There’s a deep irony to Xbox revealing it’s “re-evaluating” its PS5 strategy on the day co-dev Virtuos confirmed Forza Horizon 5 has sold five million copies on Sony’s console alone.
Microsoft’s innate ability to build parasocial relationships with its biggest influencers temporarily took a break during the latter years of ex-CEO Phil Spencer’s tenure.
Years of mixed messages and broken promises seemingly sent the chatty executive to Redmond’s most well-protected bunker.
Now the Team in Green is rolling out the exact same playbook for incoming boss Asha Sharma, starting with signed Project Helix hoodies and a renewed emphasis on console updates.

This week alone has seen the company cut the price of its oft-discussed Xbox Game Pass subscription – which is still $3 per month more than it was a year ago, albeit without tentpole franchise Call of Duty moving forward.

It’s also rebranded its Microsoft Gaming division back to Xbox, announced amid much fanfare in a letter signed lovingly by Asha and Matt. (Booty, the man who has been running Xbox’s first-party through all of its troubles over the last few years.)
And while the corporate address is filled with buzzwords and slogans – it claims “Xbox will be where the world plays”, despite its market share eroding outside of the United States – it’s the question of exclusivity that continues to dominate headlines.
It’s clear that when the company discusses exclusivity, it’s speaking specifically about PlayStation and to a lesser extent Nintendo, because Microsoft is already deeply entwined with PC through Windows. If its next “console” will run Steam, as confirmed, then we can’t see it stepping away from that space like Sony supposedly has.

But I feel like this latest round of “flip-flopping” has taken us all the way back to 2023, with Spencer’s now infamous “four games” rhetoric.
Many of you will recall the company’s legendary “media briefing”, where it announced the likes of Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves for Sony’s console. It was, as stated at the time, no indication of Indiana Jones or Starfield following suit; the latter just got a big painted mural in London to celebrate its arrival on the PS5.
I say all this because Microsoft is very clever with its wording, and a commitment to “re-evaluating” its approach to exclusivity doesn’t really change anything. It can do this and still determine that PS5 may be a legitimate place to play, say, Gears of War: E-Day.

But it allows just enough uncertainty to re-open the debate, and it’s something I’m becoming increasingly tired of.
Over the past couple of years, we’ve seen Xbox influencers themselves argue for the abolishment of exclusivity; it, according to ousted executive Sarah Bond, is an “antiquated” concept.
We’ve even had Microsoft overlord Satya Nadella himself come out and say “we’re going to be everywhere, on every platform” in publicly facing forums multiple times.
Heck, the creators of Xbox’s flagship franchise, Halo, recently announced its remake while wearing a PlayStation shirt and saying the future of the Master Chief is on Sony’s system.
And now that’s all up for debate again.
Look, I’m not going to lie to you: I find the drama mildly entertaining at times. But there is a point where surely enough’s enough.

I’ve always argued in favour of exclusivity; I think it’s important for an ecosystem to have its own library of software so that it can establish its own identity. So I understand why Xbox enthusiasts, no doubt worried about the future of the brand, would be willing to push Microsoft in this direction.
I have no real quarrel with them – it’s the constant back-and-forth, the will they/won’t they approach from the organisation itself that I find draining.
I understand the flip-flopping keeps Xbox in the headlines at a time where its brand recognition is the weakest it’s ever been, but I’m urging the firm to come to a conclusion and stick with it.
I think Xbox, whatever it decides, would be best served to get its head down and keep its mouth shut for a little bit.
It’s one thing keeping your players abreast of the direction you’re moving in; it’s another to be flooding the space with vague, incoherent statements about things you may or may not do.
What do you make of Xbox’s latest spiel? Do you think it’s going to axe plans to port its first-party games to PS5? Are you tired of the organisation’s non-stop nattering? Let us know in the comments section below.

