Microsoft Exec on Helldivers 2: I'm Not Sure Who It Helps By Not Being on Xbox 1

Microsoft will bring four first-party titles to PS5, but it’s refusing to name which. Said titles will not include Starfield and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which will remain exclusive to Xbox and PC, until circumstances change. Xbox bigwig Phil Spencer, however, has seen the success of Helldivers 2 – and is struggling to see the advantage of the PlayStation-published shooter not being available on Xbox.

“I will say, when I look at a game like Helldivers 2 – and it's a great game, kudos to the team shipping on PC and PlayStation – I'm not exactly sure who it helps in the industry by not being on Xbox,” he told journalist Stephen Totilo’s Game File. “If you try to twist yourself to say, like, somehow that benefited somebody somewhere.”

Spencer did admit that there’s a “legacy in console gaming” which has led platform holders to believe they’re going to “benefit by shipping games and not putting them on other places”. In fact, he reflected: “We do the same thing!”

Perhaps, though, if he’s really uncertain about the purpose of exclusivity and the advantages it has, he should consider why Xbox has only announced four unnamed titles for PS5 today, and not more.
