Oh dear, this is what you get for slaughtering innocent herbivores. An exploit in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt that was used by many players in order to rack up some serious dosh, you could repeatedly kill a respawning group of cattle and sell their hides during your time in an early area of the game. However, with the title's latest update, developer CD Projekt Red has most likely put an end to such morally corrupt escapades.
Where the cows once grazed, there's now a big, angry chort waiting for unsuspecting adventurers. The beast's extremely high level, meaning that you'll either need some impressive skill, or some incredible luck to bring it down playing as a lower level Geralt.
To be honest, we love fixes like this, and we'd really like to know how many people this particular tweak has already caught out. Have you been making use of naughty exploits? Is your sleep filled with guilt-ridden bovine-based nightmares? Flee into the comments section below.
[Update] Push Square user milerno91 actually managed to capture footage of the monster, which we've now embedded so that you can feel the fear for yourselves.

I love the cow boss! Made a little video the first time I tried to fight it...if anyone does watch, I apologise in advance at how poor my skills are. I was under levelled and wasn't sure what tactic to take with it!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ud9dmS5bJT4
I've seen pictures where this is level 105 but they've only been level 27 for me. I personally didn't use the exploit but wanted to fight this guy.
When you kill him, another spawns instantly so if you are a high level you could technically just keep killing this and getting 100 orens per kills
I don't know why people are using exploits to get money in this game; I'm level 20 and I've got 22,000+ gold whilst at the same time buying/crafting every item that's even 1 point stronger than my current equipment. It seems playing the game and selling what you find is the best option!
Certainly saves the hours of wasted time punching cows anyway
@milero91 Haha, it's brilliant! Would you mind if we attached your video to the article?
Yeah I'm just looting and selling as I play, built up a fair amount of coin. Dunno why people are grinding for money like this.
@ShogunRok Not at all! I should have recorded it the second time it came really once I'd figured out it's move pattern! But yes, feel free
@benrawr I've never understood it either, NEVER have I not had enough money. I've only got about 17,000 and I'm in act 2 now and still haven't felt the need to really spend it.
I've never bought armour or weapons and instead opted to craft as it's so much cheaper.
I don't like fixes like this. It is really sad when game world is connected to youtube, twitch, internet forums and setera. I can understand bug and glitch fixes, but cheese fixes make me sad, very sad. It feels like big brother watches over you =(
@milero91 I've updated the article with it - thanks very much!
As Im clearly thick, how exactly is killing the cows different to ANY other animal or monster and selling its hide?
And I also dont see how buying an item from one merchant and selling it to another regards the shells is an exploit, how is that different than buying ANY other item?
This awesome...
@ToOGoodOfAPlaya I call this kind of activities from developers - bungie syndrome =). I stopped playing Destiny because of it.
@Gemuarto But you dont HAVE to do this, its using in game mechanics which are there regardless of whether you choose to kill the same group of enemies or not.
Destiny forces you to repeat the exact same process due to very little content.
And Im still not sure how killing a load of cows is different to killing a load of any other animal and selling its hide.
EDIT: I see now you were referring to the patching.
Oh that's awesome. Those skills werent that bad @milero91
It's simple, now killing a lot of cows causes crazy monsters to come out and hunt you. Massive cow slaughtering is not Witcher work, fighting the monsters that cow slaughtering brings, is.
I for one am glad they're forcing idle players into a challenge.
@BertoFlyingFox haha I've only been gaming since December really so certainly room for improvement, I am usually better than this video shows...but then I would say that!
I love slaying monsters, so when I heard about this I went straight to White Orchard and got to work!
@milero91 Your skills are really pretty bad. You need to use circle to escape simple attacks and x for rush attacks =). When fight with Fiend and Chort. X has too long starting frames to escape simple attacks of those two... Maybe same goes for gigants, but I'm not sure.
How much xp from those those? Might farm them for that haha
@Gemuarto Thanks, although I've stated I wasn't sure what attacks he was doing as it's the first time I faced him. Second time was fine. I very rarely use X but was trying to figure out his move pattern. Playing on Death March so I assume my skills are perfectly acceptable usually
@ToOGoodOfAPlaya Yeah, I was talking about cheesing fixes. It is sad when developers watch youtube and fix some funny ways of playing. Really looks like Big Brother complex to me =).
@BertoFlyingFox Me too, Im glad they are forcing players to play a specific way, regardless of whether they want too.
A bit like how Bloodborne forced me to have to kill different enemies for blood echoes…oh wait, no it didnt…
@milero91 This game hardest difficulty is easy, actually =). In my opinion. I really were bored to death(now I understand why it's called death march) in second half of the game, because there were no challenge at all. I kill monster in hardest contract with 6 attacks T___T.... On hardest difficulty. And he was 5 levels above me. And you did pretty good =). I was just joking =(....
@Gemuarto Yeah I'm about 2 hours from the end now and it feels a little too easy but earlier on I had some difficulty...I always find one and one so much easier than for example a pack of bloody drowners! On my second playthrough I'm going to try and create a video for each monster
I have heard it's not that hard compared to other games...I suppose I'll get a real test when I eventually get Bloodborne or Dark Souls!
@toogoodofaplaya They're forcing you to do that because killing cows for money is lame, very easy to comprehend.
And Bloodborne is a bad example, considering there was an exploit for gaining free blood echoes and it was completely patched out.
I've been looking for a challenge, I'll do this just to challenge it haha.
@BertoFlyingFox Well, no it isnt a bad example.
That was an exploit that should never have been possible and required you to create new characters and use a specific item.
Killing cows is a game mechanic, not an exploit as it was fully intended, and thus should be possible.
And like you said, The More You Know…
I love the way that you hear villagers screaming before you actually see it. I love this game.
Ok this is now a higher level farming spot. Over 50 xp a kill at level 31 and i kill them in 3 swings. Then farm the mutagens lol
Ok exploit doesnt last long thank goodness. 72xp until you hit level 33 then only 2xp after that
But chort hides are worth 324 each compared to the cows 40 something
@Gemuarto
I agree with the difficulty should of been harder, in fact they made a big mistake by not having them level-up as you do, like in the Souls games.
Hey as long as it isn't affecting anyone else as it's single player what does it matter if peoople find a way to work the system. Not everyone has loads of time to dedicate to a game like this but still want to enjoy it, so if something small like this gives you a little boost then why spoil other's fun?
