This article hits the nails on the head in the XSX marketing, MS shouted from the highest mountain about the graphical fidelity of the console. Everywhere you look they said it, and so did their influencers. They all claimed that 3rd party games would look and run best on the XSX. Sony and PS basically said nothing, they obvisouly decided to let their product do the talking when it came out. The only time they actually spoke of the hardware was in the Cerny interviews and even then that was just a GDC talk to inform developers of the capabilities of the machine. The people that should ACTUALLY care of the specs.
Then MS started catching their Ls and it started with the fact that they had no games to show at that event in May/June, then the announcement of the X1 support and culminating in the absolute fail that was the Halo reveal. The real kicker has now been the state of the launch games, with the PS5 pretty much equal in performance. The only thing that had going for them was being the most powerful console, but now that doesn't really seem to be the case since the console that it has compared itself to for the past year is basically at the same level.
For me, the worst part is the influencers, they have been so vocal at the "power delta" will mean that XSX is the best place to play, hyping up technologies that, according to insiders, is not as exciting as MS will have you believe AND living on any shred of the possibility that the PS5 is weaker (for ex. RDNA2 vs 1). BTW, PS5 influencers can be downright trash too.
@Tharsman Good points, I think I was just projecting my personal situation on the gaming community. I suppose at the end of the day, it all depends on what MS or Sony find more valuable and deem more important. MS clearly sees great value in it as they have pushed it for a while and looking at their current gen position (firmly last), they saw this as a great way to get some goodwill and points with consumers.
I believe that the PS5 will be BC enough with the PS4 to pass, all the big games will work and pretty well. We know that the PS3 is pretty much unlikely, but they will leverage the PS Now (or the next gen equivalent) for that along with the earlier consoles.
@EquiinoxGII I appreciate the tech and features, but I too don't understand why BC is such a big deal. Why would you buy a PS5/XSX to play 360 games. Granted I totally understand those that want to play games of previous generations that they have missed out on. (I am keen to play Halo in HDR)
I would love to see the Xbox current backwards compatibility stats. How much are people ACTUALLY using the feature