SInce Sony is screwing over PC players then I hope Xbox screws over Sony. Fanboys happy that PC players get screwed then whine when Xbox doesn't port their games. How ironic.
Since they seem to sell more on ps5, it makes sense to push it and keep releasing.
@Lavishturtle What games are we meant to be whining over?
I wonder if this quick pivot is because of gamepass is not bringing in the subs they wanted? And their big games from last year Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed failed to meet sales targets so they must know they have a problem.
Tbh, I do not think we have heard the last of this debate from Sony either. They were clearly very keen to port their exclusives only a few months ago. Is it really all that impossible that this time next year they'll be thinking about it again?
@Lavishturtle oh no! What will PC players ever do? Oh, right. Play any of the games that aren't available on PS5.
@Lavishturtle and PC gamers continue to be the biggest whiners in all of gaming. The difference is that the single player Sony games were not selling well enough on PC while reports show that Microsoft produced games are selling better on PS5 than Xbox, even the ones ported years later. I am not going to complain if Xbox goes back to exclusivity for their games as most of their line up doesn't interest me. It just doesn't make sense from a business standpoint when Xbox as a console is so far behind this generation that there is no way to catch up. They seriously need to get people to buy the next console if they want to be profitable otherwise they are going to be outsold 3 to 1 again by the PS6.
@Lavishturtle I think half sony's problem on pc is half their ports were kind of unpolished tbh.
Xbox fans keep believe the same crap over and over. Microsoft is not going back to exclusives, they're basically waving the white flag by making a "console" that can support multiple store fronts. What I don't see many people talking about is how that's going to impact gamepass numbers, a lot of subscribers have it just for online play and once they can buy their game on the steam store and play online for free why would they keep gamepass?
@Lavishturtle PC players kept saying they didn't want PlayStation games now they want them?
Why is it getting tiring? Either they bring their games over or they don't. What's going to get tiring is the amount of articles we can all look forwards to about this.
They have spent so much time telling everyone that their games will be available everywhere, to pull back now would be a bit insane. Not hardcore gamers, but casuals who don’t spend all their time checking out all these kinds of sites are not going to pay any attention to Microsoft’s messages and will only expect that they are going towards being a 3rd party developer. Apart from COD, Forza Horizon and Minecraft, which I feel would all stay Multiplatform, honestly I don’t feel like there is anything else that would turn heads really. One thing, if Microsoft revert to timed releases, that could be a messy situation too. Taking StarField, it came out a while back and garnered so much negativity that when it came to the PlayStation release, it pretty much failed miserably. At the time, Bethesda I think it was said that they were expecting to lose 6 million sales not releasing on PlayStation. They won’t be seeing sales like that now and that is why releasing games day and date on Xbox and PlayStation would help sales numbers as press won’t have a year to slate a game before it’s released again. On the flip side, if Microsoft went full exclusive, it may make Sony actually stop messing everyone about and actually try again, because this generation really has been a dogs mess…
After the BS they've pulled these last few years the Series X will be my last Microsoft console. If they pivot back to full exclusives then I'll guess I'll live without the next Doom.
They've been nothing but bad news for the industry for a very long time.
Where’s this article when Sony “flip-flop” with PC ports? Did you also get “tired” when Sony stopped PC ports? Or is it only valid now for Sony to change strategy?
Seriously this kind of inflammatory content is becoming exhausting, yes we’re all a bunch of PS players or fans, but this site lately seems like a cult where Sony is always right and everyone else is wrong, just look at what you posted the other day calling out players for not being interested in the Horizon live-service BS, you’re getting increasingly out of touch.
I must say I did prefer it when it was clearly game over and everyone but the most delusional fanboys accepted Xbox was toast and we all moved on. I don't think I've got it in me to go back to the "no really next year will be the year Xbox turns it around" days. The console wars. The embarrassing lack of basic knowledge about the games industry being peddled by Xbox YouTubers and eaten up by a community desperate for a win. The begging for acquisitions. Those cringe banners people made of all the Xbox characters together and all but one of them were just characters Microsoft bought. Oh man. The dark days.
