For the people who have never played Halo, you are in for a real treat. It is a great game. I played it all those years ago when it first released.

I'm not too bent out of shape over the lack of MP. I would have loved it, but you have to assume that Halo Studios is cooking up a new entry, though with the new focus on exclusives, who knows if it will ever release on PS.

If anyone is craving that arena shooter feel, Splitgate is an adequate replacement. Definitely not as good and the aesthetics are way worse, but the game itself is pretty fun in bursts.

Halo Combat Evolved was never about multiplayer. Halo 2 is the one that showed off Xbox Live and was a massive multiplayer hit.

I wonder if the remakes of Halo 2 and 3 will be exclusive or Microsoft will decide to port the remakes for PS5 and keep only the new games exclusive...

No chance I would purchase this - they could just move back to Xbox console exclusivity for the next instalment.

Plus I owned at least one Halo game, back when I had a 360, and thought it was overrated.

@trev666 yeah. It’s a shame and I do think that will impact sales. No multiplayer and no forward investment in the series as no further games are coming to PS5. Strange half in/half out strategy by Xbox. Problem is, how to put the genie back in the bottle. Halo, Gears and Forza have now been on PS5.

I’m really looking forward to this! It’s a shame there isn’t a multiplayer as the gameplay is so accessible to newcomers, it would’ve built an online community immediately.

I hope Microsoft is able to get a multiplayer mode out before the next mainline Halo.

I was excited about this game, but I won't be picking it up. Why do I want to start the story if the other remakes are possibly not coming to PS5 now? Shelving the Gears of War: E-Day PS5 version has made me kind of regret getting Gears of War: Reloaded. I'm not going to keep buying the first part of a series with expectations to play the later entries (or prequels) being exclusive in doubt. I just don't trust anything that Microsoft says or does.

@wildcat_kickz If Xbox wants to keep Halo as flagship IP for just xbox then the next one wont be on PS. But if they want the Multiplayer to become big again they need all the systems they can get. It should be on PS5 Series and PC just like Call of Duty. Otherwise it will die off like Halo Infinite.

Of course it will look best on Pro and to me that’s the said thing about compared to XBOX own console series x.

Trouble is now with gears e day not coming to PS after the original gears then a no show for gears e day.
A good few PS5 owners are thinking stuff you Microsoft, we are not buying the remakes for you just to leave us out of the next main game.

@Blauwe_Chimay the remake will have splitscreen co-op, people are complaining about the lack of competitive multiplayer. Which the original Halo CE had, but only locally. It was not the selling point of that game.

Bluetrain7 has the right idea. You know the saying “Fool me once…”. Microsoft doing exclusives on a case-by-case basis fits their idea perfectly. Keep customers in the dark and do whatever you want when you want. If they don’t know, how is the customer going to.

Better off playing the safe bet (especially with all the great games out there and coming soon), and not bother getting it. People are worried about multiplayer, but what if it turns out like Starfield (buggy) or the full game isn’t even on the physical disc. You can’t trust this company. Why support them?

@MrStark I would also point out their 'clear' strategy that said all multiplayer games are going multiplatform and all previously announced games will remain as multiplatform.

As you highlighted, the next Halo will have multiplayer.

I'm probably done buying any of the games they release on Playstation tbh why support them if they're just going to make the next game in the series exclusive. I'll just go back to buying cheap Gamepass codes to play anything I'm interested in.

@FishDude I do and don't agree with this. Obviously, if they want a larger player pool, then they need to make it multiplatform. Even Sony is doing this with their MP games. But Xbox does seem to be making moves to try and revitalize their console platform. Even though Halo MP would do worse if locked to Xbox and PC, they might view it as a worthwhile trade-off to try and get their console prestige back, especially if the next Halo MP is of high quality.

That said, I think a multiplatform release is more likely if they do what they did for Infinite and make the MP a standalone free game. It's all up in the air at the moment, though.

@NerdyPaul Except that's not what I think a lot of us are saying. I think exclusives are great for both systems. What we are saying is that we are not willing to shell out money for the first part in a series that they declared was multiplatform only for them to change midstream and declare the series exclusive again/leave it in doubt. Ex: Why would I buy the first book in a series of novels that will then be unavailable for me to read in my native language starting with the next volume?

Love exclusives for both consoles--all or them. But don't say, "I'm gonna share my toys, psych--I'll decide if I want to share any of the same kind in the future."

@Weebleman Asha Sharma "The plan's the plan until it's not the plan". That tells you everything you need to know about taking Microsoft at face value. They will change as often as they need to get what they want and those execs won't care who they fudge off in the process. The figures on the bottom line is all that matters.

If this exclusivity doesn't work the way they are gambling on, you can be sure that decision will get reversed somewhere down the line.

Halo has multiplayer, but it is not a "big multiplayer game." It is still partly singleplayer. The types of games Matt Booty was referring to are the live service ones that are primarily sold because of their multiplayer, not their singleplayer components. CoD, Fallout 76, and even State of Decay 3 would fall into this category

Played coop but didn't finish the story. Me and my friends finished the game multiple times. It was all about vs, at least for me and my friends.

Be careful what you wish for...

Xbox can make all their games exclusive - you are totally right on this.
(I wouldn't actually care that much as out of all the games launched I have genuinely only bought 1, and that had to be on sale - for context I buy about 1 full price game per month total).

