It’s finally happened guys, it’s no longer smash X to run! It’s L3 like a lot of games. πŸ₯³

@BearsEatBeets Wait, for real?!? where was this shown?

Edit: Now R* can go back through all their games and change it to sprint to L3

I'm not sure how I feel. Some games when you do the click L3 thing it feels like you are either slowly walking or Usain Bolt halfway through a 100m final (death stranding has this currently) I hope there is at least some nuance. Some games you aren't meant to sprint full pelt all that much, GTA and Red Dead felt like they were designed correctly for what they were, and jogging speed was ample for most things.

There will probably be pressure based speeds based on how far you tilt the stick, at least. I just hope the difference between left stick full tilt and l3 click isn't about 20 mph πŸ˜…

I think they already long since changed RDR2, though, and I think I already tried their solutions and it was maybe already part of their games? They added an option for l3 click, or tap x or click x once, perhaps? I don't think I made it up in my memory πŸ˜…

Iguana aside, what are people's favourite captures so far?

I like these where they look so comfortable and contented (aww):

And this one where Jason definitely looks like such a "cuck" πŸ™„

(my eyes were rolling heavily at previous 'internet discourse' from the usual internet suspects. Being quiet or introverted in some situations is not weakness and does not make the game or character bad. If anything it will be something worth exploring narratively as grown ups. In fact, the manosphere parody side characters should be quite delicious in this game. Yes, side characters, insignificant npcs if you will πŸ˜›):

I also like the ones where you get a feel for how big the city will be, and the scale and draw distance of the game when you can see it from other areas, but I think playing it will be even more of a buzz for that especially as you drive into the city as it slowly gets more built up in a realistic way. The actual scale of everything seems epic and unlike most games we've seen. It may make the previous games feel a bit like model cities in comparison, but we shall see. Fingers still crossed for November πŸ˜… still reserving most of my hype just in case

@Ravix In the vid he mentions that how you move is very customizable in the settings. You can tweak how fast your default walk is and other bits I can't remember.
In RDR2 my Arthur Morgan only ever ran in gunfights and missions when needed. Otherwise he casually walked around the world.

If I had to pick a favourite capture I'd go with this one

@BearsEatBeets Yeah the underwater sections are going to be amazing! I remember just messing around in the submarine for hours in 5 even though there wasn't much to do down there, so here's hoping it's a lot more meaningful in 6.

I prefer a toggle to to run rather than mash, and not on any on the sticks. Hopefully it will be customisable in the game, so a bit of a moot point if so.

@Oram77 yeah I enjoyed the sub stuff. Hopefully there will be more UFOs to find in this one.

@JohnnyShoulder I quite like sprint on L3 but I agree I always prefer toggle over hold. It does sound like the game is going to be quite customizable from a gameplay and UI perspective.

@BearsEatBeets I'm going to make a wild guess and say you have big hands? I'm genuinely curious is L3 a thorn in your side? I don't mind it too much, but like I said on the article it surely breaks controllers after a while? I've never had stick-drift, my day one controllers are ship shape, I use an Edge now, but the lack of real force means they last. A game that requires reaction speed, is so fast moving, is that how people get drift? have you ever gotten it before?

Wow some of the comments for the L3 sprint article are... interesting, like people actually hate L3 & R3?? or they ruin controllers, not sure what people are doing but they must be running for their lives πŸ˜…

@GirlVersusGame Not sure why my liking using L3 would make L3 a thorn in my side? It's a little click to toggle run so it's never bothered me. My original controller for my launch PS5 is my first to get stick drift, which happened a few months back, but that was on the right stick. I managed with it for a bit but on some games it became like someone else was swiping my camera at random moments so I got a new one.

I did plan to take the old one totally apart and see if cleaning it out will fix it as sometimes that is all the issue is. I did a partial breakdown but didn't want to mess with some of the delicate connectors before having a replacement and then forgot about it.

Looking at the comments on the article it's a good thing it's going to be mappable as everyone has their own preference for controls πŸ‘

  • I visualize you as a big bear with claws, I visualize Ravix as a rabbit because his first avatar I saw was a rabbit. I'd see Sammy as a Martian from Mars Attacks if he didn't have his picture on the Editor part. The same system I use for everyone, it's automatic so when I see 'Bear' I think, big hands/big paws, small controller, fiddly sticks. I'm not trying to be offensive, it's just a natural something from day one here, the same for the chatrooms I use. You explained it through The Office, but I didn't want to picture you as Dwight Schrute either, you aren't awkward or a beet farmer. I know some people from here on other Apps and things, the rest I fill in the blanks, you guys are more than a string of words to me, even if I do see you as bears and rabbits.