Still, hopefully this is all just corporate bluster and we can just get back to Xbox being dead.
There’s more discussion and articles about Xbox on this site than PureXbox
If they did return to exclusives I can't see it playing out any other way than:
Xbox returns to exclusivity > Project Helix tanks as few people want to pay obscene money for what is seen as a dead format > Xbox releases on Playstation again > Xbox as a brand is dead and Microsoft looks like they have absolutely no idea what they are doing
I think they will port most major games, but I do think we will also see some more exclusives, perhaps timed.
It's been amusing to watch the usual suspects in Xbox's media orbit and cult twist themselves into Cirque du Soleil-worthy pretzels to parrot whatever their dear leaders at Xbox preach, but I agree with Sammy that it's gotten old at this point, especially on the exclusives front. I feel secondhand embarrassment watching the same people shamelessly change their stance about exclusivity based on what Spencer, Bond, Booty, Nadella, and now Sharma have said about it.
@Northern_munkey It's gaming news brother or how about it's called a discussion piece? the end of the day it still kinda involves PS
“we’re going to be everywhere, on every platform” with a nice biiiiig asterix right there, because this is the same company that signed a rapidly expiring 10 year deal for CoD on Nintendo, haven't put Minecraft on Switch 2, and can't decide if they want to put games on PS5.
They are coming fast and furious with the corporate statements
I wonder if Xbox is just following Sega’s playbook on how to win against Sony and Nintendo. It doesn’t look like things are panning out for the future of Xbox. Especially when the Pro is scooping up accolades left and right.
PlayStation is still too important to avoid it.
I think the much more interesting discussion at Microsoft is whether to leave Steam in favour of Xbox launcher exclusivity or not. These 30 per cent for Valve really hurts!
If Xbox really wanted to go back to exclusives they'd have to stop putting them on pc day one, otherwise what's the point. There's no way they'll stop putting them on pc as they need to sell game pass to as many players as possible. Don't think Microsoft will allow Xbox to shut themselves off from 110 million potential playstation customers either.
If Microsoft plan on staying relevant in the console market then they will need to keep some games exclusive to give people a reason to buy their next console. But abandoning multi-platforms altogether over the next few years would be foolish given just how much they lag behind Sony and Nintendo. It's going to take some time to rebuild their reputation after two highly disappointing consoles.
I do find the argument of "Xbox needs Playstation" and "Xbox games sell so much more on Playstation then anywhere" kinda tiring when both Avowed and Outer Worlds 2 both underperformed sales wise, and they released on the PS5.
Also Xbox won't leave Steam cause they already have their games developed for PC in mind for the PC Game Pass, and they've had their games on Steam for years. Also Steam's market is just too big for them to ignore.
Removed - unconstructive feedback
There’s part of me that wants Xbox to make exclusives simply to justify my purchase of a Series X. But look how few multiplatform titles sell on Xbox - the money lies elsewhere and, unless the Xbox hardware user base grows substantially, I just don’t know how the financials of Xbox would justify themselves. I am more interested in their games being available for a good price through Game Pass - that’d still be a decent reason to use and play on Xbox.
@Northern_munkey isn’t that point of the back forth being tiring? In the article it states “ I understand the flip-flopping keeps Xbox in the headlines at a time where its brand recognition is the weakest it’s ever been, but I’m urging the firm to come to a conclusion and stick with it.” so fairly certain the media may be sick of writing the articles. That being said. I believe it is a sales tactic by Microsoft. Get people to buy the ports asap with FOMO.
@Max_the_German if Microsoft plans on having a launcher and taking their games off Steam I say go for it!
They're practically a monopoly for PC gaming at this point, they need the competition.
