Max Hejtmánek, a former Czech-to-English translator at the Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 developer Warhorse Studios, claims they were fired from the studio and their role has been replaced with AI.
In a post to the game's Reddit page, it's reported Hejtmánek was called into a meeting and told his position in the studio will become "obsolete" next month. This is because the RPG team will reportedly use AI for "all translations" henceforth because it makes the company "more effective" and it "saves finances".

Hejtmánek had voiced his concerns surrounding the use of AI within the studio previously, but he didn't think that would cost him his role. "I feel incredibly betrayed by the management of the company I've come to care about greatly these past almost 4 years, and am heartbroken I won't get to see my friends and colleagues at the office every day," he said.
It's suggested Hejtmánek was completely blindsided by the firing, because while Warhorse Studios doesn't have its next project officially confirmed, he still had work to do. He was "laid off near the end of a normal work day during which I was completely oblivious to what was coming".
During his time working on Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, Hejtmánek helped with the dialogue, quest logs, item names, and marketing material for the game and its expansions. His identity and publisher of the post in question were verified by Reddit mods, and Hejtmánek's LinkedIn page has been updated to state he no longer works at Warhose Studios.

Why did you leave out that the translator.
Changed things that was not part of the actual narrative that needed to be translated.
And people still support AI 🤦.
"Human localisation reportedly replaced with AI"
And this is bad because?
Look, I've consuming media from Japan since forever but the last few years human localization has been the main problem, mainly because localizers keep inserting their political takes on a media that didn't have any political undertones and on an audience that didn't ask for any of it either.
I'd rather take the wrong translations from the 90's than the stuff we have today.
I wouldn't trust AI to translate yet. Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 was perfect in English. I think you would lose some quality going to an AI translated version.
Be ready for some really trash quality translations if this is what they do.
@CielloArc surprised you didn’t just flat out say translators are “woke.”
@CielloArc Atleast AI can't be controlled are you serious...
Even more stupid i want wrong translation losing context.... Man people are getting more dumb by the minute. I see how great AI translations are on Netflix its shamefull.
@CielloArc I mean its bad because of the reason in the article, it's directly replacing a human who has worked hard and has a difficult skill set to get to where they are.
AI is a direct threat to many peoples lifelong livelihoods, with fewer and fewer alternatives for them.
I don't know what you mean by inserting political takes but typically when I hear that I have a feeling a disagreement is incoming, so I'll stick to the "AI replacing jobs is bad because jobs are quite helpful in regards to survival and having a life that's not always terrible"
Good localization cannot be done with AI. It can probably help, a lot. But there's no way it can do 100% of it. I'm skeptical.
I think that AI translators for a story will miss a lot of things that a human translator would add. Subtle humor, wordplay, puns, jokes, made up fantasy terms, regional accents, etc.
The translation for Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined is impressive with all of its puns and accents. I don't think that AI can do as good of a job as a human for this, and the localization of DQ7R is one of its best parts to me.
Well yeah this will be the case for any developer or in fact anyone who uses a computer for work from here on in. If you hear of people being laid off and it’s computer based work you can bet they are being replaced by ai. Time to get a trade folks.
It sucks but from reading other parts of that post when it came out;
1) They have a lead translator who has been there 10 years (i.e. from the start) so it's not completely replacing the team.. for now.
2) If they're in the very early stages of whatever they're next making, they probably don't need two people for the job currently.
I imagine there's a fair bit of downsizing of teams after the release of a game as studios, especially of this size, can't keep an entire team on standby for their next game.
I certainly don't make any apologies for it but it sounds pretty rubbish and it seems so tough out there for people in the industry at the present time, even more so if even part of peoples' work can be "replaced" by AI.
I sincerely apologize for short sighted stupidity of us, Czechs. We were under communism for over 40 years and some of our people (management of Warhorse Studio) suffered huge brain damage. Intelligence of these people dropped under zero and still believe that "good idea" is better than common sense. I apologize these people are still in the lead of some businesses. We still didn't got rid of them. I'm sorry.
@djlard not to defend communists. But do you really believe when I decision like this is made it’s due to communism? Kinda feels like corporate greed would be more a long the lines of a different ideology…
@SodaPop6548
Because political context does not directly translate to "woke", pun not intended.
@djlard Weird to blame typical capitalist greed on checks notes communism and brain damage.
Without a job, hopefully he won't go as hungry as Henry.

@AhmadSumadi Communists tried to screw minds of whole nation and still 1/3 of our nation is extremely short sighted. And lots of these "simple people" are in the lead. It is hard work to restore thinking, because we were teached "don't think, do as we say". So lots of czech people in the lead don't think in long terms. Only fast decisions.
We need Skynet to rid the world of executives who are pushing AI. I'm not suggesting they get killed. Just scare them enough so they retreat to their bunkers. This way the world can finally improve.

