@Yousef- yeah the GTA games are not only the progenitor but also the pinnacle… but that’s not to say there isn’t fun to be had with the products of its influence. Similarly with Souls-likes for a comparison… nothing else really offers that From Soft magic but that hasn’t stopped there being some very good non-From offerings in the genre.

Sleeping dogs is a GTA clone which is better than GTA, there I said it.

@CaptD great game, for me I’d still rate it below the GTA games of its time (GTAIV & GTAV) but a great open-world crime game all the same and I can understand why some people would rate it as better.

@colonelkilgore it’s actually funny you mention that as I have a similar struggle with getting into the non-FS soulslikes stuff as well. At least I found some comfort in Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight so that’s nice. It’s my favorite 2D game.

@Yousef- yeah I thought that might be the case… about non-From souls-likes anyway, I have no idea what Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight is 😉

@colonelkilgore I suppose an introduction is in, at least as a formality; it’s a 2016 Indie Title. Released on all modern systems. Only $9.99, which was really cheap at the time and still is. It’s pretty ahead of the curve with soulslike stuff, doesn’t even have a stamina bar which leads me to believe the similarities are likely accidental, but no matter what label you give it, it’s an extremely tight adventure from start to finish. Has some minor Metroidvania elements although the ultimate selling point is the simple yet intricately deep combat and all the cool weapons and power-ups and how much freedom the game gives you in tackling any fight. It’s generally a really great platformer too, I shouldn’t neglect to mention that. It’s a 5 hour long although I hear some people who rushed it beat it in 3 which I don’t recommend since it’s already light as a feather and won’t be a time sink by any means. Definitely meets the price tag.

@Yousef- sounds interesting. I’m not the biggest fan of 2D stuff but don’t mind the odd 8/16 bit sojourn, I’ll check it out.

I can’t find a general “currently playing” or a ps2 thread so this is the closest thing. After I’ve finished Ape Escape 3, I’m moving on to God of War. It’s really really fun so far.

We still have regular bouts of 'Worms 2: Armageddon' and 'MotorStorm: Pacific Rift' on our surprisingly quiet PS3 2503 Slim.

That's interspersed with Codemasters 'F1 Race Stars' (kart racer with F1 drivers from 2012!) and 'Commando 3: Wolf Of The Battlefield'.

@sanderson72
Love the Motorstorm games, all of them are quite different from each other which is rare for racing games. Pacific Rift is probably my favourite because of the locale but Apocalypse was pretty great as well. Fingers crossed we get a remaster especially, highly highly unlikely but they would make a great fit for VR.

I quite liked F1 Race stars as well, a rather basic game but I used to play that quite regularly in coop. Quite a rare platinum although not really a difficult one.

@colonelkilgore
Going back to The Saboteur and it being a little like Just Cause. I remember back in the day I played JC2 and Mercenaries 2 (The Devs game before Saboteur) and actually preferred Merc2 over JC2, both were destruction sort of games but Merc2 had more varied gameplay with some great unique mechanics for example you could hijack a vehicle and drive into an enemy base undiscovered, it was a little hitmanish with the disguise mechanic. A few systems were carried over to The Saboteur, for example driving a vehicle back to your garage which enables you to spawn it.
Mercs2 clearly had too many inbuilt systems for its own good as it was a little unfinished, thankfully The Saboteur was more polished.

@CaptD yeah the Mercenaries games (particularly Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction) is one series of games from the past I would love to get remade. The Legacy of Kain games would be another.

Worst loss of playtime due to a crash ever. I’ve been doing the ambient events on The Saboteur and as they don’t class as actual missions, the game doesn’t auto save after each one is complete. I was on the verge of completing Paris Area 2 (212 events and I had 3 left) and the game crashed. I’ve been ploughing through these since 8am this morning and they all have to be redone. Fuming! 🤬

Oh how annoying, there goes a few points off the final score.
Just as well the Devs have closed down otherwise I would have sent a strongly worded email to their support desk.

@CaptD think I’ll write a strongly worded email and send it to EA anyway… not about The Saboteur or anything, I just think it’s about that time of year 😉

@colonelkilgore tell ‘em to stop requiring an EA account to play Wild Hearts, thank you.

i’m still playing through the infamous games. i beat GoW3 (again) last month, and it still holds up extremely well(originals>remasters)! the ps3 is a powerhouse & such a great console for its time and even better than this generation imo. i’m still buying more games on it that i’ve overlooked in the past .
