Topic: Worst Game(s) you've played but didn't give up on and why?

So many glitches and bugs. Trophies that wouldn't pop. PS2 level graphics. Just not a poor game from a technical perspective. But there was something nice about playing a simple, small open world game that didn't involve killing and used painting as a mechanic.

Not because of the games quality, I actually thought it was really good. This was difficult because it triggered my anxiety. I started playing it in June 2019 but had to stop as my mental health deteriorated rapidly after my Grandfather passed away in March and by September I was suicidal. Earlier this year I gave it another go and played through the game, got 100% completion and netted the platinum. It constantly stressed me out mentally and for whatever reason was a major trigger to my anxiety. The only reason I think I got through it is because I'm on 400mg of medication per day.

I gave this question some proper thought over the weekend and, whilst I could write up an extensive list of games to share, I think the top spot will forever belong to NCIS: The Game on PS3.

For which I have the platinum.

I don't typically keep playing games that I think are awful or bad, but I think a game that stands out is Fallout 4. I was so disappointed with that game, but I played over 100 hours to see if the game varied any. It didn't. All you do is talk to an NPC, go to a location, kill the enemies, loot, and repeat. None of my actions felt like they had any real weight, and charisma, which was pretty great in Fallout 3 and NV (and my preferred route), was completely gimped. Not to mention it was horribly optimized, and just ugly to look at... I had hoped it got better, but it never did. I kept playing it because I loved every other game in the franchise, so I thought I knew I'd love that too! Looking back, that game was probably the start of when I got really jaded about new releases, I'm a lot quicker to say a game sucks, and move on now.

@Arugula Ah, so you know my pain? We deserve a cupcake.

@Draco_V_Ecliptic Yeah. I won't sit through games and hope they get better after a few hours. If I think it's crap after that amount of time, I'll just say it sucks and move on. I really appreciate games that don't waste your time; I don't know how much I have left.

@Kyroki That's a good shout! My biggest gripe with that game was the highly erratic autosave function and complete lack of a manual save option; I would get to a point where I wanted to stop playing and go to bed but would have to do a certain amount of story progress before the game would save.

It got pretty annoying having to decide whether to keep playing for an indeterminate amount of time or lose whatever progress you may have made since whenever the last checkpoint was.

@Thrillho Oh yeah, I forgot about that game’s weird save points. I went for the platinum on that one and it was quite a headache if you missed a collectible prior to a save point you were out of luck. I liked the game fairly well though; it had a cool vibe but it was rather slow paced.

Yes, I can definitely believe that about Fallout 4, I think I played about 20 hours of it or so and thought - why is this getting such good reviews? It had no soul and felt like a really poor remix of Fallout 3 which was far more entertaining. One of the biggest disappointments of the generation for me.

@LieutenantFatman Same. I upgraded my PC just to play it! After playing every Bethesda game since Morrowind on console I was so excited to finally play them on PC! What a disappointment it turned out to be! I read dozens of glowing reviews, and thought they'd seen something I hadn't!

Turns out, I was using an Appeal to Authority fallacy to try and convince myself I was missing something, but they're just people like everyone else, so I trust my gut and what I can experience before I waste my time.

@LieutenantFatman @Constable_What +1 to the Fallout 4 vote. Part of me wants to replay it having been on holiday to that part of the US last year but then I quickly remember the actual game kind of sucked.

And base building? Urgh.

I swear Morrowind is a better game to play in 2020 than Fallout 4. Especially if you replace every sound effect with the Tim Allen grunt from Home Improvement.

That’s hard, I’d have to go way, way back. I drop games pretty quickly if I’m not enjoying them these days, although I have got very far into games I have hated. I guess if I had to pick one from the current generation that I saw through to the end credits it would be Deus Ex Mankind Divided. Loved Human Revolution but MD was pretty bad in comparison... still not sure I’d say it was a bad game though.

Otherwise we’re probably talking Mega Drive era stuff I guess, and even then I doubt I completed anything I really hated.

Hey, I'd definitely play a 5th. If it was made by the team who made The Outer Worlds. Best Fallout game on PS4, easily.

@kyleforrester87
Retro games were definitely a lot harder to complete. Can't imagine getting to the end of one of those that I wasn't into. Good inspiration for another thread, which games took the longest to finish.

@nessisonett Don't forget the, "AEUHHH???" everytime someone dies. That or the Lego Yoda death sound for a truly legendary experience.

@LieutenantFatman Unfortunately that would mean getting an Xbox console.

I didn't hate Fallout 4, apart from the base building. Managed to sink well over 100 hours into the base game and DLC. My Dad loves the game but has never completed it as he cannot get his head round the base building. Shame they went down the Fallout 76 road, pretty scummy what they have done.

Nah, the PS4 version of The Outer Worlds is perfect, no need to get an Xbox to play it.
I was considering going for the platinum, the hardest difficulty trophy looks quite a fun challenge.

@LieutenantFatman I meant if Obsidian were to make a 5th Fallout game, as they are now owned by MS.

Yeah the Platinum looks very achievable, it did start another play through but I felt my enjoyment of the game begin to sap, so I stopped playing.

Yes, I find I need to leave a long period of time between replaying games if I'm going to enjoy another playthrough. Same with films and books though tbf.

It's a shame MS bought them, I think I'll definitely be sad not to be able to play their next title but at least there's an option to get it on pc as well if it turns out to be incredible.

@nessisonett Did you ever watch Boy Meets World alongside Home Improvement - I think that was on afterwards? I used to love that as a teenager, I remember Nickelodeon was one of my favorite channels besides Cartoon Network at that age. And I also remember we both watched shows like Adventure Time and Space Ghost Coast to Coast during our formative years. Did you ever realize what a Golden Age we were living in? Lol.
