When i start using my PS3 slim it just dies after a couple of minutes. Its like the power has gone. The device is completely dead and the only way to restart it is to remove the power cable and reconnect it again.
I opened it up and cleaned it (it wasnt as dusty as i thought it would be) and after that it ran a couple of hours before it died again and now it died after a couple of minutes again.
Does anyone know why this is happening and how to fix it.

Definitely the motherboard. Try vacuuming the console out every month or every 3 weeks, with a keyboard vacuum. If you’re going to do this, DO NOT use a can of compressed air. This pushes the dust deeper into the console, rather than suck it out. Also, the keyboard vacuum is small and low-powered and you can plug it into a USB device, unplug the PS3 and clean out the vents.

@John76 Do you hear the fan coming on just before the shut down?

Sounds like the thermal paste needs replacing which if I remember correctly is between the heat sink & the mother board. The PS3 shuts down automatically when it’s gets too hot. This happened to me too many years ago (I blame Skyrim) & my dad ended up fixing it by following a step-by-step guide on YouTube.

Luckily thermal paste is pretty cheap & the PS3 is pretty easily opened up. Just make sure to put everything back in the right place!

Yea, the fan starts up pretty straight away.

@John76 I’d guess it needs repasting then.

I had a PS3 FAT so I can’t say for sure, but I remember my dad having to open the entire thing up, get the dust out, apply the paste & then put it back together.
The Slim might be easier to open up, not really sure.

You could take it to a repair shop if you don’t want to do it yourself?
The easiest solution would be to buy a pre-owned PS3, but I imagine you have saved you don’t want to lose (which was the case with me).

An update.
I bought some thermal paste and opened up the PS3, following the video i linked.
While the fan was pretty clean the motherboard was much more dirty then i expected. So i vacumed it and cleaned the other surfaces and applied new paste.
Unfortunately this didnt help.
The PS3 starts up as normal and you can choose user. But if i try to access the hard drive the screen just goes black and after a while it shuts down just like before (so you have to remove the power cable to start up again).
