A couple of weeks back, we reported on the file size for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Weighing in at 42.2GB, we noted that it would require a reasonable chunk of your PlayStation 5's storage space — but it turns out that the actual download size is quite a bit smaller.
PlayStation Game Size now reports that the new, compressed download size comes in at just 33.6GB, which isn't bad at all. That's a roughly 9GB difference between the full game and the file that you'll be downloading to your console. It could well be that the PS5's touted compression tech is playing a part here.
Good news, then, but are you still going to make room for Ratchet & Clank's upcoming adventure? Give your PS5 a thumbs up in the comments section below.

This is as it should be. Small sizes, especially if you also play from a disc. I hope more developers will try to do this.
Nice to know BUT i don't mind what size this game is as I can't wait to play this beauty!
It just makes me annoyed when I see developers that put probably a 15-20 hour game if you collect everything into 33gb and publisher like activation make a game with one map that uses a relatively simple texture palate over 100gb.
RE8 had a file size under 30gb on ps4 and was still a really large and good looking game. Perhaps file size compression has just gotten better.
Expect the next call of duty to still be 250gb though for no f---ing reason
@Ben7982 Its because COD (im assuming you mean that) isnt optimised for PS5 so the devs HAVE to duplicate textures all over the place to allow texture streaming to appear as smooth as it can be with the lowest common denominator in mind (spindle HDDS).
@solocapers there are tools to compile assets differently and prevent this on some platforms, or they could author their own.
Personally I just think being the largest popular game gives COD free press. All publicity is good publicity ultimately
Just over 30GB is a right result for those of us trying to manage our SSD storage space, i.e. everyone! Great news.
Decent size, I've noticed alot of games I've played on the PS5 so far have been reasonable. Shows the tech is there and they are utilising it. Looking forward to this game, I'm sure it will be very good.
@Martijn87 do people really still think using a disc takes up less internal drive space than digital?
@solocapers I know why, but even with hard drives in mind you get games like ghost of tsushima or destiny 2 that can have large expansive worlds and keep the game under 70gb on a hard drive. Activision are just lazy and don't want to put the effort in.
@ShogunRok yes I will make space for this game on my PS5.
When I get a PS5,
Someday...😭
Having an external 2TB connected up to my PS5, I have barely used my internal SSD storage.
I think the only games installed on my internal are Spider-Man Miles Morales, Astro's Playroom, and Demon's Souls (as they are the only PS5 games I have played so far).
I have plenty of space for R&C.
@GamingFan4Lyf How’s Demon’s Souls? I was so close to buying it yesterday, but chickened out for fear of my gaming skills not being up to the task. Saw it in Game for £42.99 pre-owned.
@Porkman85 @The_New_Butler I thought it still worked like that, guess I was mistaken
@The_New_Butler Nothing to really do with Sony, Kraken compression is a general thing.

Unleash the Kraken!
@GamingFan4Lyf You can't run them from that, though, so if you have a few titles on the go (copying is a PITA) then the space will vanish. I do run all my PS4 library from a 1TB external, though.
Excited for the SSD upgrades to come, I'll be there day-one for an additional 2TB.
Sounds like a successor to DoubleSpace (MS-DOS 6.0, kids) though hopefully slightly less crappy...?
@Martijn87 You're not alone - I assumed that the PS4 did the same as the PS3 and cached a load of game data on the hard drive but still pulled files from the disc. Seems it just uses it as a DRM check or installs if the game isn't already present.
@PlayNation5
Then why is it that PS5 games are often smaller than series x games, if it’s a general thing now?
This is much smaller than I would have ever guessed since the game has such amazing visuals, animations, and such diverse and expansive worlds. Very impressed.
Honestly, if any triple-A game is under 60GB I'm pretty surprised lol.
@thefourfoldroot Microsoft didn’t use it for Xbox, I think they have their own proprietary method. Besides, Series X games have to be compatible with Xbox One for now and the One lacks any hardware for Kraken decompression. The PS5 has a dedicated custom controller for this, I believe.
@The_New_Butler Agreed, but the OP made it sound like Sony created it. They didn’t.
Massive kudos for using it, though, as with the PCIE 4.0 SSD the load times are incredible already.
@The_Pixel_King I mean, I really enjoyed it - but I played all the other Soulsbourne games.
If you haven't played any of them, I recommend just diving into one on the cheap and, without feeling any shame in doing so, follow wiki's like fextralife. I personally feel like Demon's Souls is the easiest of the bunch I played, so it makes a good starting point.
I used to be super hesitant of the Soulsbourne games until I got Bloodborne on the cheap and just dove in.
@PlayNation5 I found copying PS4 games to the internal kind of useless. I don't feel the load times are drastically different compared to running from an external HDD. But my point was that I have so few actual PS5 titles, I don't have a storage issue on my PS5 right now. The rest of the games I have are PS4 titles, which install to the external by default.
@Porkman85 hand up, I used to till maybe a couple of years ago. Assumed it was still playing off the disk, considering the noise the PS4 made during gameplay!
Just finishing the (superb) 2016 Ratchet and Clank Platinum, then ready for the next instalment release day 👊🏼
All hail the SSD!
Call of Duty Warzone patch alone can be 10Gigabytes lol
There'll always be space for this game on my SSD, no matter what
@Martijn87 Optical storage is too slow to run games from disc. The game is installed from that, patches are downloaded and everything is run off the internal storage. PS4 was the same.