Even if they change their plans I can still see the big budget games costing £100+ million definitely coming to Playstation day one, games like Call of Duty, Elder Scrolls, Diablo, Fallout and possibly Fable, heck even Blade might come over too. But they will have some exclusives even if it's just timed, smaller titles like Avowed, South of Midnight and Clockwork.
Then platform icons like Gears, Forza and Halo should definitely stay exclusive no matter what, these are the games that for me define the brand "Xbox", Just like how Mario, Zelda and Pokémon are what people think of when you mention Nintendo.
Also I think if it wasn't for gamepass then everything would be staying exclusive, they might not admit it but we all know the only reason any games are coming to Playstation at all is because gamepass has cannibalised game sales, and these games can't be sustained on monthly subscription fees alone.
Microsoft have really put themselves in an awkward situation and there's no win win scenario. Either stick with gamepass and put games on Playstation, or make everything exclusive and strip back gamepass to something similar to Playstation Plus so people actually have to buy games unless they want to wait 12-18 months.
@Oram77 it's also called an opinion.
@Lavishturtle except the problem with this is that xbox was making vastly more money on playstation than Sony was making on pc it would literally be detrimental for Xbox to keep its games off of ps5
Personally, I wish all three of the major consoles would have well-developed stables of exclusive series and surprising newcomers in the exclusive space. I love the kind of focus that making a console exclusive brings - really tapping 100% into the unique power of the console. And I would FOR SURE have one of each system to be able to play all those awesome games - IF I cared about the exclusives in question. I don't have a Switch 2 now because I could care less about all those games. And if all Xbox is going to have is Halo and Gears and Forza, I could pass on that too. But if they have exclusivity to Elder Scrolls, Fable, and a bunch of new IPs that I actually care about, I'd for sure buy their system - with a huge smile on my face.
I think MS has seen that its games have a market on PS, and doesn’t want to let that revenue go…but at be same time, they need to have SOME exclusives or there’s just no reason to even own an Xbox beyond greater backwards compatability.
I’m glad to see Team Green remembering that they’re a game console company first and foremost. Hopefully they do well! Maybe the Series X will remain my first but not my last XBox. Time will tell!
Wow poll is really split. Says it all about their incoherence and unpredictability.
@Northern_munkey I don't know man you sure do like to moan about a lot PS articles recently...
I haven't seen articles like that when Sony is flip-floping with their approach to exclusivity lol.
Why they brought Helldivers 2 on Xbox, but they are not bringing Marvel Tokon? Why they started publishing games on PC and then decided to stop?
It's pretty easy. Don't expect Xbox games on PlayStation, but when they do come, you can buy them. Otherwise you can play them in any other way to access Xbox ecosystem - PC, console or cloud.
New Xbox CEO literally said. Plan is the plan until it isn't. It's the same for Xbox and same for PlayStation.
@Lavishturtle for something to be ironic, you’d have to compare apples to apples.
Obviously it would be more convenient for me if they release TES VI and Fable on PlayStation, but if not I'll just get a Steam Machine and play them there.
I agree with @get2sammyb though - The constant flip flopping is tiring. It's almost teenage in the way they announce what they might or might not dramatically do.
Nintendo and Sony, for all of their flaws, they tend to strike up conversations about games. I'd like XBOX to focus on that again, instead of marketing slogans.
I remember the hype I felt for Halo 3 and Halo 3: ODST. I was nuts for those games. I just don't get that for XBOX anymore because when I think "XBOX" now I think about the faces of the brand, Phil Spencer and the likes.
If I think "Nintendo" I think of Mario Kart and Zelda. That's the difference for me.
Wouldn't call new leadership looking into different ways to move xbox forward in a healthy substantial way as flipflopping but ok.
The tiring thing is the overall negativity towards Xbox in these articles. Does it really matter if you don't get Forza Horizon 6 on PS5? You bought a PS5 for their game library not Xbox games. The recent batch of releases is a bonus in my view. Asha is just trying to make her mark. Let her crack on and just hope PlayStation don't shut any more studios.
