Reports of layoffs at PlayStation are doing the rounds again, with the suggestion being that Sony's push into the mobile gaming space is on the verge of collapse.
Last week, news broke that PlayStation Studios was shuttering Dark Outlaw Games, before the outfit had even shipped its first title. However, news of additional layoffs — specifically from within PlayStation Studios' mobile division — ended up being buried beneath PS5-focused headlines.
That story's now getting more attention, as mobile-specific site Mobilegamer.biz claims that "PlayStation has cut around 50 staff from its Studio Business Group", backing the original report by Bloomberg's Jason Schreier.
Mobilegamer.biz says that it reached out to Sony on the situation, having read — through an employee's LinkedIn profile — that PlayStation Studios' mobile arm had been shut down completely. The company hasn't responded at the time of writing.
Again, Sony's attempt to try and crack the mobile market, primarily by leveraging established first-party properties like Horizon and Ratchet & Clank, has been thoroughly unconvincing.
Naturally, news of these layoffs will call the status of Sony's current mobile projects into question. Both MLB The Show Mobile and Horizon Steel Frontiers will be under even more scrutiny, while Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble — which honestly looked decent in its initial reveal — could be cut loose long before its full launch.
In any case, we'll probably be hearing more about the state of PlayStation Studios' mobile division in the near future — especially if former employees start speaking out.
