Let's have a look at some of the games in PS Store's January sale.
Absolum (PS5)
$19.99/£15.99 (-20%)
Absolum is both a brilliantly crafted beat-'em-up and a devilishly addictive roguelike. Although the overall experience does feel slightly short-lived, you'll seriously struggle to tear yourself away from the game's striking fantasy world — especially when all of its systems start to click.
AI: The Somnium Files (PS4)
$3.99/£3.19 (-80%)
AI: The Somnium Files tells an often engrossing tale. It takes a couple of hours to really get going, but when it does, it blossoms into one of the most impressively executed visual novels on PS4. A range of characters, both surprisingly deep and brilliantly stupid, elevate an already intriguing and smartly paced story.
Animal Well (PS5)
$17.49/£13.99 (-30%)
A 2D Metroidvania like no other, Animal Well is an extremely rewarding game — if you're willing to lose yourself in it. The sort of mysteries it's hiding go well beyond finding collectibles, giving you a rich and detailed world to unpack. If you have the patience and the curiosity, it's absolutely worth plumbing its depths.
Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy (PS4)
$19.99/£15.99 (-60%)
It's very hard not to love Ace Attorney, and that trend happily continues with the Apollo Justice trilogy. The games themselves are steeped in charm thanks to well-written, melodramatic stories and a great ensemble cast. They've been treated with respect, too, with lovely visual improvements and an enjoyable array of extras. While some weak spots here and there are inevitable, and some of the series' flaws are still present, overall there's little to object to.
Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration (PS5)
$17.99/£15.74 (-55%)
While many of the included games may border on unplayable from a modern perspective, the painstaking attention to detail in Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration is extremely easy to appreciate. The museum-like carousel of content, from interviews through to original artwork, is presented so handsomely that you can’t not get swept up in Atari’s dramatic story. And the fact that there over 100 of the company’s most famous titles, emulated excellently with their original instruction manuals available to pore over, adds playable context to a lot of the content. This is just an impressive overall experience that will appeal to those who lived through the rise (and fall) of Atari, as well as younger players eager to learn a little more about one of the industry’s true pioneers.

Baby Steps (PS5)
$13.99/£11.19 (-30%)
Baby Steps is more than it first appears, offering up a heartfelt story about a man grappling with his insecurities as he's forced to keep going. The intentionally tricky walking and climbing is a lot of fun to grapple with, and there's plenty of silly stuff to discover in the open world setting. Your mileage may vary due to various factors, not least the amount of punishment you'll take as you scramble up the mountain, but it's a journey worth taking for those willing to persist.
Blasphemous II (PS5)
$9.89/£8.24 (-67%)
Blasphemous 2 takes the foundations of its well-received predecessor and builds upon it in all the right ways. Tweaking combat to make it faster, smoother, and more accurate, removing insta-death scenarios to make platforming more manageable, and packing the game full to the brim with secrets and collectibles. The great attention to detail in the presentation and high level of polish make Blasphemous 2 a delightfully memorable experience that players will look back on fondly for years to come.
Bloodborne (PS4)
$9.99/£7.99 (-50%)
The spiritual successor to FromSoftware's supremely popular Dark Souls property, Bloodborne fuses the lip-smackingly satisfying combat of its predecessors with a frighteningly fast pace, resulting in the most intense action on the PS4. Harrowing Lovecraftian-like fiends and larger-than-life bosses vie for the attention of your Saw Blade, as the dingy districts of Yharnam intertwine. A steep difficulty curve can make this occasionally putrid escapade appear off-putting, but soldier through the skin and sinew and you'll find a bloodbath worth submerging in.
Celeste (PS4)
$4.99/£3.99 (-75%)
From the makers of TowerFall Ascension, Celeste is a pure platformer that provides a stern challenge. Using a straightforward set of moves, it does a lot with very little, but it's not just gameplay where it impresses. Madeline's climb up Celeste Mountain is both literal and metaphorical as she struggles to overcome her inner demons. Wonderfully pairing a touching story with rock solid platforming, this is one indie adventure that'll stay with you.
DOOM: The Dark Ages (PS5)
$34.99/£34.99 (-50%)
DOOM: The Dark Ages goes for something slightly different as it turns back time for a medieval assault on hell’s legions. Not every change pays off, as the introduction of a mech and dragon adds very little to the overall experience. However, when The Dark Ages gets to the FPS action, there aren’t many who do it better than id Software. Take some time to adjust to DOOM: The Dark Ages, and you’ll discover another fantastically ferocious first-person shooter.
Eternights (PS5)
$7.49/£6.24 (-75%)
Eternights' great success is that it manages to be more than the sum of its parts. The witty writing papers over the shakier aspects of the storytelling, the slight combat is used sparingly enough that its flaws rarely frustrate, and above all, it's got an undeniable charm despite its rough edges. We're swiping right on this one.
Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster (PS4)
$9.99/£9.99 (-60%)
If you're itching for an angsty JRPG that's very much a product of its time, Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster is the game for you. Square Enix did a great job of updating this saga for both modern and nostalgic audiences. Even though parts of it have definitely aged, Final Fantasy X remains a landmark release, telling a love story that's full of weird twists, spread across an intriguing and unique fantasy world. X-2, on the other hand, borders on fan fiction. A direct sequel to X that's campy beyond measure — but it's still a fun time thanks to well worked gameplay mechanics.

I just picked up Armored Core VI as a direct result of this article. I love mech games, though I tend to gravitate to the Battletech ones (i.e. MechWarrior 5: Clans), and I loved the Earthsiege and Starsiege games as a kid, but the occasional Japanese-flavored mech game scratches another itch entirely. I'm looking forward to it.
Gotham Knights worth it for that price? I could go for a bit of superhero action.
I know it means going to an external source, but I’d appreciate it if you had a separate section for (or only included) games which are put to their lowest price ever. Sales which keep putting games down to the same old price are not sales, just normal prices with periods of being massively conned when they temporarily go up again…
Crazy to see AC Shadows “discount” for the ultimate edition to be 94.99 because it will probably be under 30 this time next year. To each their own but Jesus I can’t rationalize spending that much on an ubi game.
@get2sammyb yes at that price its worth a go. It's not dire, it has its moments. I enjoyed some of the boss fights.
It's one of those games where you can tell it was originally designed to be a live service and then switched to single player during development type of game.
Blimey, a sale on a FromSoftware game! I’m still a bit scared to play Elder Ring, I’ve managed to game my whole life and remain terrible at games like that. One day though, when I’ve got the expendable money to risk it.
What does early access matter? LOL, it's digital sales, infinite supply, for games that will be on sale over and over again for that matter. I mean, buy it now or buy it in January or even later next year when they're on sale again.
@4fold your not alone and the fact they know we know is worrying.
Forza at 36? Come on, Microsoft. It's too old for that
I need to save on ps+ . I refuse to pay full price.
@DogPark Because some people want to play these things before/during Christmas at the discounted price?
I think it's BS that access is hated behind the Plus sub, but that doesn't mean that people won't take advantage of the offers right now.
I was thinking of picking up Forza Horizon 5, and you reminded me how utterly frustrating the AI is.
@deezcronuts Oddly, Forza was cheaper ($30) back in September: https://psprices.com/region-us/game/8426788/forza-horizon-5-standard-edition
So, I was expecting it to be that low for the holiday sales, too.
The ps5 version of DQ 3 does not have 3rd person battles. I think these are from a modded pc version screenshots...
Edit: So, It kind of has 3rd person only when selecting battle commands, then switching to first person. My bad
@OptimusPrime1
Correct! I pointed this out in the other article (I guess the comments didn't get merged), but yeah, Standard Edition for Forza was $30 in September. Black Friday and now this sale, it has not hit that price again.
I shoulda jumped on it. That said, I kinda wanted the Premium, which is following a similar pattern ($49.99 in Sept, $59.99 on sale since), so the temptation is still there to wait out a better deal lol
@get2sammyb I loved it. Runs 30fps but its done real well.
Why are "sales" prices still being talked about as a bargain. Steam is as bad, they aren't sales, they've all been at this price before. Don't believe the brainwash. I use cdkeys as it beats steam, but I haven't bought a PS5 game because of Extra in yonks.
No, thanks. I’ll stick to buying games and going through my backlog. All these deals are to try to entice gamers to see the “value” in PS+.
The only thing I see is online mp that is arbitrarily blocked behind a paywall and a service that is anything BUT essential.
@guacguacboo
I would not spend that money on ANY game. The only games I paid more than $40 is Elden Ring and few rare DS/3DS games that would grow value.
I played most of Sony, Xbox and Nintendo titles, plus lots of 3rd party titles, and always wait for sales or preowned copies.
There are better ways of spending money
I got armoured core for 15€ physical and a fair amount of these titles for the same price or cheaper on disc. Digital is seldomly a good deal unless it's under 10€.
@Slippship absolutely agree
@The_Wailing_Doom I got it on PC they absolutely broke the game with an update to the anti cheat as it causes FPS drops and they never fixed it
@Slippship Steam sales haven't been revenant since the end of the Steam Flash sales now that's when steam was brilliant. I could spend £50 and I would have bought about 20 games well known ones as well
ac shadows is 40 euros for me and that is a totally great price i’m contemplating getting it
They aren't sales any more even with PS+ there not worth it you can get them cheaper on disc if you look hard enough, how GTA5 is still £40 I don't know when it's always in the sales list every month.
