Xbox Game Exclusivity

The new Xbox head Asha Sharma has confirmed the division will "reevaluate" its approach to video game exclusivity in a comprehensive letter to the Xbox audience.

Available to read on Xbox Wire and titled We Are Xbox, a lengthy statement covers the brand's new plan under Asha Sharma. As it touches on the coming months and years, Sharma states: "Along the way, we will reevaluate our approach to exclusivity, windowing, and AI, and share more as we learn and decide."

This is something that was recently rumoured, as Windows Central reported Xbox was debating internally whether to make its games exclusive again. It's now publicly confirmed that those discussions are taking place.

For a few years now, Microsoft has been porting its Xbox and PC exclusives over to PS5 and Nintendo Switch at an increasing rate. It's gotten to the point now where it is assumed that first-party projects from Xbox will release on PS5, whether that's on the same day as the Xbox Series X|S or not long after.

In recent months, Gears of War: Reloaded and The Outer Worlds 2 launched on PS5 at the same time as Xbox. In the coming months, Forza Horizon 6 will release first on Xbox and then come to PS5 later this year. Fable is confirmed to come to PS5 day and date with Xbox, and so too is Halo: Campaign Evolved.

It's extremely unlikely these internal discussions within Microsoft will affect anything the firm has already announced for PS5, but should it return to some form of exclusivity, there's a chance unannounced ports could be scrapped. The likes of Clockwork Revolution, Hideo Kojima's OD, and State of Decay 3 don't have a confirmed PS5 version yet.

Asha Sharma and Matt Booty signed off saying:

Over the last five years, Xbox and the industry have been through an unimaginable amount of change, and this team has continued to deliver through it for our community. Thank you for staying focused on what matters. 62 days in, we’re proud of how we’ve honored our commitments of great games, return of Xbox, and future of play. We’re here to do the most creative and courageous work of our lives, and that’s what we’ll do together.
