God of War is a smash hit of the highest magnitude. Following on from the title’s impressive launch, where it sold 3.1 million units in just three days, PlayStation chief John Kodera has revealed that its numbers have now surpassed five million units in its first month on sale. To put this into perspective, it’s already more or less matched God of War III's lifetime total, which was the franchise’s commercial high-point previously. Similarly, it took Horizon: Zero Dawn a year to achieve sales in the region of 7.6 million.
It’s clear that the success of the PlayStation 4 is helping Sony’s exclusives this generation. While the company has set the quality bar extremely high, the platform holder’s titles never took off quite like this on the PlayStation 3, but its brands are really becoming juggernauts now. Next up is Spider-Man, which is almost certain to do well. And a little further afar, would anyone really bet against The Last of Us: Part II matching these numbers – or perhaps even surpassing them?

Insane numbers! Word up, son!
The most amazing thing about God of War's success is that I wasn't feeling the insane groundswell of hype until that round of previews went live about two months prior to launch.
From there, though, Sony just did everything right in terms of the promotion of this game. They've been very good this generation; Horizon was a textbook launch, too.

I'm glad Sony's faith in it's exclusives is paying off. These games aren't cheap to make, so it's great to see them do so well.

Hopefully he continues to carry on Sony's commitment to high budget single player narrative campaigns.

@get2sammyb Sony potentially have 4 or 5 "flagship" IPs now. The kind of games where everyone knows what those games are and are guaranteed system sellers: Last of Us, Uncharted, Horizon , God of War and Gran Turismo. And that's before Spiderman, Ghost of Tushsima and Death Stranding have a chance of establishing itself.

I got mine for $48, 20% less than "full price", w/ Amazon Prime. (I traded it in for $39 at Gamestop, but that's another story.)
And I bring this up not just to be funny, though w/ me that's always part of it, but b/c in case you haven't heard Best Buy is discontinuing it's Gamers Club Unlocked promotion which probably a lot of people used to buy this game for $48 as well. So if BB GCU goes away, and Amazon follows suit and discontinues the Prime discount, new game sales could take a small hit as more people wait for sales and forgo day 1 purchases.
I do know what you were getting at, these aren't BF $20 sales, and there will probably be a bunch of those this year, but it will be interesting to see if all of the day 1 discounts go away if day 1 sales drop off. Won't hurt FPS and sports games, Day 1 or don't bother with them, but some single player games could suffer. I only bought GoW day 1 b/c of that discount, otherwise I would have waited for BF.

Kratos has been one of the PlayStation icons (for better or worse depending on how you view the character) since the PS2 days. It's great that this series has bounced back as strongly as it had and I look forward to more GoW games in the future.

I was one of those concerned. Funny thing is, when playing the game I never once thought 'this isn't God of War.' The only two things missing were a mini-game (you know the one) and a jump button to do the air combos. But, especially after acquiring a very specific item, the game felt very much GoW. Even without the air attack you could still bounce the enemies into the air and do the crazy juggle combos. This game is so good. I was wowed again the same way I was way back in 2005 playing the first game in my college dorm as my buddies looked on. I always like time to let things sink in but I feel pretty confident saying God of War is my favorite PS4 game now and the only one I see having a chance to top it is The Last of Us Part II. Of course the PS4 has been on a crazy roll since 2016 and I've made similar statements about a few other games.

Nice one GoW/Santa Monica! Congrats on the revival of the franchise and yay another top selling blockbuster single player story driven campaign!! I think I'm starting to fit these blockbuster games in the same category as my fave movies. Watch a couple of times/play a couple of times - but wow what a frikkin amazing time, every moment is delicious and compelling til the very end.

I would like to know if you start the story of god of war on a different difficulty will you lose your progress and new armor and stuff
@rjejr In my defence I did take that into account! I myself 'only' paid £42 for it, but I imagine the digital sales (~30-40% full price) and the more expensive collectors and special editions are going to no push the average consumer spend up to that full price £50/$60 price tag.
Bottom line...that's a very healthy bottom line for just a month of sales .

Yeah, those certainly add up. I think it's funny how everybody keeps talking about how games are going all digital meanwhile we're all buying $100+ collectors editions with all the swag. I'd probably buy even more special editions than I do but it bothers me when they charge $90 for a $60 game but then that $90 doesn't even include the $30 season pass, so it will cost $120 to get the entire thing. Not all games do that, but I won't buy those that do out of principal. On the flip side I bought GoW day 1 b/c it didn't have a season pass so I was showing my appreciation for a $60 game.
My kids and I will be watching E3 intently, we're wondering if Ntineod will jump the shark w/ SSB and launch the game for $60 w/ 24 characters and you have to buy a season pass to get the rest. That seems to be the industry norm these days for 2D fighters and the Wii U/3DS version had about $100 worth of DLC. No season pass though, savings were hard to come by. And they never offered a "complete" version either. Game is still $60 too, 3.5 years later and it never became a Select. Even w/ the $600 in amiibo to go along with it. So we'll be watching very closely to see how this version, or new game, plays out.
