Looks like my mum’s being made redundant. 10 years at Paperchase and it’s gone under today with Tesco buying up the IP but not the shops. High streets are pretty much dead throughout the country though, there’s more units than businesses to fill them.

@LN78 I think she’d prefer that to call centre work to be honest, she’s done both but hospitality’s slightly more tolerable. Cheers for the kind words though, same to @RogerRoger.

@nessisonett Redundancy is the worst as it’s so out of your hands but there is certainly plenty of work out there at the moment.

I’m really lucky that the town I live in has a really good high street which is mostly independent shops. I have no idea how such a small town manages to sustain having three butchers within 100m of each other though

@Thrillho That’s a lot of butchers for a small town! I wish we still had local businesses like that near me, the fishmongers and the butchers and such all closed down a few years back, with Costa opening up and pushing out the local cafes too. So we basically have a Costa and then bookies as far as the eye can see 😂

Tough break for your mum though. Hope she finds something soon. I took a couple of months off from the grind when I got made redundant years ago.

@nessisonett what, no fried chicken shop between the bookies, Costa, and BHF shop?

But ours is really good. Loads of decent places for food and some great bars, plus a fantastic record shop that puts gigs on too. We even had Damon Albarn playing in the church around the corner from me recently!

@LN78 There are three hairdressers in the little high street where I live, all next to each other. There is also a Post Office and a Co-op!

@nessisonett Ha, we’re a town though thank you. It’s got a reputation for being quite artsy/bohemian so I think a Costa or Starbucks would be run out of town.

The locals here were anti 5G before it was popular but thankfully it didn’t extend to noticeable anti Covid mentality outside of a small group.
