Halo's PS5 Debut Can Be Played Entirely in Third-Person if You Want 1

Halo is the quintessential console first-person shooter, let’s be honest. Yes, games like DOOM released on the PS1 and GoldenEye 64 teased what was possible, but Halo: Combat Evolved refined the formula and made the genre finally feel at home on a controller.

But us PS5 players really do like our third-person shooters, eh? And upcoming remake Halo: Campaign Evolved has us covered, with a third-person toggle that allows you to play the entire game over Master Chief’s shoulder.

This is just one of 42 unlockable ‘Skulls’, collectibles which include modifiers and allow you to change the way the game plays. Other options will allow you to remove the HUD, increase enemy health, or even add confetti when you get a headshot.

Considering there’s no competitive multiplayer included here – there is both local and online co-op, with crossplay – all of these modifiers should really add to the release’s replay value.

And while I personally think it looks a bit wrong to play Halo in third-person, I’m certainly not going to argue against the option. In fact, I may be tempted to do a playthrough from the alternative perspective, once I’ve already beaten the campaign a couple of times.

If you’re itching for more first-person footage of the game, you can check out almost 30 minutes of gameplay from the ‘Assault on the Control Room’ level above.

From my perspective, there aren’t any huge surprises here – if you’ve played Halo before, then you should largely know what to expect – but it looks like the dev has really nailed the flow of the combat gauntlets, and the visuals look spectacular.

Of course, if you want a taste of how good it’ll look on the PS5 Pro, then you can check out even more footage through here.

Will you be playing Halo in first-person as it was intended or with this new third-person perspective? Let us know below.
