Is anyone else bored?

I'm a casual gamer. I'm 41 so grew up on snes/genesis/n64/ps1 etc and I don't have that much time to play so I know it's going to be different for those of you who are hardcore gamers and get well into these RPG's and open world games but damn....it's starting to hurt.

Maybe it's just me.

I have PS plus premium and have been going through desperately trying to find something that really grabs me and keeps my attention. Nothing does!

Astro bot.....absolutely perfect. This is an example of something that really worked for me. It was different, innovative, never got boring and kept my attention until I got platinum. The Last of us games were the same.

Everything now is just so normal, boring, lame. I can easily pick up the controller and have a few rounds on everybodys golf or play wwe 2k which is fine but where's the innovation. I tried Death Stranding...yeah looks nice. Kojima made sure his name was on screen about 15 times during the intros but then after a while....now what. Do I really want to spend 60 hours delivering stuff across mountains for a decent enough story with no ganeplay innovation? I can just watch a film for a decent story.

It's the same with almost everything else.

I have a switch lite and seem to get so much more enjoyment out of games on there....they are getting on a bit now but when you think of mario oddyssey, zelda etc everything was cool and different (like Astro bot). The PS5 just seems to be lazy or to only cater to hardcore gamers. Xbox the same.

Dunno. Maybe I'm overreacting. Rant over

@BolkaRover No boredom here. I feel like I’ve got a wealth of experiences to choose from. I wish I had more time because I can even get through all PS5 games I want to play.

But it does all boil down to your specific preferences. It sounds like you’re a fan of the Nintendo style of gameplay and there’s definitely distinct differences in the platforms. I’m not sure that there are many that reach the level of Astro Bot, although the style and design of things like Ratchet & Clank or Spider-Man might fit, or even really gameplay centric games like Returnal might be worth a go.

If you liked The Last of Us though, there’s more of that gritty style of game out there. I found the Plague Tale games to be quite good and sort of TLoU-lite if you want to try to scratch that itch again. They aren’t nearly on the same level of quality, but surprisingly solid games.

But if it’s innovation you seek, then the indies and AA space might be the best place to look. And going back to PS4 Gen will open up a lot of possibilities. I do feel like Death Stranding is incredibly unique and there’s not another game out there like it, but it’s not for everyone. If you want unique and innovative stuff then maybe Inscryption, Disco Elysium, It Takes Two, 13 Sentinels (I’m just looking through my trophy list thinking about games that are unique), Hitman, Valkyria Chronicles, Concrete Genie, Gravity Rush, Nier Automata, Shadow of the Colossus, The Last Guardian, Dreams… a lot of those are older but maybe you missed them and they definitely hold up and it looks like you don’t mind playing older games. If you want something new, that Clair Obscur game looks really unique and isn’t the standard character action game which I’m assuming you’re not interested in those (like all the souls-likes and God of Wars and Ghost of Tsushima/Yotei, Horizons, Days Gone, etc.) or the big Western RPGs that there’s tons of (like KCD, BG3, Dragon’s Dogmas, Witcher, Assassin’s Creeds, Dragon Age, etc.)

Hmm.. other innovative games… Banishers looks like a unique one. Hades. Stray. The Pathless. I’m hearing that new game Blue Prince is really unique.

Anyway, just some ideas. Hopefully you find something to rekindle your enjoyment! 😄

@BolkaRover

Well here's my two penneth -

To a certain degree yes i am bored.

I have been gaming on console since 1988 everything back then was brilliant new consoles were coming out all the time new titles were hitting the shelves regularly there were also shops where you could rent games meaning you could afford to try before you buy, it was great but then after many years it just got a bit old, the machines continue to turn out better looking graphics but to be honest how often do you stop and look at the scenery and think wow that is much better than the last console, the big games are sequels GTA, Ghost of, Assasins Creed the list is endless and at £70 i don't know how kids today can afford them.

So there you have my thought i am sure many will disagree i would love to hear from those who were playing back in the early console days and on that note its time to get my console fired up and see what adventure Indy takes me on tonight.

