Cyberpunk 2077 was quite rightly lambasted for the dire state it launched in almost six years ago, but what followed in the time since then has been nothing short of a staggering success.
CD Projekt Red turned the RPG and the conversation surrounding it around to make it a sales triumph, as the developer has now confirmed over 40 million copies of the game have been sold. The stat accounts for sales made up until today, 3rd July 2026, and includes base game purchases and the Ultimate Edition that packs in the Phantom Liberty DLC.
Confirming the news, the studio simply said: "Thank you all for helping us reach this amazing milestone!" The game is available on PS Plus Extra, but as the social media post specifically highlights "copies sold", it seems that subscription downloads aren't even included in the total count.
As a comparison point, The Witcher 3 has sold over 65 million units.
The game was updated with official PS5 Pro support more recently, and the Polish team has admitted it knows its next big project, The Witcher 4, cannot release in the same state as Cyberpunk 2077 at launch.
Speaking to the 2020 launch and what's happened since, CEO Michał Nowakowski said: "I'm not 100 per cent convinced we went through the full redemption arc [...] I'm convinced that we lost the faith of some people indefinitely, and that's a fair thing But I do hope we will be able to make it back – if not with The Witcher 4, then with whatever comes next."
The Witcher 4 is what CD Projekt Red has coming up next, but we know it's also developing a Cyberpunk 2077 follow-up, and there are other things in the early stages of development like Project Hadar.

Best game intro ever to my opinion and i bought it super cheap cause you know...physical.
Cyberpunk 2077 at launch was an unmitigated disaster and rightfully some people will never trust them again.
That being said, Phantom Liberty did actual wonders for the whole game and for those of us who were willing to jump back in was a genuine delight.
I'm really looking forward to whatever Cyberpunk 2 ends up being, but I will be a bit wary of it at launch.
I got the game steelbook and all for 10 bucks at best buy when the game was in a poor state. I only bought it because it had a steelbook and man did they turn that game around.
I played this for a couple hours and bounced straight off it but congrats on the sales that a hell of a lot!
Bought it cheap just before the ‘next gen’ patch and played on Series X via a physical disc. It’s utterly brilliant (and with the DLC built-in it’s even better), and I will be tempted to play again with the PS5 Pro version at some point. I just hope I’m still around to play the sequel…
Love the game. Bought it digitally.
Booted it up a few years after launch and they still haven’t fixed basic things like camera control. There’s an Invert-Y Axis option in the settings, but it only affects the camera while on foot. The moment you get in a vehicle it flip flops back to up is up and down is down, forcing you to adapt without a choice. There is no vehicle specific toggle on console.
It’s like whoever was supposed to playtest this feature flipped the setting, walked around for a minute, saw it worked and checked the box and moved on. They never even bothered to get in a car and see if there was an issue. CD Projekt must have outsourced to the one cross eyed dullard who acts as Bethesda’s playtester, and the launch build certainly proves that.
It's an incredible game, replayed it recently and it still hits as hard a second time. The atmosphere, gameplay, fearless tackling of heavy, dark themes just managing to avoid it becoming exploitative is superb.
That said, an obligatory warning to people playing this on base PS5 soon: the PS5 Pro patch severely messed with some aspects of the performance. Aiming was nuked (either much too slow or much too fast), the 'scan' option had some weird glitches and it became generally cumbersome to control.
That was a couple months ago, so hopefully it's been re-patched now.
I played it on release on a base ps4. Had plenty of problems and absolutely should not have released in that state but it wasn't completely broken as is often suggested. It was bad but it was playable. I got through it, platinumed it farly swiftly and then got offered a full refund which i gladly took.
Other studios would kill for these sales numbers. It's really impressive when you compare that a lot of games are considered a success if they sell like 5 to 10 million copies.
I really liked it I was just bummed we only got one DLC.
@Mr-Cage me too, got it for $10 bucks, and really tried, 3 times to get into it, just can't.
As impressive as this is, they are probably including Phantom Liberty in this.
@aj21009 Yeah it's not my type of game at all just not into it luckily there's other games hahaha
@Balaam_ That's bizarre because I play inverted for Y-axis and everything works fine. I literally just booted it up to double check I hadn't somehow not noticed in vehicle. But no the camera is still inverted fine on bike or in car.
@Swandivetotheasphalt I gave up with it on launch day, but have started to stream in from PSPlus and now the problems are gone, the game is beautifully done.
I still can't believe I got this game for $5. It's a top 3 rpg for me and in my top 5 of all time. Just utterly unreal game.
@Dart-TheRedDragoon They specifically say it's base game and Ultimate which has PL packaged in. If it included individual PL sales, there'd be no reason to not have said it.
I bought the original PS4 physical release. It played ok on PS4 Pro, but not great. After 30 or so hours, I knew that the game was good enough to double dip and I bought it for PC, where I played another 100 plus hours on my old gaming rig. Then once the PS5 version released, I played another few hundred hours on multiple play throughs. Cyberpunk 2077 is one of my favorite games ever.
Are they including in the 40mil the number of PS4 copies sold that were refunded on PS4? I mean there's no real reason for them not too, and its possible Sony themselves refunded the $ so they don't even know how many copies were refunded, but at the time it sounded like a lot.
40 mil for a new IP still seems like a ton to me so congrats to them.
Ah, yes, hooray to the game that popularized, “Release a broken game, take a few years to fix it at the expense of the players that bought the broken game, and get the industry to celebrate that they fixed it by giving them awards.”
I know a lot of people love this game now, but it started a worrying trend thats still on-going. If the game would’ve released 20 years ago, there never would’ve been a redemption arc and the game would’ve been inexcusable.
Fully deserved. Absolutely amazing game.
Mmmm I might be a part of the problem of the digital future from Sony. I bought the disc version at launch then got sick of putting the disc in and out so bought the digital version. I'm sorry, team. Sniff! It's not the first or last time I've done that.
Up there with RDR2 as one of my favourite ever games
I have the ps4 disc version, digital version and the ultimate whatever you want to call edition (birthday gift) and I still haven't finished the game.
It's in my backlog, hope I can finish it this year after CD, Pragmata, SH2r and RE9.
Played it at launch and didn’t like it too much. I never went back to it, though, so maybe it did get better.
Bought a physical xbox one copy at launch. Bought a digital copy on series x|s on sale, so i could play on my s while camping. Bought it again on pc, on sale so i could play on my laptop while in korea. The cross-save ability was a huge factor. And one more time on switch 2. The entire game w/dlc was on cart, how could i say no? 😅My name is veganh and I have a problem.
Good thing they eventually finished development. It would have been much better to do so before release, not 3 years after.
I somehow doubt they learned anything since they want to release 3 Witcher games in 6 years. Hopefully I'm wrong.
If they ever decided to add a third person update I would play it.
