It was a bit of a late one when all was said and done, but Microsoft has finally concluded its E3 2019 press conference. Of course, a large portion of the show focused on exclusive titles from Xbox Studios, but there was a lot of third-party goodness for PS4 owners to munch on. Cyberpunk 2077 impressed in another trailer that has us hotly anticipating its eventual release next April, while From Software followed up on the unfortunate leak of its latest project, Elden Ring, with an intriguing trailer.
Microsoft then went on to provide some light details on its next generation console, but much like the PS5 reveal back in March, there's still a long way to go before we know the full story. What was your take on proceedings, though? Did the big green hardware manufacturer deliver, or were you left wanting more? Rev your chainsaw in the comments below.

It was perfectly fine but they're still not ready on the first-party front and it felt so bloated with games that simply didn't need to be there. Scarlet sounds identical to the PS5 (as expected) and I wasn't impressed with the Halo reveal at all.
Biggest bummer was the serious lack of gameplay, though. Like, they actively avoided showing actual games being played. I don't even know what Elden Ring is!
I feel it started off well, then got quite boring. Also showing barely anything from Halo must have been a pain for fans.
Meh. I guess overall it wasn't terrible and there were a few decent reveals and games that interest me but overall it wasn't worth the hype that a major E3 showcase should have.
Definitely feels like the end of a generation, which is weird because I expected Microsoft to be going full out for next gen now, but it just felt really weak from an Xbox point of view.
Started very well, kinda fell off in the back half. Some good things in there in but seems theyre all in on 2020. Conference overall was good but not as good as I was expecting. Suddenly Sony's decision doesnt seem too bad imo.
It needed a good editor to trim it so it had more punch. And way more gameplay. I mean Gears out in 3 months but no gameplay footage?!
A pity about double-fine I like there games.
Battletoad trailer looked ok I suppose. Not much else really clicked with me. Wasn’t bad or anything though.
Mediocre. No sense of pacing. Bloated.
At least Phil Spencer wasn't dragging people around to different themed rooms, though.
Nothing really that says I must buy an Xbox. I thought Ori looked ace, though.
Some good things I think. A bit too long in my opinion. I have to admit I was hoping that Miyamoto rumor was true.
As always the best games they showed will be available on PS as well.
It was good. They had less AAA original titles but some nice smaller creative stuff. A lot of corporate bull, and spouting about how Scarlett will be the most powerful console without actually knowing the full details of the completion is risky. They are investing a lot in technology but not so much AAA games. Same old numbers series shown for AAA titles.
Microsoft had an open goal given Sony's absence and they missed the shot almost completely. The distinct lack of gameplay for Xbox's biggest games was a real shocker. What were they thinking?
And 60 games sounds amazing on paper, but in practice it just made the show drag on and on and on. Kinda makes you appreciate how important it is to focus on the BIG games like Sony usually does. Quality over quantity.
The fact that Microsoft managed to disappoint me at E3 five years in a row is more impressive than anything they just showcased.
Were the rumours of two new gen consoles completely wrong?
Yeah lack of gameplay made it a poor showing. That Tales game looks pretty good though.
@JJ2 Scarlett isn't a console, it's a "project"
Showing no gameplay for their biggest games was really disappointing. I don't really know what Microsoft was thinking there.
io interactive is not going to x box.tha makers of hitman.they say they like they're independence.warner brothers is publishing them so I'm extremely happy.i I💖ve the hitman series.word up son
and borderlands 2 dlc is cool.word up son
did they even announce the next forza?
(did not watch the stream so forgive me)
@Enuo
Yea I get that but it seems they talked about one console.
okish. not many exclusives lot of 3rd party titles almost everything available on xb pass
@Ryall Double Fine have thankfully tweeted out that psychonauts 2 is still coming to all promised platforms, including PS4. That was the one part of the show that had be feeling glum so im glad that we will at least still be getting that one.
https://twitter.com/DoubleFine/status/1137829847131013120?s=19
Im honestly disappointed in Double Fine too. I appreciate they have mouths to feed, but their whole thing was about being independent. I wouldnt be surprised to see Tim Schaefer walk away in the future.
I thought it was good. A LOT of games (not all to my taste), not a lot of chat, Keanu 'John Wick' on stage, confirmation the next Xbox will be like the PS5, a new Studio joined up with Xbox, a fun DLC to rival Hot Wheels DLC in Forza Horizon, Gears looks to have an interesting co-op mode, but I do agree, not enough Game-play but the usual CGi reveal teasers.
Some glaring omissions - Forza Motorsport (its their turn this year), no Fable and numerous 'projects' that the newly acquired studios were working on before joining MS (Outer Worlds, Wasteland 3). Not overly impressed by Ninja Theory's first game either...
Both Microsoft and Sony are in the same boat to end the generation, 3 or so big 1st party games until the next thing comes along which will you’ll undoubtedly be able to play those three games on with better graphics. If you haven’t bought an XB1 yet (like me), you aren’t going to buy one now.
The most interesting thing they said however was their Streaming Service was starting up a month before Google’s Stadia. As someone without a horse in the race, I’m still curious to see which (or both) of them will end up with a bloody nose, and if Sony (or even Nintendo) will join them.