@BolkaRover Not bored. But I definitely prefer more premium experiences that reward you well for any time you give them, and the occasional thoughtful indie is a good way to reset, but there is a lot of middling games that, maybe i'd like, but I just dont play enough games to come close to trying them, so I'm definitely quite picky when choosing what to start. And there are lots of games I think I will definitely like that I just provably won't get round to.

I'm not overly fussed on gameplay, so if it is immersive and has a great story, characters etc that will do for me. As long as the gameplay loop itself isn't too grindy and repetitive in a noticable way

I still "fall off" games that I start, but I've always done that. Sometimes I go back to them, sometimes I don't. It can be a mood thing, or a time thing, or a combination of the two.

But the last few years have given us/me:

Red Dead Redemption 2. Kingdom Come Deliverance I & 2. Baldur's Gate 3. Elden Ring. Stray. The Witcher 3 (okay it's 10 years old, but it wasn't to me, as I came to it later) and for me they are most of my favourite games I've ever played, with maybe GTA IV and Red Dead I as the PS3 era games.

Death Stranding I remember being good in short bursts. The delivery aspect of things does open out the more you progress and as more story is unveiled. It isn't the most appealing gameplay loop, but its a top level experience worth seeing though, I found. But, if it isn't for you, you won't be alone in that, either.

Have you ever played the Uncharted series? I didn't play them originally (ps3?) But came to find Uncharted 4 on PS4 and that was a game that gave me a boost towards becoming more of a "gamer". And I've since sprinkled in the first three games maybe one per year via the "remake" package they released, and if you haven't played them, they could be something that gives you that gamer spark once more. They are all very good, again I don't personally love the gameplay, but the games themselves are very lovable.

In terms of other options, Zelda being one example you gave. I thought the opening parts of TotK were wonderous (exactly the same way Elden Ring was!) But I actually fell off TotK because it became very repetitive, grindy, and combat was just mashing one button and occasionally doing a back-flip 😅 so, other than art style, and the initial exploration, it wasn't actually as fantastic as I initially thought because it got way too long and way too grindy after the mid point. Which seems to be a similar problem you have with PS5 games 🤷‍♂️ Elden Ring nailed it though, that game kept it's wonder until the title's rolled.

Anyway, hope you either find that spark again, or just take some time away, do other things and come back to gaming once more. I feel there is hope yet, as I'm very much a non gamer who became more of a gamer, but I can still go for months without really playing much of worth if nothing tickles my fancy, usually in the summer months, and I know there will be good games to play that I've missed when I do feel the urge to get into some gaming again 🫡

I sometimes get in swings like this and have found roguelites/roguelike a good spot. Especially, on the Steam Deck where you have a large library to see new games. The genre will allow you to quickly get in and out without much of a story. Have some mindless fun.

@BolkaRover
Bored with PS5?
I LOVE my PS5 Fat machine!
PS5 is my best PlayStation machine I have so far.
I don't feel bored with PS5 because I played completely different games.
I only play kids games (with very few of Teen games), even on PS5 and I played with a lot of different genres so I get a lot of different gaming experiences.
I played games like Barbie, Paw Patrol, Story of Seasons, Kao theKangaroo, Ratchet & Clank, Cat Quest games, Portal Knights, Dragon Quest Builders games, The SIMS 4, Override, Paleo Pines, etc.
People will get bored with one video game machine if only play with same games all the time, not only on PS5.
Try to play completely different games with different genre to enrich your gaming experience.
If typical mainstream gamer only play games like football, shooter games, ultra realistic racing games, ultra realistic open world games, then I play completely opposite with them.
I don't like football, so I play different sport games like K-1, Tennis, Athletic sports, etc.
I don't like ultra realistic racing games like Forza or Gran Turismo, so I play Mario Kart and other cartoonish racing games.
I hate every single adult games with inappropriate stuffs, so I play kids games only with a few rated Teen games since I only accepted appropriate to watch games.
Well, that's how I play video games.

