@Korra Yeah he really didn't fit the role at all. Good thing they went back to the original cast in the next movie.
Speaking of which, I just got done watching the next movie Fast & Furious (2009). After watching it, I understand now why they chose this name as it's basically a "reboot" of the series with the original cast. The theme of street racing is now gone and instead, the focus is on the two protagonists Dom and Brian doing their own thing. I'm guessing this is how the rest of the movies are going to be like, which is nice as the later movies look very promising. Really looking forward to watching Fast Five next.
But yeah, this movie was great and it was nice seeing the old cast again.
@LN78 "People Who Buy Movies They Don't Like For Silly Reasons Anonymous". I like it; has a nice ring to it
@LtSarge@Korra F&F is another franchise I absolutely adore! Especially as they get crazier and more and more over the top in each new instalment I think Fast Five might be one of my favourites, but I love them all
@FuriousMachine Speaking of Fast Five, I just finished watching that movie. And it's also my favourite now! The amount of likeable characters and the departure from street racing to more "action racing", it's just great. And that ending! I was laughing all the way through as it was absolutely ridiculous how two cars were dragging a giant safe through an entire city. Like you said, it's absolutely crazy and I love it. This along with John Wick are my two favourite movie franchises now. Just one excellent movie after the other, it's great. I genuinely cannot wait to watch the next movies.
@LtSarge That one is the peak of Fast and the Furious, the action series. I say that since it was obviously originally about street racing, but I did not mind what they did with Fast Five and it's definitely the best of the bunch from #5 on (which is when they solely became action movies).
Oddly enough, your spoiler is far more realistic than some of the things they've done in the last couple of movies.

@Korra@KilloWertz Yeah, I did get the feeling while watching Fast Five that that's where they're heading with the rest of the movies as it's only natural to improve upon the previous ones by making even crazier sequences. I actually like that as it shows that the movie makers weren't afraid of evolving the franchise instead of just making movies about street racing over and over again. Not to mention that they clearly showed in Fast Five that Dom and Brian are exceptional drivers and no one can match up to them. So what's the point of having more street races. I mean, they didn't even show the part in Fast Five where they were going to have a street race, lol.
Well, my subscription of SkyShowtime ran out yesterday, which means no more Fast & Furious for some time. Instead, I've subscribed to HBO Max as it's been a long time since I had that service. Decided to continue watching the DCEU movies and the next one on my list was Shazam. I knew nothing about this character going in and I was pleasantly surprised. It was a fantastic movie! It's kinda like the Thor/Guardians of the Galaxy of the DCEU in terms of being more comical than serious. Also, Zachary Levi is an amazing actor. Really enjoyed his acting.
All in all, I really enjoyed this movie and it was a breath of fresh air compared to the previous DCEU movies.
@LtSarge@Korra is kind of right, but that was also a warning on the series for eventually going so far you just have to accept that a lot of the action scenes are going to be completely impossible. The reviews don't exactly show it, but a true low point of the series imo is The Fate of the Furious. It's the only one I didn't like much at all, with one particular escape sequence being so ridiculously impossible it really hurt the movie for me. There's leaving logic behind and then there's just straight stupidity, and that scene hit the latter unfortunately. Your mileage may vary, and I did like the two movies after that, so it's not like the series completely lost it's way with that movie.
At this point, they might as well film a whole Fast & Furious movie in space. We never did get Machete in Space or more than just a scene in this series in space (I forget which of the F&F movies).
Despite somebody knocking Shazam in this thread earlier, I highly enjoyed the first one as well. The second one isn't as good, with Shazam being one of the DCEU's best (obviously behind Wonder Woman), but I still enjoyed it for what it was and the fact that I knew it would be Zachary Levi's last movie as the character with them rebooting and/or scrapping everything now.

Argyle (Cinema) - I've always thought it was hard for a film to pull off both being your comedy as well as your legitimate action thriller (and it's a trap a lot of films fall into these days, especially the comic book stuff), and Argyle simply can't quite pull it off. I actually liked it at the outset and thought it was striking the balance well enough, but by the climax all the pretext was gone & it went full silly with some absurdly goofy action set pieces & a couple of completely contrived "saves" for our heroes after we've already had half a dozen twists and the writers seemed to stop caring explaining them. Sam Rockwell was a pretty enjoyable presence throughout, however you'll be disappointed if you were looking forward to Henry Cavill, John Cena, or a couple of the others who appeared in the marketing, as many of them only have 5 to maybe 20 minutes of screentime at most. Also has the now standard "Hey! We're setting up a cross franchise cinematic universe" moment during the mid credits that people are starting to tire of, tying it into Kingsmen.
A Dog's Journey (Amazon Prime) - A dog's soul is reincarnated through various lives (as different dogs) in order to watch over & protect the granddaughter of it's first owner as she grows through life. A movie like this has a lot of cheap emotional twists, but darn if they don't work. You'll be crying like a baby.
the Patriot (Blu-Ray) - Don't think I've actually sat down to watch the whole thing before (& this was the nearly 3 hour extended cut to boot), but it was absolutely fantastic. Of course as historical fiction it's not historically accurate (& it doesn't seem to claim to be), but it's a gripping example of a Hollywood epic with a great sense of scale, action, and a lot of heart. Really enjoyed this one.

I liked The Marvels a lot. Other than the musical bit but then I totally get the joke, it’s just not my vibe and sort of interrupted the flow of the movie. I binged Ms Marvel before that and loved it, I can appreciate the changed powers even if I prefer her comics origin.
@CJD87@Korra Yeah we all have our guilty pleasures, films to watch when you can switch your brain off. The Fast and Furious movies are probably mine.
You still have find some kind of entertainment in what you are watching though, and I found Monster Hunter really dull. I'm not a fan of the video games, so that probably has some bearing on things.
In terms of video games movies, I've always had a soft spot for Prince Persia, even though I appreciate that it is not a great film.
Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.
Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.
As far as video game movies, of course they’ve gotten better lately with the likes of Gran Turismo and Uncharted (and presumably Sonic and Mario, but I’ve yet to see those). But a movie that I really liked recently was Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. It’s not truly a video game movie, per se, but it is definitely video game adjacent with Baldur’s Gate and it’s just an immensely entertaining film even besides its ‘geek culture’ relations.

@nessisonett Agreed, 100%. I just watched it again after having seen it in IMAX last year and I think it's a fun little movie. Nothing earthshattering, just a good time, which seems to me was just what they were aiming for. Worried that the poor box office teaches Marvel and Disney all the wrong lessons, though (of course, I don't really know what "the right lessons" are when it comes down to pure cash from tickets; that may very well be "focus on dour and grounded angsty white males", but I sure as hell hope not... Hollywood is still not lacking in that department)
@Th3solution DnD was such a good time at the cinema last year, but again, box office was lacking. I loved that it was colorful and playful and fun as I feel fantasy has been very dour and dark since GoT took the world by storm. I'd like more of both. I also couldn't agree more RE: Edge of Tomorrow
