All the way back on 18th December – which feels like a lifetime ago now – Sony made the unprecedented decision to remove Cyberpunk 2077 from sale on the PlayStation Store. It’s now been a full month since that decision was made, and it remains impossible to purchase the CD Projekt RED developed open world RPG from the Japanese giant’s digital storefront.
As part of an FAQ outlining its “commitment” to players moving forwards, the studio said that it’s “working on fixes and updates” and aims to “bring Cyberpunk 2077 back to [the] PS Store as soon as possible”. A new patch is due imminently, so it’ll be interesting to see whether it solves the major issues or not.
If you’d have told us this time last year that Sony would remove the game from the PS Store for an entire month, we’d never have believed you. It’s clear that the game was not ready for primetime, however: our reviewer, Robert Ramsey, poured almost a hundred hours into the title, but he still hasn’t been able to finish it due to a game-breaking bug.

I still want this game on ps5, but I’m definitely waiting for a good sale.
I’d rather they didn’t until the game is properly fixed.
Unacceptable to have released the game in the state it was and right of Sony to act in some way at least.
The apology given was a joke and unless the investor lawsuits win the cases against them, they’ll be laughing. Waited until after the two week sales boom and the holiday period to issue an apology. They know fully what they’re doing, and its top notch scumbag business.
I predict a new patch friday, followed by the ps store having it back up by Monday. Any takers?
@LordSteev That does seem possible, yeah. If the patch fixes the critical issues, then I imagine it'll return to the PS Store at the same time it becomes available.
@get2sammyb I hope so. I think it's a way better game than all the hate it's generated. CDPR very guilty of self-inflicted wounds, though.
@Mega-Gazz I could also be tempted, but I need to get a hold of the PS5 first, and that seems to be an impossible task as of now...
What was the game-breaking bug?
Player count for Cyberpunk has been steadily declining on Sony consoles since it was removed from the store, which makes logical sense.
On PSNProfiles, more people are playing Ghost of Tsushima, Maneater, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider than Cyberpunk this week.
I wonder whether Sony would do this to one of the big boys, like if we saw an Assassin's Creed Unity situation again from Ubisoft
Whilst I imagine this will go down in gaming industry as a prime example of Premature Release amongst other things, question is will those lessons be learnt or just result in another “Lets All Laugh at an Industry That Never Learns Anything Tee Hee Hee” episode?
Also how long before the first “I’m enjoying it and thus so should everyone else” comment?
@ymagre for me, there wasn't one. I've put in about 180 hours on a base ps4, and nothing is so broken you can't get past it. From everything I've read, I think it actually crashes more on ps5 than ps4, although I'm sure it's 'prettier' on the 5.
@Gremio108
I think the only reason Sony did it in this case is because they were peeved about CDPR's refund comments.
I'm hoping that when/if I manage to get hold of a PS5 then I'll be able to download it on that system from my library.
@ymagre I'll let @ShogunRok explain, but I believe characters have stopped calling him so he can't progress with several quests.
@Gremio108 I think if Ubi requested refunds for customers then yes it would. Why would you continue to sell something where the creator has said its not fit for purpose? You're going to wait till its fixed. Otherwise you are knowing selling a broken product.
@LordSteev
Sony is mad that there refund policy or lack there of got exposed by CDPR this has thought me never to buy 3rd party games on a sony system.....
@get2sammyb @ymagre Yeah, the phone is completely broken in my game — I can't receive any calls or texts from quest givers, which stops me from doing anything. My quest log has a bunch of broken quests, one of which is a main story quest. Totally busted, and at this point I'm not even convinced that it can be fixed.
Version 1.06 is just as buggy. Crashes consistently even on PS5.
I've not played it since I platinum'd it but, it hasn't been patched since.
@Gaming365247 Yep. Have you ever read the small print when you buy a game from their store online? It's scary stuff. I limit my purchases to super sales or things I can't find locally. They are very draconian in their anti-refund efforts.
@ShogunRok geez man, thankfully I haven't run across this particular bug. If anything the most annoying thing for me is when one of the fixer/used car salesmen calls me when I'm right in the middle of a conversation with a deal I just cant refuse...
3-4 years ago I was super hyped for this game and yet until I read this article I completely forgot about it over the last month, that's how much cd project turned me off this game and will end up getting it when it drops to around £15
@ymagre @ShogunRok
My game breaking bug is I can't get out of a conversation with a Japanese npc. (won't spoil who) so everytime I press ⬜ Square... V keep talk to him.. Even when I am doing quest. And picking things up.. I can only hear V dialogue keep repeating the same sentence. I can't get away from it. Tried everything fast travlt.. Waited even when the phone is toyjoy..
@Ridwaano it's funny I've had no game breaking issues at all on pro. The worst I had was slow loading textures before first patch and the cross hairs not changing from the tank thing until reloading
@Gremio108 wait, are you saying CDPR isn’t a big boy?
@LordSteev
Atleast Xbox has a little better refund policy but ya
@UltimateOtaku91 ha! Same. I actually bought it but returned it still unopened simply because I didnt want to support these liars.