Gears will show its campaign off at Gamescom - Escape is a 3 person co-op survival mode...
Disappointing, but then, it is E3...
I mean this E3 is already my least favourite and I can remember. It’s just underwhelming and the lack of gameplay now is annoying
New ori game looks good but it's hardly a system seller!! Kinda hoping the first one and will of wisps make it to switch. Not much first party content to get excited about. Outer worlds looks decent and cyberpunk looks brilliant.
Tales of Arise, Cyberpunk 2077 yes please!
@get2sammyb yeah I agree with you Sammy.not enough gameplay.that halo showing was horrible.no gameplay.but x box try to make it seems like elden ring.is a Microsoft exclusive 🙈.anyways I'm glad they bought double fine studio and not io interactive the makers of hitman.hitman is great.and they said they love they're freedom.ps5 is going to be just as powerful as x box.word up son
Very Meh, no gameplay whatsoever in any game like seriously Microsoft!! . Very disappointing although lot of new games for PS4.
I didn't expect much and ended up really enjoying it.
Would have gone even better if the Bandai Namco games hadn't leaked.
Phantasy Star and Dragon Ball were surprises. Enjoyed seeing Cyberpunk and Keanu a lot. Didn't expect any gameplay for Elden Rings, just like when Bloodborne was announced.
So envious of their Elite controller. Sony need to get an official one made already.
I'm expecting very little from Bethesda in a few hours so it's pretty much down to Ubisoft to save this E3 for me. Maybe also Avengers
Sony can steal a march on xbox next year if Horizon Zero Dawn 2 as a launch title imo. I still think the Halo bubble has burst slightly, and Sony will be cruising on a wave of Death Stranding, TLOU2 and Ghost of Tsushima. All of which will be backwards compatible of course.
But they need to engage properly starting now. Internet trolls already slamming their twitter page for not turning up at e3, and lots of people being swayed by microsofts offerings. Particularly around game pass.
Game pass elite (gamepass and xbox gold combined) is what people have been calling sony to do with plus and ps now for ages. Very clever
One of the worst I can remember. We saw no videogames...only cg trailers (and most of them bad).
Honestly was expecting much much more.
Must say, Sony completely stole their thunder for the next gen announcement. Everything from noteworthy features to buzzwords, we already expected all of that for their announcement. Sony seems to be playing a rather interesting game.
@Ryall I like hitman games better.so I'm glad that io interactive said no to them or all the rumors.word up son
@BAMozzy VERY disapointed in Ninja Theory's next game. Not something i would have played for sure.
It was decent. Cyberpunk 2077 was the highlight for me.
Surprised Control wasnt shown given Microsofts relationship with Remedy. Would have been a great opportunity to sprinkle in more gameplay footage too!
@Rob_230 so their first major new exclusive is an online game?
That was fine. Very little gameplay and Scarlett seems identical to PS5.
Guess its on Nintendo to deliver good gameplay showings this year.
Again.
@jdv95 Ninja Theory's? Yep. Looks a little like 4 v 4 overwatch. It just didnt strike a chord with me at all. For me enslaved is by far their best work (yet to play DmC), and i didnt like Hellblade. But their strength is in single player titles rather than garish online games. IMO
It was alright I suppose. Pretty disappointed that they didn’t bother showing gameplay for a lot of what they showed off, but the reveals were still exciting.
@stua12t But why trying so hard with the best console why not go for the games. You think i had a PS4 for the power. 😆
@Rob_230 I wouldn't say I was very disappointed - it seems its a game built to a fad.
multi-player - check
uniquely different characters - check
All it needs is a battle royale mode and it would tick all the boxes...
@Rob_230 wow you would think that after hellblade's success MS would want a SP story driven exclusive from that studio.
i guess they still don't get the memo about why sony exclusives are so good?
@Rob_230 Are you serious one of the best story focused studio's and they make a
4 VS 4 game? 🤯
It was only ok. So little gameplay shown. Missed opportunity from Microsoft. Halo looked a bit dodgy, I'd be a bit concerned if that was either the last big hope for XBO or launching with NextBox.
@MrGawain But these Firstparty studio are the reason i buy a PS4 every time though. Still salty i will never play Heavenly Sword 2 Nariko is one of my favorite characters liked her better then Kratos. 😆
Ok so I'm one of the few that enjoyed it then?John Wick was there for a start,he made it all worth it!And seeing as I'm one of the guys not too hyped about Cyberpunk 2077 well after seeing that trailer and knowing Reeves is in it im now more interested.
Tales of Arise looks great..haven't tried Berseria cuz the last few have been naff but this looks like it could be special.
Dying Light 2 looks ace and will be a day one.First game was awesome.
Hate Halo so new trailer doesn't bother me but was that supposed to be next gen graphics?looked the same as current gen..
Id LOVE to have the Ori games on Ps4 though..
@Enuo
I watched that bit again and Phil says:
'This is project Scarlet ; the most powerful and highest performing console we have ever designed.'
