@RogerRoger yo, that's a huge difference. They should have used these shots to showcase the remaster and maybe we wouldn't have so many "the original looked better to me" tweets

Looks like Disco Elysium’s patch is going live today (US time). Apparently ZA/UM were waiting on certifications over the weekend. It’s confirmed that it’ll fix the specific bug that’s affecting me so hey, there’s that. Must be a nightmare to review with so many patches releasing this quickly, fixing issues that would otherwise deserve a mention.

In a stroke of absolute serendipity, the gaming gods have blessed me with a PS5. Mercifully, Sony’s record-breaking new console has fallen into my lap. I don’t want to know if there were any illegal or immoral acts done to procure this for me, but my benefactor assured me no one died and no sentient life forms were permanently harmed in its acquisition. I’m just glad to have been gifted such a rarity but I feel like months of wasted time combing the internet stores must have earned me favor with the Universe, ...and like my grandad used to say, “Son, sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.”

So while I still maintain that these silly things are too hard to get your hands on, somehow I now am a proud owner of a PS5. One of the things I’m most excited about is not having to waste any more mental energy monitoring restock apps and online retailers. Good riddance to that.

I’ll mention just a few of my first-day impressions (and some questions mixed in for you PS5 veterans):
So far, it’s very quiet. However, I think I hear the controversial “whine”. Mine is a disc drive unit, and the disc drive is also surprisingly loud when I put in a disc, and I trust that this is normal. Hopefully I didn’t get a lemon, but when I put a disc in, the drive kicks in aggressively and the casing seems to rattle a fair bit. The discs seem to function just fine, however. But it’s actually louder than when my PS4 loads a disc.
> If anyone can confirm how loud loading their discs are, I’d appreciate it.

It’s currently in Rest Mode downloading a bunch of games I’ve been digitally hoarding in my library, preparing for this day. I decided to position it horizontally and I can hear the faint “whine” from 10 feet across the room. So while the chatter about PS5 being so quiet is accurate in some ways, I do think it’s a little misleading. ...Unless I have a defective unit, but we’ll see.

Speaking of — horizontal positioning is going to push my obsessive compulsion to the max. It’s strange shape coupled with the precarious placement on the stand make it impossible to tell of its actually level. Perhaps that’s why it’s whining? With the curved lines, it appears crooked no matter how you look at it. I wish there was a way to fasten the stand horizontally so you know it’s in place and stable.

The controller feels good, but also a bit odd. I can’t remember who ( @Kidfried I think?) made the comment that although the controller feels of better quality and more solid, it doesn’t “fit” in your hands quite as cozy as the old DS4. Like wearing new shoes versus the nice comfy worn-in pair, I believe was the analogy.
The d-pad? Yeah, kinda squishy, but it’s okay. Not as good as the DS4’s but more than serviceable.
Controller battery life seems to be surprisingly decent since I’ve yet to dip below max bars despite the thing rumbling, shaking, and gyrating constantly during Astrobot. Certainly leagues better than the first iteration of the DualShock 4.

> Anyone know if it’s okay to charge the controller with a phone charger? Don’t want to fry my controller, but just wondering.

The UI ... it’s just like you all described. It’s fine, but, eh... wish it was different and more intuitive.
The store runs exceedingly better on here versus PS4. Sure, the arrangement and organization of it is up for debate, but it’s much faster and responsive to hop around and browse content.

> And.. another quick question — I know it’s old news and I forgot to fully pay attention when it didn’t apply to me at the time... but I’m downloading the Control Ultimate Edition and it looks like it’s downloading a separate file for the Control PS4 version as well as the “Ultimate Ed” PS5 version? Are both files necessary for the game to work properly on PS5? I’m just going to let it all download and then I can go back and delete the PS4 file if I don’t need it. Do all the games with both versions do this? I definitely think the way that you have to navigate the PS4 versions and PS5 versions is cockamamie. I think I understand the process of clicking on the 3 little dots to flip back and forth between versions, but they really need clearer signposting of which version of the game you’re dealing with. How anyone in the programming department felt this was a logical way to handle backwards and forwards compatibility is beyond me. Fortunately, it’s probably an easy fix with a firmware update.

> And another stupid technical question — what’s the advantage of using the HDMI 2.1 cable. I have an HDMI cable I was using (I think it’s a Monster cable or some other supposed high-end cable I bought a couple years ago, I have no idea if it’s 2.1) but now I’m reading that I should use the cable included since it’s legitimately 2.1. Supposedly it makes 120 fps possible, or something like that? I don’t think any games support that frame rate yet, but I’m wondering how the cable affects the graphical fidelity too. Should I purchase a completely separate new second party 2.1 cable or stick with the one included? Does the cable really matter?