And Borderlands 4 for £119 jesus get the F out of here, I got Farcry 4 3 months ago for like £3.79 now thats a sale but picked up the season pass 2 days ago for £3.30 as well. Star Wars Fallen Order I got for like £3.99 those are the prices for older games id like to see
@judgmentarrows if you hold on a little bit longer, it'll inevitably be under 20 or even free on PS+, 40 is still way too much
Enjoyed Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night for the most part a while after it was released, and see PushSquare gave it a 9/10.
Currently playing Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree, and to me it is a better game than fellow 'Castlevania Clone' BRotN.
@get2sammyb Mandragora is worthy of a review as much as Bloodstained, even if it is belated.
@deezcronuts Its the best game Xbox released since Forza Horizon 4 in 2018, let them charge whatever they want for it.
BF6 is about £35 from some retail stores.
@get2sammyb Late reply but the main problem this game has is not having much to do in the open world (not anything interesting anyway). Story missions are pretty good and gameplay overall is alright, although definitely not nearly as good as the Arkham games.
Oof, yeah, this is bad. I managed to spend only a small sum for BF and Holiday sales. But I got pinged for A LOT of goodies this time. Fantasy Life I is on sale for the first time! Dispatch also, with a somewhat negligible $3 off. PowerWash Simulator 2 also a small discount. Silksong and more!
RIP wallet indeed
@Hyena_socks
"Blimey, a sale on a FromSoftware game! I’m still a bit scared to play...."
You should give it a go. The great thing about E.R. is the fact that if you get to a boss you can't beat... just run away and level up doing other stuff. Then come back and beat the snot out of them. Go where you want and do what you want. Elden Ring is awesome and made me a believer. It is also in my opinion the easiest of the Dark Souls games because you can run away and level up. I highly recommend it!
@Svark that’s great to know, thanks! I’ll take the dive next year when my backlog is down a bit.
I can't stand browsing the store I'm done I'm just going to now go out and find games 2nd hand on disc perm, I'm so fed up of the shovelware crap on the store filling up sales slots that could be used for other unknown indie title
Even the PS app has a bug were if your browsing the store say under sales and are scrolling near the end of the list or half way through. It duplicates the same games again then some different ones then the dame set of games again. Sick and tired of seeing AI generated assets flip BS that are clearly just for people to boost trophies they need to clean it up
browses comments to see if people are already moaning about a digital sale and that stuff is cheaper on discs and that they hate Sony and that they hate gaming
As ever, not disappointed in my search.
@1970sGamer lol always the best moments.
Now you guys be careful with them purchases, we don’t want another Bend Studio fiasco “If YoU HaD bOuGhT iT aT fUlL pRiCe We WoUlD hAvE mAdE a SeCoNd GaMe”
Still no Erd Tree discount. Beginning to look like I'll never play it.
@1970sGamer
Perfectly happy as far as I'm concerned.
Mostly because work generously gave me a 180€ gift card ^___^.
Now, all that remains is to select which one of my wishlisted items will make it into the backlog and which will have to wait for another sale...
That's the kind of problem I like. Those perfectly disconected from the real world's trouble
Buy physical for more value ❤️
Satisfactory is on sale at -15%, at least in Europe, that is... that's good news !! 😊
The sale actually doesn't end until 21st jan. They just added loads of new games to the sale to replace the ones ending on 7th jan.
I’ll immediately go to Amazon to order these 99+ games that are on sale in the PS Store.
How's the player-base these days on Rematch? Very tempted.
What I'm not tempted for is Absolum. That's an instant buy for me now. I actually picked up four new games last week - Shinobi, Divinity Original Sin 2, The Crew Motorfest, Gears of War. And I'm balls deep into Death Stranding 3... those will all be getting shelved this weekend for Absolum.
This might be the first time in a really, really long time I didn't get a single ping from my wishlist. Kinda wild. I did pick up a handful of things with the part 1 of this sale, and like 1-2 things for BF, but man.
Fallout 4 is $5. I haven't played a Fallout game in years, so why not? I started it last night, and it's neat.
Incidentally, it's fun to juxtapose the "War never changes" line with the one from Metal Gear Solid 4, "War has changed."
@guacguacboo if you really want to play it, just give it a couple of months or so when it will inevitably be free on PS+
Picked up Absolum a few days ago it's an absolute blast. Also, I can't recommend Tchia enough, it was one of my favorite games of 2024.
We are OFK being on this list unironically is wild
@Steeleye25 I've just put two hours into Absolom, and absolutely loving it so far.