I used to think I knew what Xbox was doing and had fun hypothesizing the various directions but now I truly have no idea and I don’t think they do either. The next seismic shift will be when streaming games is a reliable option, then all bets are off.
Can't have someone not contributing to the echo chamber huh @Oram77
@ElectricWizard Sick burn bro...
@Northern_munkey ikr, "it's so tiring" but they still managed two articles this week on the subject. But hey views & engagement so I expect more will be forthcoming.
Talk about taking the piss 🙄
@Lavishturtle what a load of nonsense Microsoft put them on Playstation because the Xbox brand is dying & making no money! these articles around the web acting like Xbox is doing something great is silly. maybe get an audience first then worry about exclusives. Playstation is not going to prop up Steam dipping its toes into the market common sense! & Sony never did day one on games anyway. guessing the money made on PC was not worth it long term? everything costs money.
I dont care if they take them away or they stay! it is not going to change anything I game on Playstation that is how it will stay.
In fairness to Xbox, they are under new management, and it stands to reason that they may now take a new approach.
As for what they will do next, I think they may dabble in timed exclusives for a year or two, but will quickly revert to releasing everything day and date on PlayStation...
Can’t MS see what a joke they’re making of themselves? If you look holistically at all the things they’ve said versus the things they’ve done including the 180’s it’s like a badly written soap opera.
Their lack of direction is embarrassing to the point that I’m embarrassed for them.
@Lavishturtle - The big difference of course is that non of the Sony games were, historically, multi-platform to start with. M$ just bought what it could to try and starve the competition, realised they are hopelessly incompentent at managing anything they can't buy a solution for. And now they're flip flopping again because as with everything M$; if they haven't got the monoply they just can't compete.
Choosing to go back to not to making money would be an interesting business decision, to say the least.
Surely a new CEO is allowed to set out her vision for the business? She was hired to bring something different and is doing that.
@Alpine Xbox does make money for Microsoft.
I think Bethesda and Activision games are very right stay, but others might go back to being exclusive.
Flip-flopping, or at least considering it, is normal when there's a change in leadership. New leader wants to put his (or her) stamp on the organization, so old decisions are reevaluated. It's WAY to early to know if this will lead to a real change in policy, or if it's just another way to keep themselves in the news cycle.
I will say that selling well on your competitor's console makes exclusivity a harder sell, so I think Microsoft has a serious challenge ahead of them.
I suspect a bifurcated approach. Certain tentpole titles will be timed exclusives, lesser titles will be fully exclusive, but tentpole titles where multiplayer is the primary focus will drop day 1 on PS as well, since that only helps them sell more copies on ALL platforms.
@Oram77 well I'm either too negative or I'm bristling with toxic positivity. When I defend PS's articles I'm a shill and a rabid fanboy and when I don't I'm a miserable f**ker. If my opinions bother you that much hit the ignore button brother..
@SMJ Yep that's why it was soooo dumb for them to basically attempt to blow up their model reaching for more profit. I'm guessing it was all a microsoft call and not an xbox call.
Didn't know people were forced to read these articles and then also forced to comment on them.
@Lavishturtle fanboys crying about other fanboys behaviors. Also ironic
Really? 😆 Based on the number of articles where you criticize them, you seem to have an issue with them.
They tried to maintain exclusivity and it didn't work for them already. And obviously they are spending a lot of money so these news are on every major website to include "playstation only" sites. I think they'll try with some of their best tittles and see how it goes and stay exclusive if they are getting enough revenue. But I don't think it will work out for them.
@Americansamurai1 what PC gamers said that though? Who elected them to speak on behalf of all PC gamers?
If you check my post history, I've spoken out in favour of titles being available on all platforms, with no exclusivity.
That way we can freely choose whatever hardware we prefer, without being locked out of games.
I "main" whatever device I own that is the most powerful/least troublesome at the time.
