The beauty of a big sandbox is that you can travel in many different directions, but open world games tend not to take advantage of their settings, forcing you to follow a point on a compass. Ghost of Tsushima, the upcoming PlayStation 4 samurai exclusive from Seattle-based developer Sucker Punch, will diminish the importance of the staple system – giving you the freedom to discover its world.
“We really want you to have that choice of, ‘Hey, that cool bamboo forest over there, I really want to check it out. I want to head in that direction and see what it is,’” art director Jason Connell said. “There’s no waypoint. There’s nothing that says, ‘Go here and look at this bamboo forest.’”
It’s unclear from the quote whether the title will remove waypoints entirely, but it definitely sounds like the developer wants to give you the freedom to go off the beaten path. It’s perhaps worth mentioning that this information is all taken from a 2017 interview, so the details could have changed – but judging by the title’s latest trailer, there’s no doubt we want to get lost in its historical world.

I mean, it’s not like that hasn’t been done before. Hell, GTA San Andreas was the first game I remember feeling like true freedom and that was almost 15 years ago. Skyrim in 2011 felt like a living breathing world too with limitless possibilities. This might expand on those ideas but at the end of the day, it’s incrementation rather than innovation.
Isn't the article a bit old hat considering it was a quote from the time the game was announced?
We'll see. That certainly sounds promising, of course. I love games that respect and reward player curiosity.
Everything Looks amazing so far. I'll be checking out that bamboo.
Usually only stick with an open world if the world is as compelling as the characters and narrative. This seems to have it all.
My body is ready...
I would love it if they did remove them. It's great when a game is designed so well that the environment guides you, as it were. Ghost of Tsushima is my most anticipated game right now and their design philosophy is really exciting.
@nessisonett Ah Yes San Andreas true freedom until you tried to leave the city before the game told you to and you had everything just short of the military after you lol
I do hope it’s more Breath of the Wild and less Assassins Creed. Optimistic, but wait and see!
My anticipation could not be greater.
@Areus Back when SA first released it felt like a massive step up from anything else. As much as previous GTA games had open worlds, SA had countryside and 3 cities. Yeah, you couldn’t go to all of them at the start but once you had the whole map it felt like a true world rather than interspersed levels.
@Mellkor Fantastic. That's all I needed to know.
I think taking a page out of Metro Exodus and Assassin's Creed Odyssey's book would be great. I loved how those games didn't feature waypoints (you could turn them on if you wanted) but instead wanted you to listen to the characters telling you where to go and follow their directions. If provided a sense of real immersion and discovery.
Im so hyped for GoT , off topic but I wonder what are the chances for a special edition PS4 Pro 🤔
@PSfanboy1992 I would say pretty high. I’m expecting to see special editions for both The Last of Us: Part II and Ghost of Tsushima next year. Possibly FFVII as well.
Oh dear.... I didn't realize it was an open world game!.... I......... I looooove open world games!!! Holy cow, an open world samurai game! No wonder people are so excited about this! How did i miss that lol
Yep, I think I am going to try and wait till I get my hands on a day 1 PS5 to play next years exclusives. It looks like April alone has enough releases to last me till 1st November. Its going to be a expensive Xmas. Game Pass is now unmissable to me, and even though I have it on PC right now, I'll be picking up a Xbox shoe box edition and a PS5 on release. I'll will have GoT and TLoU-2 ready to go day 1
I'm actually more "excited" with this game than with cyberpunk.. The fps thing kinda killed a little the vibe. And also the bullet sponge stuff..
Still looking forward to play both, but at this time, If I had to pick one, I would start with Ghost of Tsushima.
@Churchy yeah I agree, it’s sometimes fun to not have your hand held.
In other games like say Far Cry, those markets are kind of essential
@Gmork___ I also didn’t realise this. The info has been pretty scant on this game in general
@AdamNovice yeah a bit strange
