can definitely have interesting first party announcements.
Sony is just not bringing the heat. All the great announcements were from third parties. The only stuff Sony had were a meh PS+ lineup, another useless remaster, and a CG trailer of another Returnal style game (I really love Returnal but I don’t want 20% of the PS5’s exclusive first party library to just be games like Returnal)
Western companies love making money off of the deaths of people who suffer systematically, either by selling the bombs or selling the image of war. Military shooters have long been tools for the US military industrial complex, notably for the US army to recruit people and glorify their efforts. I mean this with no exaggeration, if this is true (which it’s looks to be) then it’s one of the most disgusting things EA has ever pulled. I wouldn’t be surprised if people said it wasn’t a big deal—this has become incredibly normalized in our society. But grow some amount of awareness and you’ll be able to understand how messed up this is.
Genuinely what is in the executive brain where you have this amazingly talented studio like Bluepoint and you send them off to make the 20th live service game in development in your gaming empire. How do you look at all the critically acclaim surrounding the new God of War and think that a live service game that would inherently remove a ton of the great parts about Ragnarok and 2018 would be a success. It’s such a waste, the entire PS5 generation has been a waste. All these amazingly talented studios have spent this generation working on a live service game and then pivoting from it. With development timelines growing absurdly large, it’s just embarrassing to see projects like this be in development.
I wish we saw more Animal Well love in art direction categories. Sure the pixel art isn’t BlazBlue level of detailed but it’s incredibly atmospheric and enchanting for such a small game. Still would probably give it to Metaphor tho.
As a Persona fan, that’s absolutely fair. It’s arguably the weakest of the 3 Atlus JRPGs released this year. It’s spectacular in a lot of regards, but it still has a good chunk of issues with pacing, dungeon design, and activities. The fact that the remake also didn’t truly unify all versions of P3 also stings a bit. Still a great thing but I think #10 of the year is absolutely fine.
Action is such a broad term. You have semi-souls likes with Stellar Blade and Wukong, an RPG with Dragon’s Dogma, and Gears style Hack n Slash. I think Hi-Fi Rush is my favorite PS5 Action release of the year and even then that’s a whole separate genre with character action.
Pseudo-currency where you buy fake currency with real money in only a few select options straight up needs to be outlawed. It only serves to confuse customers, obfuscate how much they’re spending, and could lead them to buying digital waste. For instance, I bought Terry in SF6 as my only DLC character. He cost 500 fight coins, but there’s no 500 fight coin option. I had to buy the 610 fight coin option, and now I have 110 fight coin sitting in my account that I’m just never gonna use for anything I care about. I feel like this leads to the backlash behind these prices actually being understated.
Any PC modders reading this, can you please make a mod where every door texture in the game is replaced with the awful door texture of Cloud’s door in FFVII Remake? Think of the comedy.
Wukong was not that good for the mass amount of outcry at it not winning GOTY. It’s like what happened with Spider-Man 2 last year, but this time with the devs seemingly fanning the flames. Wukong shows such an inability for the average gamer to expand their horizons. They assume any 3rd person action adventure game with high fidelity visuals are the peak of experience, no matter if there’s better stuff that year.
By far the best year of announcements for me, I think everyone will say that…
But I still think it’s super weird how little they did awards this year. Yeah the speakers got more time but it feels like there were less speakers this year. So many awards just flew by. Still would take this year over last year for any price. I wish they could find a better balance, but I’d rather take one half being amazing and the other being okay compared to one half being good and the other half being awful.
People comparing a free to play game with one of the largest media properties ever to a paid new IP to any extent beyond those actions are crazy. The value of Marvel Rivals comes from the brand and the fact it’s free. Those are like really the only two conclusions you could come from, maybe also artstyle considering how unappealing Concord’s style was. To act like Marvel’s Rivals success is such a big achievement is a bit of a stretch.
I’m one of the weirdos who actually watches them for the awards instead of the announcements. In terms of awards, my biggest hope is that they allow every winner to have a speech and have actual gaming industry people present awards instead of random Hollywood and music celebrities. Theres a 0% chance that actually happens so here are some other award hopes instead -I don’t want Erdtree to win anything. It would be so boring for it to win the exact same 4 awards the base game won -I don’t want Wukong to win GOTY and especially direction. It feels like the least inspired title out of all the nominees and represents TGA’s insistence on not straying away from blockbuster style titles -I want Balatro and Animal Well to both win something. Both of those games are great and individually deserve flowers, which is unlikely considering how many tech and genre categories these games can’t contend with -I don’t want Silent Hill 2 to win narrative. I would be happy with it winning any other award, but the narrative is mainly just the narrative of a 20 year old game.
Unrelated but y’all need to play UFO 50 if it ever gets on PlayStation. It is so creative, ambitious, fun and well made. The fact that Black Myth Wukong got a direction nomination over it is actually criminal.
It’s also a lot higher on the PS charts I’ve seen recently. The PS audience doesn’t seem to gravitate towards games like this so it was nice to see that regardless.
Everyone is always saying “indie teams will saving gaming!” but that glorifies the fact that indie teams are also struggling a lot financially, we just don’t hear about it. This is especially true in this post 2020 world where tons of gaming investments have slowed down.
I’ve been meaning to play TemTem for ages. It feels like something I would love, but from what I heard it is kind of very divisive. This gives me the perfect opportunity to jump in.
Important to note that the Golden Joysticks are all fan voted. Wukong is definitely the populist pick. This doesn’t really mean much in the scope of things considering how the fan votes are 10% of the TGA’s votes.
In an ideal world. I don’t think games like SH2 would be considered for something like narrative. But we don’t live in an ideal world so Persona 3 should’ve absolutely also been considered.
The fighting game category is actually insane. A F2P mess that launched in a worse state after already being taking down and winning the award originally & a collection of old arcade games over UNI 2 and Rivals 2 is insane
Everyone is acting like Grove Street went behind Rockstar’s back, made a ton of changes to the artstyle without their permission, then made the decision release the game unfinished. Grove Street were not the publisher. They would’ve needed approval for the artstyle change from Take Two, and it’s even possible they were forced to implement it. But Take Two and Rockstar also were 100% responsible for setting the November release, refusing refunds, and releasing the game buggy. They forced Grove Street to work hard in a crunched period of time, then kicked out their credit. That’s a dangerous precedent to the gaming industry and it’s wild people in these comments are defending it.
I think the best example of this is with their game announcements honestly. They’ve gone from announcing games like, 4 years out at some points and generally now the turnaround between reveal and release is a lot shorter. Concord came out a year after its teaser, Astro Bot a few months, Yotei seems to be a year after its teaser also. The only recent exception seems to be Marathon and Fairgame$ but those games seem to be in such fractured development with issues that recently popped up.
It sucks that the likely scenario from this is an acquisition from someone like NetEase or Tencent. However, leadership at Ubisoft has been so disgusting for ages now. We don’t live in a reality where just the top level is taken out, there’s always layoffs that affect lower levels. But something needs to change, and it needed to ages ago.
I’m so ready to skip the PS6 and get a PC next gen. This was announced literally less than a year from the original launch. If games are now taking 6-8 years to develop regardless, I can wait nowadays to play it on hardware that is a lot more flexible, doesn’t charge for online, and is more direct in what you can do with it. I still think consoles have a place, especially with physical media, but if Sony is also phasing that out like they seem to be with the Pro as well as just putting everything on PC, I don’t see why there’s any value in still being on this ship.
I know people will be like “Hah! That’ll show Square Enix” but this is a sequel to a story that has a lot of very passionate fans that hasn’t been properly followed up on in a while. I feel bad for the fans that could get blindsided by this.