At the moment I'm "maining" PS5 Pro as the XSX isn't as powerful and whilst my PC is more powerful than a Pro, it's more trouble than it's worth.
That's a dynamic situation and will change e.g. if MS release a next gen Xbox, or if the current generation goes on so long that the performance deficit to PC makes using one worth the hassle.
The only problem is that whether I choose PS, PC or Xbox, I end up having a load of my games being stranded on my least-preferred platform. That sucks.
Gamers do not benefit from this system. Only people who win are the suits at the big tech firms who care not one iota about you.
They won't drop it completely but it won't be as all in as before.
Most American tech companies are out of touch lately. They think they shape the world with their decisions believing they have papal infallibility.
I have no problem with them going back to keeping games originally exclusive to Xbox as exclusive as long as they keep everything that was third party from the Bethesda and ActivisionBlizzard acquisitions as just that. A lot of the past week as all been great PR for them in making their current Xbox users happy but they need to commit to something long term rather than flip flopping every 18 months when their new vision isn't working out as quickly as they expected.
It always starts off good when they make themselves kinds of announcements but they have a track record at this point of getting impatient and then confusing everyone by telling them the opposite of what they did the last time they made a change and then repeat the same thing next time.
I would very much buy both a Playstation and Xbox next gen if they offered unique games you can't play on the other system because as much as certain people saying exclusives don't sell systems. One may not but if you have a large library of them giving people a bigger selection people are more likely to consider buying your console as a result.
@IOI To be fair Sony hasn't actually confirmed or even commented on the PC ports stopping.
I highly want Xbox to succeed, especially as Sony has crapped the bed so badly the last 5 or so years, but it’s funny to see how many buy into the corpo PR they’re spewing.I really want them to be a competitor again like in the 360 days but I don’t know if I can ever see that happening again.
So what?! Microsoft is free to do with their IPs as they wish. No one is entitled to others IPs. Be mad at Sony for not providing enough in house experiences this generation and doing so much for live service games.
@PloverNutter Well obviously Xbox games are going to sell better on playstation....they are on game pass day one on Xbox lol
Damn, Push Square is doing more Xbox articles than Pure Xbox lol.
I hope Xbox brings back exclusives to bring back the competition that Sony needs to not be charging £520 for an 825GB
digital PS5.
You got your engagement, and I get Hookshot has bills to pay, but you are losing integrity with articles like this.
@Fiendish-Beaver
“ In fairness to Xbox, they are under new management, and it stands to reason that they may now take a new approach.”
This is exactly right, and it’s “teenaged” and entitled-sounding to rail about things being too complicated to track. Strategies and tactics shift and Asha Sharma was brought in precisely to revisit the direction and make some big calls. Sorry if it’s, you know, tiring.
Call in Ash from the Evil Dead. Xbox been operating like their whole squad over there got possessed by a Kandarian Demon. And that witch Asha, down in the cellar is only part of it.
Xbox- "I'll swallow your soul, I'll swallow your soul"
Playstation- "Swallow this!!!!"
@IOI @Northern_munkey totally agree
@Metonymy They are the epitome of a bunch of chickens running around with their heads cut off.
Let's do this. Ok.
No, let's go back to that. Ok.
No, let's try this. Ok.
Nahhhhh lets go back to that but do it like this. Ok.
Another week, another whiny/entitled op-ed article on PushSquare. All we’re missing is a news article with a bias-ridden headline.
I think its all BS marketing speak for Project Helix. They'll probably have one or two titles that will be "exclusive" for the launch. Just to drum up excitement for the fanboys and try to draw whatever people they can from other platforms. I'll keep saying this I wouldnt believe at word them or Sony says. If they do speak its just to get you to open your wallets. The moment that plan isn't massively fruitful theyll bail on it.
@Northern_munkey You always resort to the "press ignore button" bro we have been though this already, sometimes we agree sometimes we don't...
@Vaako007 Correct. But who is more entitled these days than gamers?
