  • I honestly wouldn't game if I was bored of the hobby or bored of the system. I find that Plus+ alone is a kind of key ingredient in keeping me invested and in giving me something to aim for, the reason being that it allows me to try new genres that I normally wouldn't have any exposure to. When I do try a new genre it opens up a new world of possibilities and I find even more games that keep me invested.

I'm a casual gamer. I'm 41 so grew up on snes/genesis/n64/ps1 etc and I don't have that much time to play so I know it's going to be different for those of you who are hardcore gamers and get well into these RPG's and open world games but damn....it's starting to hurt.

  • I wouldn't call myself a hardcore gamer, efficient definitely but most days I can take it or leave it. I do have other hobbies, activities, and when I do game it's because I'm in the mood for it. I'd never force myself to enjoy any hobby if I wasn't feeling it.

I have PS plus premium and have been going through desperately trying to find something that really grabs me and keeps my attention. Nothing does!

  • Most of the Plus+ games I play came from recommendations and those recommendations came from people here. I just checked, the last fifteen games were recommended by people on this forum. It helps to get a little more involved in a community or to take an hour out of the day and just research different games to see if anything stands out. I've never taken a gamble on Plus+ and never had it pay off. When it comes to any subscription service I'd say consider trying the underdog titles, plenty of games hit the service that I'd never heard of before. Before PS5 I'd buy every PS4 game that released (except for sports) that wasn't gaming, that was collecting and I woke up one day and realized I'd spent years amassing it all for nothing. I've turned it around and now collect to preserve. I've limited myself to the services I'm paying for and I feel better for it. FOMO on massive titles creates a kind of 'I need to play this because everyone else is' and half the time that title isn't always for me. I saw so many people on the PSN forcing themselves to play games that they didn't enjoy, like they were obligated to follow the pack. Elden Ring is a perfect example, it's a fantastic game and one of my favorites but I remember so many 'this is too hard it's driving me crazy' they were forcing themselves to play something simply because everyone else was playing it. All they had to do was take a few steps back, deep dive other titles/genres and find something that did fit.

Do I really want to spend 60 hours delivering stuff across mountains for a decent enough story with no ganeplay innovation? I can just watch a film for a decent story.

  • I did that with over a million deliveries between both versions of the first game then got hyped for the release of the second game. I fired up the disc day one and after two hours something clicked. I felt that something was wrong, and I still don't know what. It resulted in me turning the game off, the disc went back in the box and it hasn't seen the light of day since.

I have a switch lite and seem to get so much more enjoyment out of games on there....they are getting on a bit now but when you think of mario oddyssey, zelda etc everything was cool and different (like Astro bot). The PS5 just seems to be lazy or to only cater to hardcore gamers. Xbox the same.

  • I have a PS5/Xbox/Switch2/Steamdeck, basically all of the toys and none of them in my honest opinion cater to one type of player. If anything I'd say that PS5 caters to casual gamers more than most systems, the problem is that smaller titles are overshadowed by Triple A titles and their massive marketing campaigns. PS5 has many games that feel very Nintendo/very retro but it takes effort to find them. I never depend on the main storefront, it would be like going to see Scream 7 when I can do a little digging and find a Lost Boys or a Susperia.

All of that aside there's no problem with taking a break either. I do it often, the last one was three months. I returned to the hobby refreshed and ready for the next adventure. Life is too short to spend it in stagnation, if gaming isn't working for you right now then maybe something else will.