@Gaming365247 think I read somewhere they let you play it for up to 2 hours? seems like a good policy.
I'm wondering if they do add it back to the Playstation Store, if they make it non-refundable with a warning of purchase at your own risk? I saw many on social media keeping the game until they beat it and then returning it. I'm wondering how Sony handles the refunds moving forward.
My guess is as good as yours, but I'd bet on June 2021 re-release in PS store.
There is a lot to be fixed, although I've already finished my 100 hour long take successfully on ps4 pro.
@ymagre The game breaking bug was last gen consoles 😬
Cdpr from hero to zero.
I've no doubt this game will be fixed and may even exceed everything we saw in the 2018 trailer.
But wow how the mighty have fallen and I don't think there reputation will ever reach the heights they once were.
They have a lot of work to do imo.
Not missing, removed due to CDPR being lying pricks. There is a difference.
@LordSteev If anything the most annoying thing for me is when one of the fixer/used car salesmen calls me when I'm right in the middle of a conversation with a deal I just cant refuse...
Those Joytoys on JigJig Street?
@ApostateMage
No comment. 😛
@Robinsad @LordSteev Agreed, the difference in this situation is probably the refund conversation. Besides, what was I thinking - as if Ubisoft would ever use such a consumer-friendly word as "refund"
@trueflameXP Ha, I suppose I am being a bit snide to CDPR there. But you know what I mean, a developer with a history of more than one console hit
How is this game banned from the ps store when games like ANTHEM, which broke consoles, were never removed? I'm not saying it shouldn't be removed from the shop, I'm saying many other games should be removed until they are playable.
Just my opinion but I have been playing it on PS5 and it is a phenomenal game. It has some bugs and there are not that many people in night city but I have never had the game crash, graphics need a fine tuning but other than that it is a highly underrated game if you own a PS5. I imagine it runs horribly on ps4 though...
@Rhaoulos I’ve been wondering this too. The reality is probably that CDPR angered Sony in a special kind of way for a variety of reasons and Sony flexed it’s muscle in the most extreme way it could.
In my dream world, Sony realized the true potential of Cyberpunk and removed it from the store so they could work with CDPR behind the scenes and help them best realize their ambitious vision on Sony’s platform: a true next gen showcase for the SSD, like a phoenix rising from the ashes.
I like my dream world
Edit: I do think that Sony made the right decision here. It will be better for the industry as a whole.
@EdmereDethallow I can only speak from my experience with it, but honestly, if I had played it away from all of the current controversy and hullabaloo I would have been shocked upon learning of it all. The game absolutely has some rough edges but I would be surprised by the extent of the discourse. Just my experience though.
I've had the game crash a handful of times on PS5 (I save frequently so it's not much of an issue, Apex Legends crashes more lol) but there's nothing game-breaking at all and I've been enjoying the game a lot, can't speak for the PS4 but I dunno why it couldn't be on the PS5 store...
Get GeforceNOW for $5 and play it there (with RayTracing) or wait for a PS5/XSX version.
Take it from someone who finished it once and now in a new game+
Playing Cyberpunk on a PS4 is like playing Witcher 3 on the Nintendo Switch. It is not worth it. You are not getting the real experience.
Good, serves them right for trying to take us for a ride.
I’m going to put this out there, the idea of them taking us for a ride and being liars baffles me, it’s not like they could keep it a secret for nice it was out there and they have issued refunds. They massively underestimated how much they could get done in a patch for the date they said, and their rep has taken a hit from it. But this is effectively their 4th game, and was in a pandemic I can understand what’s happened even if I don’t like it. Some people seem to have anger issues though.
When they release those two patches then they'll put it back
@Mega-Gazz it's on sale on disc right now. Was 30 bucks yesterday on Amazon but now I think its 35. Almost pulled the trigger but I really want all my games this gen to be digital.
@Cleric22 yea, at this point I don’t know where I would even keep a disk-based game. How Gauche.
@Jimmer-jammer I too like your dream world. You can also add everyone as a trillionaire, no work, no illnesses and 1000 year lifespans of pure happiness for humans and it wouldn't be any less plausible.
I am pretty sure it has to do with CDPR openly offering refunds. Sony likes it's money and doesn't want to give it back. This is the major difference with other trainwrecks they have on the ps store. That and the fact that Cyberpunk 2077 broke some pre-order records.
good. glad i got mine tired of hearing people wine about it XD
@Rhaoulos Yeah CDPR offering refunds without speaking to Sony and MS clearly put them in a difficult spot as they had everyone demanding them despite not agreeing to anything. I think them removing the game was less revenge on CDPR and more to stop people buying it and then asking for a refund.
@WallyWest That the most logical explanation. I'd still support the temporary ban of all broken games until they are fixed, or simply a proper quality check before release.
playing this on series x and ps4 pro see more issues on ps4 pro , sometimes work towards my advantage once had a car flip on to a couple of malstrom and exploded no idea how that happened lol will be getting this on gog when its half price or a good percentage off on sale lol
Sony is still issuing refunds for the game. As tight as Sony usually is with refunding games, I do not expect to see this game return for awhile.
