ApostateMage

I'm currently playing Skyrim which has fantastic music.

I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for the music in Streets Of Rage (especially stage 5) and of course, OutRun.

I pretty much like any song from the massive amount of World of Warcraft music, I still listen to the soundtracks and various mixes despite no longer playing. I also love music by Jeremy Soule - I'm not just talking Elder Scrolls music here, the Dawn of War soundtracks are amazing! Darkest Dungeon has awesome music too, especially during battles.

@ApostateMage OutRun FTW.

@Kidfried A perfect example would actually be when I finished Persona 3 recently. Persona has always had good music, and this had great use of it's soundtrack. During the final month of the game, it's clear how big the stakes are now, and the overworld music changes to reflect that.

The music in the dorm goes from this:

To this:

The city music changes from this:

To this gorgeous piece:

That piece in particular is a favorite, since it gives me a feeling of dread and sadness, yet makes me feel there's something worth protecting.

This culminates with the ending song:

I'm not fluent in Japanese, which says alot about emotional the song is. When it plays during credits and ends with that last shot.........please excuse me. (sobs)

The Mas Effect Trilogy OST is positively astounding. Some really great gems in there. More recently, I really liked Fortune's theme in MGS2. Easily the most memorable piece of music in that franchise I've heard so far.

@Kidfried Way, way too many tracks to list in response to your question. I will say that many of the tracks from the latter half of Metal Gear Solid 4, as well as anything connected with the romance subplot in Mass Effect 3 (or the final cutscene of the Citadel DLC, come to think of it), is like turning on a tap for my tears. Why I keep them around in my general playlists is anybody's guess!

Since you highlighted Mario, though, I'll balance out with a random moment from a Sonic game which always, specifically thanks to the cheesy music, gets me all misty-eyed.

Music really makes a HUGE impact on a game for me...all of my top favorite games also have soundtracks I can listen to by themselves (Mass Effect, Final Fantasy XIII, Castlevania, etc). However, haven't played anything lately that's really grabbed my attention. Any RECENT, maybe lesser-known games anyone's played that are chock full of good tracks?

LawBreakers was the last game I played that had an incredible score, IMHO. Stuff from Mick Gordon, Jack Wall, etc. Here's my favorite track:

Too bad the game's been shutdown...one of the best experiences I've ever had! R.I.P.

Make it a great day!

I thought Jesper Kyd's soundtrack for Assassin's Creed II and Brotherhood was outstanding.

On the flip side, I bloody wish Yakuza 0 had more than that one same song that plays over the back of all the text conversations that go on.

Surviving Mars has a pretty ace soundtrack though that fits the game perfectly. There's even multiple "radio stations" but the default one is so good I can't bring myself to change it.

@Wearl Gonna be boring and say Red Dead. The soundtrack lingers in the background, waiting for its moment to punch you in the gut. And the era-specific show tunes are glorious.

Good job, Parappa. You can go on to the next stage now.

@Wearl Shadow of the Colossus. Simply majestic. I like it when soundtracks are not afraid to keep things simple or not have any music playing. Cos sometimes I find that can be more effective than having a full orchestra behind you.

Well, I heared some samples and it's amazing, so...

@JohnnyShoulder
So the music there is minimalistic? Do you have an favourite soundtrack released this year?

@Wearl The remaster of Shadow of the Colossus was released this year, not played many games released this year and that was the stand out soundtrack for me.

I wouldn't class it as minimalistic, no. While the game has an extensive orchestral soundtrack, the music is only heard during cut scenes and colossus encounters, while time spent at the Shrine of Worship and traversing the landscape is silent save for the sounds made by the protagonist, his horse and their surroundings. The open nature of the game world and lack of life, coupled with this limited use of music, aids in establishing an atmosphere of solitude.

@JohnnyShoulder
Oh yes, this is true art when the world can speak for itself without musical accompanient. I had this in "Journey". Sometimes I just sat there (in the game) and felt pure calmness.

Another interesting question to all: What was your first Soundtrack? I mean when did you start to listen to the game's music outside the game respectively started buying it?
I came into that with Deus Ex: Human Revolution. When I watched a trailer I was fascinated by the music, but hadn't plans to buy the game but the music. And the music brought me into the series, which became my absolute favourite. So, Deus Ex: Human Revolution was my first Soundtrack CD and the series' music is also my absolute favourite And from there I started to listen more to soundtracks.

Before that I was also thrilled of some games' music but always kept them ingame.

@Wearl I haven't played too many new games this year, so my soundtrack choices will be a little limited, but I generally adore all music in all games I play, so that'd be Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Hitman 2 and LEGO DC Super-Villains (Spyro's music is okay and I'll whistle along whilst playing, but it's also very forgettable, to the point where I couldn't hum you anything off the top of my head).

As for your follow-up question, I got into gaming via my love of movies, and so I almost exclusively listened to movie soundtracks before I got my first gaming soundtrack CD through the post. Before that, I'd found a few tracks from things like Bond games online, and had figured out that the PSone discs of Rainbow Six, Star Wars: Demolition, Time Crisis and Tomb Raider II acted like audio CDs for the in-game music if you popped them in a CD player, so I guess maybe they're my firsts because I'd stay awake at night with my Walkman on my lap listening to them.

First one I actually purchased as an album, though, was Jesper Kyd's soundtrack to Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, closely followed by the PSone Bond game Tomorrow Never Dies (might've even gotten them together). I've also got the CDs for most of the Metal Gear Solid games, as well as Vanquish, the second and third Uncharted games, Ace Combat: Assault Horizon, the older Medal of Honour games and a handful of Sonic the Hedgehog titles.

Hey guys,
just in case you didn't notice, one of the big game music distributer "Sumthing Else Music Works" shut down its gates and that means all soundtracks distributed through them were taken down on all plattforms, if the publishers didn't manage to re-release their soundtracks.

Deus Ex composer Michael McCann wrote a statement about that as people were asking around, why its music is gone.

Here is the statement:
"Hey all - DX:HR composer here. The distributor for the soundtrack (Sumthing Digital) shut down this month. They had been a distributor of countless game soundtracks over the years. Some game studios moved quickly to secure new distribution for their soundtracks prior to the shutdown. This allowed for a smooth transition and avoided any album deletions, and preserved playlists, user reviews, album & track embed links, etc. Unfortunately, studios that didn't secure new distribution by this month have had all their content deleted across most music platforms worldwide. Those deletions will work their way through the system the next week, so some may still have access.
Square Enix owns & controls all the Deus Ex music 100%, so it's entirely up to them if / when the soundtrack is re-released. If you're a fan of the music and want the music back on these platforms, you may want to message Square Enix on social media and give them some motivation. Eidos Montreal & official Deus Ex social media accounts might be a good places to message as well.
If it helps, the DX:HR soundtrack is still on my Soundcloud page here: https://soundcloud.com/michaelmccannmusic/sets/deus-ex-human-... and also on Youtube.
I have contacted a couple platforms (eg. Spotify, iTunes / Apple Music) already, to see if things like user playlists, user reviews, album embeds etc. can be preserved in the case the soundtrack is re-released. No guarantee on that yet, but I'm told it is unlikely.
As a side note, I'm not sure if this will also affect the DX:MD soundtrack. I had no involvement with that soundtrack, so not sure who distributes it. It still seems to be up on most platforms I checked today, but that could just be a delay as deletions work their way through the system. Not sure though.
Hopefully this sheds some light on what's going on. A lot of game soundtracks disappeared this week - hopefully these studios will move quickly to get it all back online!"