As for some early PS5 game impressions:
Astrobot — Awesome. What everyone else has said is true.
Maneater — Disappointing. I couldn’t get into the gameplay and it doesn’t even look graphically impressive and I can’t tell that it’s not a PS4 game. Skip.
Destruction All-Stars — Not a bad game. A nice attempt. Looks pretty nice and seems to run well. But gameplay-wise it’s just not my forte nor my predilection, so I’ll probably be skipping it too.
(This is a separate discussion entirely, but I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m just not a fan of games that rely upon floaty momentum physics based movement. Which, I realize at it’s base, all video game movement has some physics to it, but driving cars while trying to hit another moving object, like this or Rocket League for example, are frustrating to my brain. Similar things to be said about flying or swimming in games, especially when you’re trying to move your character to or through another independently moving object. I seem to prefer the character’s feet to be attached to the ground where movement is more predictable and to be able to push the stick forward to move and then cease pushing to stop. Hitting brakes in anticipation of what’s ahead, or creating an angle preemptively to be in the right place a few seconds later is a chore. I don’t like having to do quick trigonometry problems in my head while I’m playing a game. But I digress...)

Otherwise, after trying a variety of PS4 games they do seem to play perfectly fine. I haven’t noticed huge quality-of-life upgrades like load times or frame rate yet. The vaunted speed is apparent in things like the store navigation and in digital downloads. Definitely a huge improvement there, like I mentioned. Game launching is quick, but in some cases I’m slightly disappointed. As I’ve messed around with a bunch of PS4 games, including PS Plus Collection titles, some of them don’t seem to feel any differently than playing on my trusty 7 year old PS4.

Sorry for the wandering thoughts, but I got a little excited to be part of the elite club now.

@Th3solution I charge my controllers with a phone charger exclusively. It's an older Samsung one.

As for games that have a PS4 and a PS5 version - you don't need both. When you get a game like on the store and it goes to the download dialog, the default button is "download all" (as it is with any bundle on the store) - maybe that's what happened. It's something that could use a change in the UI for sure.

You need a HDMI 2.1 cable if you want 120 fps at 4K. If your TV isn't newer than that cable you were using, chances are it doesn't support that anyway. It's still not a common feature. And yeah, not many games support it anyway.

@Th3solution I've only read the first sentence of your post, gonna read the rest now. Just had to say congrats on our purchase!

@Th3solution Yes the disc drive being noisy is normal, I thought I had a lemon too. Also don't be alarmed if it randomly spins up even if you're not playing that disc game. Don't know why it happens, wish it didn't but it's nothing to be worried about. Completely agree about Destruction Allstars, "not a bad game, nice attempt". Really you haven't noticed any differences in loading? It was immediately apparent to me. As for PS4 upgrades checkout one of the posts like the one below. I would also do some further digging as I feel there are more than are listed here. Two games I can recommend to see differences are God of War and Ghost of Tsushima.

@Th3solution Yeah, the disc drive makes quite a bit of noise even when I’m not playing that game. It’s a bit odd. I’ll still take it over the Pro’s fan noise. Although the coil whine is also pretty annoying. I do like how cool the console runs though.

@Voltan @TraCuz- Thanks!

Regarding disc noise, I noticed that when I press down on the casing during the disc spinning that it quiets some, so part of the racket is simply that outer white casing being a little loose fitting. I suspect that placing it vertical might be quieter and if I can figure out how to aesthetically accomplish that with my set-up then I’ll convert to vertical.

As far as loading times, I’ve not tried but a few games in my opening hours so I’ll need to experiment more. I’ve heard about GoW and GoT being great showcases for PS5 performance upgrades on native PS4 games, but I platinum’d (and loved) both within the past year so have been planning to spend time with games I’ve not finished yet. Maybe I’ll load one or both just to muck around and feel the differences. I hear Days Gone is another good one to play on PS5 so I’ll get to that soon maybe.

@nessisonett Yeah, I’ve felt the back of the console and been pleased how cool it feels even after a couple hours. Do you have your vertical or horizontal?

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

nessisonett

@Th3solution Vertical but I have been hearing strange creaking noises from it occasionally so I think I might need to take a look at the stand.

@nessisonett You mean like creaking noises after you turn it off? I think that's normal, it's just the plastic parts "settling" due to temperature change. It seems to have mostly gone away after a few weeks of regular use for me.

@Arugula I mentioned it in the other thread, but I’m looking at Returnal as the possible tipping point for when it feel like my PS4 has been made expendable.

I've had my PS5 for like two weeks now and I really like it. What's weird is that the things that I've seen people complaining about most (the UI in general, cards, etc.) are things I've really liked and the things I've seen people celebrating (particularly the haptic feedback) I'm just not sold on at all.

@Voltan Sometimes when the console’s on too. It’s a bit odd but I just assumed I either have the stand on too tight or not enough.

@johncalmc Yeah same here! I think the UI is a bit different to the PS4 one and there are few things in different places, so people may be finding it a bit difficult to get used to.

@Th3solution Congrats! In regards to the disk drive, I can hear it kick into action when I first turn it on or insert a new disk, but I wouldn't say it is excessively loud or anything. But I wouldn't say what you are experiencing is not normal either as others have mentioned the same thing.

And yes you can charge the controller with your phone charger. I've been doing that since I first got my PS4 and not noticed any negative effects.
