Remember when CD Projekt Red added in a big hulking beastie to the first area of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in order to punish players who were killing cows and selling their hides to make some quick cash? Well the Polish studio's at it again with the game's first expansion, Hearts of Stone.
If you've used any exploits to gather vast amounts of money over the course of your adventures, you'll be approached by a character named the Taxman. This rather prim and proper man will question Geralt about the Witcher's income, and will even refer to the various coin farming tricks that players have been discovering and using since the title launched back in May.
Apparently, if your questionable practices are found out, the Taxman will impose a fine and you'll have no choice but to pay up. If you've been a good little monster slayer, though, you'll actually be given a nice reward. The system works, we suppose.
The whole thing's another fantastic example of the developer's devotion to detail and the understanding of its fans. If you're still not sure what to make of all this, give WhatsMyGame's video a look and let us know if you're going to be coughing up for your crimes in the comments section below.

nooooooo!!! now I wish I didn't use the shell trick I only used it so I could buy all the gwent cards...
Are you guys going to review the Hearts of Stone expansion? I'm loving it so far.
Just my opinion, but I reckon GTA V and the Witcher 3 have the most amazing open worlds created in a game to date.
I never seen a company that care so much about their game, nor atlus, nor Sony, nor Naughty Dog, and even Nintendo. And this is incredible, thanks a lot for one the best games of my life (Witcher 1 and 2 are amazing but 3 is on another level) and for your dedication! I'll buy every single game from CD Projekt Red!
Hearts of Stone is amazing. I can't believe it was less then $10.
I haven't bought it yet because I'm still giving it a rest and playing other releases, but I'll be excited for it when both expansions come out.
This though...just brilliant.
@sub12 Yep, we're working on a review right now. Will hopefully have it published over the weekend.
Well that's crummy, because I used the shell exploit. There goes my stack of cash.
I didn't use any exploit so it's about time the taxman did something for me
so it looks like people can just answer untruthfully despite using the exploits??? i didnt use any but think its pretty funny if those who did HAVE get taxed. kind of hope that IS the case. im evily good lol
I'm still only on level 16 on the main game, really liking this game but the noise my Playstation makes when playing it is so head wrecking I have too turn it off after about a half hour.
Hahaaaa I like it just wish it was harsher and people lost whatever they bought as well, maybe people would think twice in the future. Tis a start tho. Aww they can just lie and it won't work, what's the point in that...
So that video link had a pre-video ad for me of... The Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone. Really, Youtube? Sigh.
@Frank90 why did you separate naughty dog and Sony ? Sorry, just seemed weird to me.
I actually think this is a crap thing to do.
To enjoy Hearts of Stone fully youll need to upgrade the Runewright, which costs an insanely high amount of gold.
If you recieved a modest sum for your work in game, which you dont, no one would need to use those tricks to begin with.
I think on average you earn 400-600 gold per quest, so thats 20 at least, without including repair costs, armour or sword crafting costs etc.
This is essentially punishing you for killing animals placed in the game and using a method which actually DOES NOT require anything other than game mechanics.
I don't play the Witcher, but I feel like this is a violation of players. Literally punishing players to make up for your bad game design is a terrible idea. Unless there's a way to opt out, they've just overstepped their bounds here.
Lads, let's be honest, you make plenty of money in The Witcher 3 to begin with. I've got about 50,000 gold or something - you're all mental.
Besides this guy does apparently only take away 1000 gold, you know.
Just sell off any unwanted armour/ weapons. I had no problem upgrading the Runewright that way. It took some time but was worth it in the end.
I finished Hearts of Stone yesterday and thought it was outstanding.
I'll just wait and maybe rent the complete goty edition. No tax man gonna steal my gold, I'll plough him up.
@ShogunRok Really?
Ive only just broke 10k for the first time, and had the game since launch.
What with upgrading armour and weapons, crafting new armour and weapons etc.
Dismantling items for said crafting also costs you with no return.
And even those upgrades took a long time to get the cash for.