It's already been said a thousand times, but Microsoft botched its chance to really stick the boot in while Sony was away. The lack of gameplay footage for most of its upcoming games doesn't exactly inspire confidence, does it?
It had a lot of games on show, and a good few of them looked really interesting, but when Keanu Reeves standing on stage repeating the word "CYBERPUNK" is the main highlight, something's amiss.
If I’m Sony and MS just showed what they have in store for the next few years, I’m not concerned.
Tim Shafer you sell out! Doesn't that go against the initial idea of double fine? Just look at ninja theory! They made fantastic, original, story driven games and now they're making a PvP borefest ala overwatch, fortnite and all the other less successful ones. Total sell outs!
I liked the show certainly better than the last few offerings. Keanu Reeves being in Cyberpunk is awesome, Ori is a great looking game and one that I'm gutted isn't on Playstation, Double Fine signing up with Microsoft is a massive win for me personally & Blair Witch was a surprise thought it was another Outlast at first
@jdv95 @Flaming_Kaiser Studios say that Sony gives them a lot of independence to make the projects they want to make - make a game that you have a passion for. It makes me wonder, does Ninja Theory really have a passion to make a 4 v 4 multiplayer game, or did MS dictate that this was their project? I’m guessing the latter.
Its a meh for me, I mean its great that I have a lot to look forward to as ps4 user but their exclusive is still lacking. I understand more why sony leaves E3, state of play videos is more interesting since it can pop-up anytime.
I enjoyed their show, sure it could have been stronger, but it's the end of a generation, they were never going to announce a load of X1 exclusives at this late stage in its life, next year is when we can truly judge whether their first-party content has improved (if they have any sense they'll reveal a proper Banjo 4 for it to tempt Sony and Nintendo fans a little).
Regarding Ninja Theory, they stated their new game has been in development for a few years so you can't really blame Microsoft for that one, if their next game is multi-player focused, then that's a different story
Gameplay? Plenty of games but why are they not showing actual gameplay for the big ones? Instead just showing far too many cinematic trailers. Overall it was ok
I thought the flight sim looked pretty great.
It reminded me of a lot of the late-360 era MS pressers and a few of Sony's early ones from this gen (before the first party content began rolling in consistently). Great blockbuster third party stuff and some neat indies but lacking on the big-time exclusives.
Still, there were a couple things that got me interested. I love Gears 4 so Gears 5 is high on my most-wanted list and I like the messaging behind Project Scarlett and the fact we have a target for the release window and Halo will be launching with it. Now just have to hope 343 can finally deliver a Halo game that lives up to the franchise's legacy.
The other thing I liked is that there was a bit more Japanese content than usual. The 360 actually had good Japanese support and it's a coincidence that that was MS' best selling home console. I know the cool thing to do these days is hate on Japanese devs because 'woke' California PlayStation HQ clearly hates Japan, but many of the best games and talent still resides there and MS needs to take it more seriously next-gen.
Pretty much exactly as I predicted. It was a decent conference that had exactly the same issues that every Microsoft conference over the last few years has had, exacerbated by the elevated (and unrealistic) hype going into it due to a) new hardware talk, and b) Sony being a no-show.
It was pretty good, but a little too long. Lots of games, but short on exclusives. It was as much a great ad for PlayStation as it was for Xbox.
The Scarlett reveal fell flat since they basically just came out and point for point listed everything Cerny had already said about PS5. XCloud fell flat because we've already seen PS Now and Stadia and this offered nothing new. Halo and Gears should have been an event but they were both - especially Gears - shown off poorly.
When the major highlight of your conference is Keanu Reeves showing up, you know it wasn't a home run.
@Th3solution Ninja Theory clearly said that it is a game they have been working on for years so MS cant be held responsible for what is (in my opinion anyway) a bad choice of direction.
Loved the first hour. Final 35 minutes or so really lost a lot of momentum, especially when they started talking about the Scarlett. Solid conference overall. Leagues ahead of the wet far Bethesda spewed.
I really wanted a reason to want an Xbox. They haven't given me one to be honest.
@3MonthBeef @MrGawain - sony's had a streaming service for 5+ years - PS Now!. it's got way more games than stadia will have at launch. it makes more money than all of the other (current) subscription services put together. it's true it doesn't tend to have new PS4 games when they're launched, but i suspect that may change with PS5.
@leucocyte Ive got a feeling we're going to see some big news about PS Now later this year.. with a likely move to have big first party games showing up from this gen.
@Nifty Oh, okay - I didn’t catch that. It’s too bad because I loved Heavenly Sword, Enslaved, and I am planning to play Hellblade. Maybe if NT have a real desire to make this kind of game it could turn out okay. [shrug]
I don't think the problem was so much with MS as it was with YouTubers, Websites hyping it up as having games like Fable and so on. So when they had a decent show it came off worse than it actually was.
But given that said, they did drop the ball big time. With Sony not being there they should of had a grand slam. Instead they stumbled. The show was so boring.
The new Xbox elite controller looks amazing if only it would work with playstation. I love the placement of the sticks and triggers and grip and control more than playstion controllers.
@Th3solution I have no idea thats something they van only answer but in baffled you totally ignore the strenghts of such a talented storydriven team.
