Asobo Studio has resurfaced to confirm Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, its prequel to the two current A Plague Tale games, is still on course for a 2026 release.
The team shared in a blog post that the "release is almost here", and in the next few months, it'll be focusing on "testing, balancing, and refining the game mechanics to deliver an experience as challenging as it is unforgettable". Resonance is set 15 years before Innocence and Requiem, and has you playing as Sophia, who first appeared in the second game.
As a 22-year-old, Sophia is shunned by her old mentor, so she "defies him in a perilous treasure hunt that will shape her forever". You can watch the original announcement trailer from a year ago below:

I actually loved playing Plague Requiem when it came to extra, thought the story was brillaint and the voice acting was top notch, gameplay was kinda meh though. Never been a massive fan of prequels because you kinda know where things head towards, but even so I'm looking forward to this.
About as excited as I am for a root canal.
It plays like a really poor TLoU knock off, and Hugo is one of the most infuriating characters I've ever encountered in a game.
"We've got a bazillion rats on-screen that cripple the framerate!" isn't much of a USP.
I think after going through the ending to requiem (possible post-credits, its been a while) I would much rather a follow up to that...
I was wondering what happened to this game the other day. They've been completely silent since the announcement trailer came out. Happy to see development is progressing smoothly. I love the first two games so I'll for sure be there for this one.
It’s been sitting on my shelf for years but I still haven’t played Requem yet… unbelievable amount of games released this gen 😅
I loved the first two games so this will definitely be getting purchased by myself
Cautiously looking forward to this, but also wondering how they will make it A Plague Tale with a different setting and characters.
Enjoyed both Plague games when I discovered through PS Plus so this is a definite Day 1 purchase
I'm pre-ordering as soon as possible. I loved her character in Requiem, and this one has completely different gameplay?! Sign me the F up!
If the gameplay changes then yes
Really looking forward to seeing more of this world, adored the first two Plague Tale games and I'm curious to see where they go with Sophia.
@HaveTheSauce Confirmed, it's more action-oriented with swordplay.
The first two games where absolutely amazing especially requiem the ending was just epic and unreal super hyped for this game I'm sure it will be amazing like the others
I have played through the both and while first game had issues I have enjoyed both of them. I have bought the second game when it released and it was much more polished and improved over the first one, so I have faith they will get the third game even better. Looking forward to it.
One of my most anticipated games. Let’s go!
Both A Plague Tale games were sublime so this is a no brainer for moi. However I would have preferred a modern day setting sequel which the ending of Requiem hinted at. Problem with that though barring some time travel nonsense none of the beloved characters from the other games would feature obviously.
It's a day one purchase for me, as I loved both games. I do wonder whether the rats will feature because I thought they were drawn to Hugo who obviously will not exist in this game. After rewatching the trailer there is no sign of the rats, and it's unclear what drives the protagonist in this new game. I have faith in the studio though, so have no qualms about pre-ordering it when it becomes available to do so...
I don't know, I've rarely been interested with a prequel because I already know how it will end/how the future ends up.
I love the plague tale series but its because of Amicia and Hugo. Not sure how I feel about a prequel. The whole game is suspenful but I think because your these children. Until Hugo goes beast mode but I will wait for more trailers to see. Maybe Sony gives us this for free. They gave us 2 when it was pretty new 🤞
I really wanted to like the Plague Tale games because I liked the setting and premise - I just couldn’t get into the gameplay.
Well, I liked them enough to finish them both. If the gameplay is different or improved enough I’ll give the new one a shot
I really enjoyed the first game, and thought the open-level sections of the 2nd were really enjoyable. Story however was very poor and disappointing. Hoping this takes all the good elements and tells a great tale
@Fiendish-Beaver It's also been confirmed that this one won't feature rats, but the Macula is there, just not "out" as it's in the first two games. However, there will be other supernatural threats, aka The Minotaur.
As a big fan of narrative action adventures and especially historical fiction, I liked the first two games a lot. I also find this level of AA development to be extremely charming from time to time. The games aren’t nearly as polished as the TLoU games, which are what seem to be the inspiration, but the smaller development team often bring unique creative choices and fresh ideas. Some of the mechanics and narrative choices are hit-or-miss, but overall the games fill a very singular space and if you’re a fan of Sony’s style of game design and storytelling but want something a little different then definitely check these out. Excited to see what this prequel will be like!
@MrPeanutbutterz It definitely has a similar feel to TLOU, but 'poor knock off' seems extremely unfair to me. I enjoyed it more than TLOU in some cases.
I loved plague tale innocence
I like requiem
not sure prequels ever work
That's interesting. Thank you, @Divergent95. Not sure how I feel about a potential enemy the size of the Minitour, and how that fits with 'feel' of a the first two games. I'm still going to be there day one...
@Fiendish-Beaver If I remember correctly, the Minotaur will be constantly stalking you, and you constantly need to be on the move. Sounds like it won't miss the horror feel from the original two lol. And yes, I'm pre-ordering ASAP.
This is one of those games that I know I want without knowing too much about it, @Divergent95. I just know I loved the first two games, and have faith that they can do it again...
@Fyz306903 Nah the combat encounters are trash. Throwing a rock at a conveniently placed bell? I've had more excitement doing the dishes. Hugo as a substitute for Ellie? Definitely not.
@Fiendish-Beaver True true, I'm definitely going dark from now on until launch. Hope we both enjoy the game!

@MrPeanutbutterz Okay, my fault for being too shady but you're the one who's calling the game trash in the first place, calling it a ripoff of TLOU. It's fine to say IT'S NOT MY THING, but you're genuinely dragging it like it's an abomination when in reality the games are critically acclaimed.
@Divergent95 Them being critically acclaimed is here nor there. I've played them, I think they're trash. I'm expressing my opinion.
And saying "it's not my thing" wouldn't be true either. TLoU is one of my favourite games ever. So it is very much my thing, just not like this.
Hope this somehow leads to a ps5 pro update for requiem
Not happy that they totaly changed the game in temrs of gameplay. It seems like a total different thing from the Plague Tale. who knows, might be good.
Looking forward to this a lot. The 2nd one is still in my top 5 best looking games ever but it struggled on the base PS5. Now the Pro is here it should run great
I loved the first plague tale so much, until near and to the end. Once the “twist” came it wasn’t for me. I would like to give the second one a shot sometime though.
Give me more action and I buy it
Hopefully you will play as a rat in this one, at least for part of the game
Sounds like an August - September release, stacking up against the invisible "forcefield" bubble surrounding GTA 6's release date.
September at least is becoming very crowded this year, and with heavy hitters no less.
Loved the first 2 games a lot, getting the prequel day one is a certainty for me.
