Xbox has announced its upcoming game The Outer Worlds 2 won't retail for $80 after all.

Obsidian Entertainment's sci-fi RPG sequel is scheduled to launch in late October, and it was set to be the first game from Microsoft sporting the new upper price tag of $79.99.

This was met with a fair amount of backlash from fans, as you might expect, and the result is that the game's RRP will be set at $69.99 instead.

The lower price point was recently confirmed on social media:

Microsoft also provided a statement about the matter to IGN, confirming that all its "full-priced holiday releases" will be the same.

"We’re focused on bringing players incredible worlds to explore, and will keep our full priced holiday releases, including The Outer Worlds 2, at $69.99 – in line with current market conditions."

If you've already pre-ordered The Outer Worlds 2 at $79.99, Xbox says you can expect a refund from wherever you ordered from, and to allow a few days depending on the retailer.

Of course, on Xbox's own ecosystem, subscribers to Game Pass won't need to pay any extra when the game launches, but it should come as some small relief to those outside of that to pay a somewhat more reasonable figure.

Switch 2 launch title Mario Kart World famously set a precedent for the 80-dollar game, rekindling debates about whether games are too expensive and encouraging some publishers to test the richer waters.