I HAVE BEEN CHANGED.... FOR GOOD. 💚💗

@BolkaRover I mostly agree & am shocked someone of older age feels the same way i do for the most part. the only part i disagree with is :

“ The PS5 just seems to be lazy or to only cater to hardcore gamers”

-It’s definitely lazy, but I don’t think it caters to hardcore gamers at all. The lack of variety/genres/exclusives & most of its games being third person & heavily inspired movie-esque, interactive cutscene games that’s made for the broad audience of casual whales that eat it up and are wowed by the production values & story, not so much admiring it as a video game imo. Games that basically play themselves while the “players” are there for the story and open world exploring.

@Hapless same here, been mostly playing on PC including the very few sony games that interest me like helldivers 2 (free online and better performance and features btw 😂) . The PS5/XSX/Switch generation as a whole is the worst console generation i’ve ever experienced. 7th generation was peak for me

Gaming since the spectrum, first console was sega master system. I've gone through periods of not gaming much, due to other interests, or life! Things have stayed fairly fresh for me as I've dipped in and out of Nindendo games, which feel so refreshingly different to PS/Xbox games, they almost act as a palette cleanser before my next big open world RPG / FPS game, etc.

Also, I played quite a lot of Indies on my switch, short games that often reminded me of the fun I had gaming when I was younger. Stuff like Untitled Goose Game, Celeste, etc. But echoing what others have said, just take a break for a bit!

If anything I have the opposite problem. There's just so much to play and too many choices that it often leads to playing nothing

With the PS5 alone (and back compact with all of the PS4 games), there's probably already a bit enough library of games that I could happily never play another system again in my life and still have plenty of games to always play/replay

Lots of problems with the industry as a whole, but as a gamer, life is still good

If you're able to set up an older console or emulation machine along side the PS5, you've got over 40 years worth of absolutely brilliant games

@BolkaRover Hi friend, 38yr old gamer here... dad to 4 kids and a busy job that involves a ton of travel.

Gaming has been really divisive for me generally speaking, and similar to you - I am habitually starting games, to then find myself bouncing off them and/or bored v quickly. Also, similarly to you again, I have limited play time... and struggle to invest time in games where actual 'game time' is limited by cut-scenes and or huge exposition (JRPGs, I'm looking at you...)

Agree fully Astro is a great game, and an awesome quick-fix to play in short bursts.

This might help you - the rogue genre was a key door opening for me, as these games generally support short/punchy playtimes. Hades is top in class, but if you really want to take advantage of the PS5 capabilities I would highly advocate 'Returnal'. Exhilarating moment-to-moment gameplay, terrific use of haptics and 3d audio also.

@BolkaRover you’re not overreacting. I’ve really enjoyed my PS5, but am conscious of the fact that many are not finding what they thought they’d receive this gen. Returnal alone has impacted me more than almost every other game in the last 5 years. It honestly rivals Bloodborne in how I consider the experience of its design composition.

But for many including yourself, there’s just not enough. And sadly, we know now why given how many resources they’ve spent with their GaaS approach. You and I no doubt would have taken anything else from their first parties instead.

That said, there are still many great games we could see in the next two years, and even for a casual gamer such as yourself, I think there’s a fair bit to look forward to. Don’t forget, the third party content has been astounding, and plays really well on the PS5 console, which is interesting given that Nintendo’s next hybrid system is out soon and won’t have the same oomph. Third party is still played best, at least to me, on PS5 (or Series X).

In the meantime, just go with how you’re feeling. If PS games seem to play the same to you, then wait a bit when games like Yotei come out so you can evaluate if it’s worth your time and money. It’s a hard and expensive world out there, and your time is precious. Buy what’s on sale, hang back on new releases unless you MUST have it… and just enjoy yourself.

I think there’s lots to be excited for on PS5 in spite of Sony’s tone-deaf decisions, so hang in there I’d say until the gen is actually over. You might be astounded at what comes.

I'm 36 and currently enjoying 'Silent Hill 2 remake' on PS5 pro. Gaming is still enjoyable to me but I do find most open-world games this gen to be boring. I like the more straightforward approached of games such as SH2 remake and others.
At age 36, I just don't want to invest all my time in one massive open world game with tons of content anymore, is boring, and life it's too short. Literally, not enough time for me to get invested in massive open-world games.

What a paragraph of complete and utter nonsense.