@Oram77 it's a problem in the CoD community, I believe. A lot of hard, sweaty clicking and running about, less so in RPGs and the like, but i've had drift after years of use in a few controllers, mostly because of fifa, and not because of clicking L3, just the fact you are going in a lot of different directions a lot of the time and the left stick gets extreme usage wear because it is basiclly the main input for the entire game, less so than an RPG where you move by tilting normally and rotate r3 camera to turn, or gently camber to change direction a lot of the time. I imagine fighting games are brutal on the sticks too and are more suited to bashy bashy button mashy.

Pro controllers, though? They are the gamechanger. I was always skeptical, but they are rpg players paradise. Gently backpaddling for sprinting or any action you desire is so much more comfortable, and crouch feels intuitive on the other paddle too. Not sure how much crouch is needed in GTA but i'm sure there will be something I can assign to it that makes it feel intuitive, too.

And then there are games like Elden Ring where you have to develop the hook hand to do some actions at the same time πŸ˜… I'd imagine backpaddles for that would be awesome.

@BearsEatBeets the customisation really sounds great. As long as it all functions then giving people the choice is good. They are going for the accessibility award too, maybe πŸ˜…

And yeah, the slow walking outlaw was half the appeal. I think characters sprinting in games is sometimes a little wierd and not what they'd be doing (goddamn it, Jin Sakai!!! Slow down, man) It feels like a very ubisoft design feature, like with Kassandra in Odyssey when she reunites with someone dear to her. It is emotional, but then the next minute a quest started in another area and that person just legs it and you had to run after them to start yet another conversation, just because... "game" πŸ˜…

@Ravix The worst controller I had for stick drift was Switch ones, I must of gone through like 4 pairs of them, which is funny for two reasons 1) I hardly played on my switch 2) hardly any of the games I played were sprint heavy. I'm pretty sure they got sued over the stick drift as the quality control simply wasn't there. I've been using the Dual Edge controller for about 4 years now and while the price tag is a bit scary it's the best controller I've ever used and recommend it to people. Oh and special shout out for the "claw" technique being mentioned.

@Oram77 Nacon Pro Controllers were my go to for PS4, again no stick-drift, they had extra buttons too. I still have two unboxed, for if any of my other controllers ever experience drift. I will say this it's very strange one day playing with a Playstation One controller (today with Discworld) then again with an Edge, the next a PS3 one, the size differences are really noticeable. I haven't had that problem with the Switch 2, but those old SNES controllers are a little awkward. It's lost to emulation I'm sure but it is fun seeing and feeling those changes. Playing all of the Grand Theft Auto games in order was a lesson in controller variation too, Five felt very different, obviously more responsive, sharper too. I'm looking forward to seeing what other improvements Six makes, I imagine this thread will be very active, with many spoiler tags.

@GirlVersusGame Ah that makes sense now. Bears are surprisingly capable with a controller, they are just terrible for leaving beet stains all over them πŸ˜‰.

@Ravix yeah the more realistic the game the more realistic I move within it.

@Oram77 yeah, why wouldn't they map dash, roll and jump onto the face buttons that you need to use while simultaneously turning the camera to aim where you are going with that very same hand πŸ˜πŸ˜‚

Apart from that though, Elden Ring upped my Dexterity a bunch, I think. Knowing which jar of goop was active when scrolling through your inventory for topping up health, stamina and magic whilst in intense fights with very busy hands was another level in gaming i'd never experienced. I don't think it was ideally designed for console inputs, but it was learnable and flowed when you got it. Like a kind of second nature took over. I know when I beat Melania I had a little case of the scarlet rot, and while I was doing my victory twirls I had to quickly locate my rot cure and top up my health so I didn't ruin my prancing by falling to status effects. It wasn't a thought, just a reaction. Also... "HELLOWWW" (such a weird game πŸ˜… and i've never been in and out of a pause menu to do actual in-game actions quite like in Elden ring) all part of the fun.

Ooh, it really is. I have some spare analogue in a drawer. Maybe I treat myself to fresh sticks for the GTA release. I think one may have got fifa'd a bit, after thinking the pro controller would just be for my normal gaming only and keep the crappy old pads for any social/sports gaming like that. Woops. Hell of a pad though, i'm a convert and recommend it to anyone in the market for an upgrade.

@GirlVersusGame We clearly need GTA now! The state of this thread as we wait πŸ˜…

Ironically i'll barely be in the thread when it is out as i'll more likely just be in the game soaking it in instead, it is an experience for me, and apart from the occasional share to see how people are finding it, it will probably remain that way. Although it may be like BG3 where time not in the game is spent thinking about the game, and thus talking about the game in free moments throughout the day whilst looking forward to playing more 😁