Yeah its pretty damn tragic that KC2 will be the last great game for them. They have gone heavy into AI and well that's that. Will say its nice the subreddit what is pretty fanboyish with KC isn't defending or liking these moves from the dev.
@CielloArc Yeah like remember in the 90's the western dub took Sailor Moon and made two of the team who were lesbians and a couple and made them cousins. Anime is extremely political and "woke" dude and always has been.
@1970sGamer How can you defend something you don't understand, lol? Not even the people who create Gen Ai understand how it draws its conclusions.
@CielloArc I also hate all the woke nonsense inserted for modern audiences but I prefer that to translation done by AI.
@DennisReynolds I was hoping a third one was in the works? I'm currently playing the first one and I think the second one will be next. It's already one of the most unique games I've played, they really know how to build a world along with everything in it. The series must be a lot more niche than I thought. Unless you mean they are making a third one and slowly removing the human element/the real creativity behind the game.
@DennisReynolds being the intent of the author is fine but adding bits is a bit different. I'm not a fan. It's fairly typical of "Progressives" currently to insert their own life story and morals into anything and everything they can. It's not needed, nor respectful of the original creator. If it's their own creation then it's totally fine and can stand on its own merits, which goes for anyone.
Plenty of low skilled workers have been replaced by machinery and more efficient kinds of new tech in history from cotton mills to car makers or even self service checkouts in our supermarkets. This is just the next step in evolution, sucks but this isn't anything new, it's progress and life. I struggle to see the difference to be honest, I feel sorry for the guy but it isn't my problem. Get a different job. Life can suck. It's unfortunately his turn for a bad bit of life. Maybe it will free up some funds spent better elsewhere in the games development and be better for me.
@CielloArc I really want an example of these politically charged subs.
I bet A.I couldn't do localization like Alexander O. Smith did with Vagrant Story or FF Tactics.
sigh...we're in the worst timeline huh 😔
@SEVENTEENSOILS Changing things to suit the countries its in is pretty common in translations and localizations and it goes both ways. If anything Asia is more extreme with it. Still name me examples of western versions heavily changing things against the authors intents.
@DennisReynolds I mean, I don't have examples to hand as I don't watch anime. Although I have friends that do and have noted many such things. Using AI will likely give some examples (ironically) 😂
Edit: I do remember some of the Persona games had some odd translations pretty far removed from the original Japanese.
@SEVENTEENSOILS Right so trust me bro then 🙄
Yeah as i said localisation changes happens all the time no matter the country. Funny enough the biggest changes happened more in the 4Kids era where anything death or sex was removed, basically all the things the anti-woke brigade hate came from the original version and was changed to suit the needs the fragile right wing conservatives who ran entertainment back then, its why Sailor Moon had a lesbian couple turned into cousins. Funny that isn't it.
Unfortunate, translators/localisers being particular is one thing, the ones that do follow the requirements or genuinely good localisation is fine.
If business deals have staff who are 'convincing' that's just the way it is, if people are that stupid to not understand intentions of people then they are just bad staff/business people and that unaware or let it happen and get published instead of thorough checks, why aren't they being thorough enough then? QA or localisers or freelancers or programmers or whoever.
AI has it's issues, it can try to work it out but only to a point of understanding different points of humour or slang or whatever else is needed for such time periods or accuracy or whatever spin on things they want to make. A human can still understand it way better then an AI can of what is intended. Well if they understand all those details and more well enough.
People are people, them being difficult is what it is, those who do it correctly or are told to do it a different way is another.

I bet a disgruntled employee is an excellent source for this too.

@Thrillho there is no shortage of people fired from any industry that you couldn’t find to say something bad about wherever they were fired from. I’ve never met a person who was fired and said “yeah they made the right choice” like we all haven’t been at companies were you went “I could see why they would for that person,” lol.
@SBBuds there’s a lot of unemployed internet dwellers who don’t understand EVERY company is using AI now. Even their favorite companies. They just don’t see it yet. Anyone ready to boycott AI better make watching paint dry their new hobby because there isn’t anything else you can do that isn’t touched by AI in some form at this point.
ai is the future nothing will put that genie back in the bottle..
Translator here: they still need to check the output and edit it. Without this process there will be silly stuff sometimes, at least for the time being.
The AI bubble needs to pop already! The sooner it happens, the better.
@MidnightDragonDX it's literally better and cheaper than hiring people for translations
@SEVENTEENSOILS Persona 5 Royal removed a scene from the original game featuring two gay guys because apparently gay people can't be bad or evil. It wasn't the localisation team that did it. The japanese devs did it.
@MidnightDragonDX The bubble will be pop up sooner than later. Recently openAI announced Sora will be shutdown because it's crazy expensive to run it (it cost $1 million /day!) and many countries banned the app because of deepfake.
@JohntheRaptor I remember that 😂 weird choice. Wasn't there some stuff in the earlier ones too? It's been too many years for my shoddy memory...
Ai isn’t a bubble! People thinking it’s going to collapse and disappear are on lots of copium.
@SEVENTEENSOILS and yet you can't provide me with examples still 🤷♂️
@SEVENTEENSOILS Im not saying you're wrong about what you're saying in general but I'm a fan of the anime Dark Gathering and I've read the manga and nothing was changed for its western release.
@UltimateOtaku91 I have no personal firsthand knowledge. If I remember correctly (from what was listed) it was something about changing the language around one of the "problematic" relationships or something so it'd sound more appropriate.
@SEVENTEENSOILS Yeah its hard to take AI searches seriously especially when someone else already pointed out its wrong. The Cardcaptors one is basically what Sailor Moon, Yugioh and such had done in that anything deemed "adult" was removed or changed. The whole changing ideology BS is just not really accurate.
As for gaming yeah removing sexualisation of underage characters is a good thing.
First main man leaving and this. I can't see next Warhorse game reaching the same heights as KCD2.