But if they fail to make the extraordinary headway you seem to suggest with this strategy - highly unlikely in most peoples estimations given their userbase size, and Gamepass - then Microsoft (as the parent company) will just enforce a hard reset.

That hard reset could be as weak as no more exclusives ever again, or as strong as a complete shuttering of Xbox as a platform. With Xbox studios continuing as a proper multiplatform publisher.

Personally, I think the latter is more likely given the damage they have done to how they are viewed by PS owners over all this (as per @Weebleman 's replies).

The timing might be right as they may still have opportunity to cancel Helix, or ensure it is nothing more than a PC in a box.

The saddest part in all this is that in the meantime a downsizing of some of their studios may take place.

So, just like when certain people were cheering on Xbox's aquisitions of Activision, which was the trigger point for all of this, be careful what you wish for...

I'm already so tired of all this vacillating from Microsoft and all the discord that follows. Honestly wish they'd just piss off back to their own garden so we dont have to hear it anymore.

@Rich33 agree with everything you said. I've always said (across a number of sites) exclusives are important as we need all platforms thriving to better each other. In turn, its better for us folks.

I am fortunate enough to own each console but the uncertainty and constant changing is something that puts others off investing in xbox at the minute (in my opinion). Folks who own just a PS will be wary to jump onto a franchise if the rug gets pulled later. The majority of people won't buy a new console to play the sequel and that probably means they won't get on board in the first place.

Then theres the gamepass conundrum. The majority of folks on xbox likely have this (possibly stacked into the future) so that doesnt bring in new money, which is what all these companies want. If they dont put them on gamepass day one, folks will wait for it to arrive, if they do, no new money. Its a tough call either way.

The reason I pushed Mr Stark (no gang signs, please) to answer the question I posed was simply that he clearly loves the brand, which is fine, but if someone who loves them can't have faith in what they say, where does that leave them.

It is a tough one for them - I believe very strongly that exclusives sell platforms, but I just don't see how Xbox can go down this route now.

Personally, I think the timing is awful, and their mixed messaging (as you were pointing out to Mr Stark) has been terrible for them.

I was already at a low point of trust with Xbox, and it would be very true to say this has seriously affected the chance of me buying their games.
They have not proven that they are serious with being multiplatform for a few reasons, most notably that in the most part their Pro enhancements have been way below average (though a couple have bucked this trend and been outstanding). Couple this with the fact that it feels like some of their base PS5 versions have been weaker than expected technically.
If I wanted to 'prove myself' as a proper multiplatform publisher I would ensure that every game was matched technically for base PS5 and Series X, and that Pro enhancements were top tier (like Forza 5).
They have also continued to flirt with the idea of timed exclusives etc, and mixed messaging over the last couple of years.

I just don't know how Xbox could make things any worse for themselves at present - I actually think they are at a lower point now in perception terms, than they were in the period moving from Xbox 360 to Xbox One, and like many I switched from the 360 to PS4.

Edit 2: This was announced after forza 6 was for PS5. Thats still coming as it fits with the 'everything announced' part of their strategy.

I think people would be pissed if Microsoft released a multiplayer-only Halo game (which is apparently in development)..Now they're releasing a singleplayer-only one, and while there has been some disappointment, it's not considered the end of the world by many fans.

@Weebleman All I'm saying is they seem to have simplified it. If it's currently on pre order, or listed as coming to ps5, then it's coming. If it has NOT been mark red or listed for sale on PS, then it may not be coming. It does seem silly, even as a Xbox preferred gamer, to only to the 1 gears and 1 halo, but they need to do this. Asha was brought in to improve things. Nudella saw Phil's way wasn't working, if I was a lost cause he would have killed it off. Iirc he cancelled his windows phone too. He's not above axing things.

However, you seem to have added in multiple caveats that they have not. They mentioned nothing about pre order requirements (there is also no pre order up for Forza 6, still coming), nothing about being listed, nothing about being marked so if you have a link to this I'd absolutely be interested. At present its already announced, still coming out on them all.

A second executive had now been interviewed and again confirmed that anything previously announced will remain multiplatform. Again, no mentions of pre orders, listings, markings or already on sale. So its still if its announced, its staying on them all.

So again, Halo meets those requirements, and by their own rules that they have now set out and stated clearly not once, but twice, Halo will remain multiplatform as its already announced.

Again, this was after Forza 6.

Unless they dont follow those clearly set rules which instantly causes more muddying of the water for folks on either side of the fence.

Personally, I think they should just say straight out 'all xbox studios are exclusive, with the exception of acti/blizz/etc...', simply because they cant afford to pull them all. Thats the perfect balance for them right there. Zero effort, it literally writes itself. But they should do it now so its clear, folks move on and they can focus on being xbox.

As i explained in a comment above, I wasn't calling him names or having a go, I just wanted to get his opinion but he seemed more intent on pointing the finger at me, calling marathon out for some reason and avoiding the answer. Was all a bit silly as I do genuinely think they should put more games exclusive. I just get fed up of the 180's MS constantly do at present. Pick a lane and stick with it. That's all most folks want.

It's always been the music for me; that sound defines a whole generation of gaming. I still have the original and my OG Xbox and the soundtrack still takes me back to playing for the first time when it released.
