Oh Nioh! Team Ninja's critically acclaimed Souls-like samurai escapade couldn't overcome the continued success of Grand Theft Auto V, meaning that the legendary Rockstar release is now the fifth title since tracking started in the UK to secure 12 spells at the summit. It's in esteemed company alongside the likes of, er, Zumba Fitness and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Actually, the latter was great on PSone.
To its credit, Nioh did top the charts based on revenue β owing to its steep asking price β and was able to overcome last week's front-runner Resident Evil 7. FIFA 17 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare rounded out the top five, with familiar favourites like Battlefield 1 and Rocket League appearing elsewhere. Do you think that word of mouth will keep Nioh hanging around, or is it going to drop like it's got the chop?

Still a strong start for a new IP, still can't believe GTA5 is still selling, surprised Black Ops 3 isn't on there!
@stocko I guess most Call of Duty sales are pushed towards Infinite Warfare these days.
Bloody hell, it's almost unbelievable GTA 5 is still selling so well
and then I remember it sold 75 million units.
I'm really not surprised that GTA5 has sold the numbers it has, though I'm not a big fan personally, I just can't comprehend how it didn't sell all those numbers earlier on.. Who is waiting 3-4 years to buy this game? I expect some people to be late to the party but enough to keep it at number 1? And I understand the remaster hasn't been out as long (although still 2 years this month?) Bizarre!
Not bad for a niche titles, I think it will sell more compared to bloodborne, there are way more ps4 now.
@kyleforrester87 I think it's new ps4 owners that buy it.
It's 2017, who the f hasn't played GTA 5 yet? LoL
It would be nice to see a list based on revenue as well as sales numbers. I remember playing who wants to be a millionaire on a console, don't recall which version but it was pretty good.
Gta's sales are probably heavily supported by kids that are now deemed old enough by their parents to play the game.
@kyleforrester87 I've not really cared since Vice City, I want a remaster. Never gonna happen.
I think GTA is just such a recognisable name that pretty much everyone who owns a PS4 will pick it up sooner or later. Players who keep up with games will know that it released a long time ago but there are still a lot of people who don't pay that much attention. They'll see a new Grand Theft Auto on the shelf and pick it up, because hey, it's Grand Theft Auto.
Even Call of Duty doesn't quite have that. Because a new one comes out every year, they're more disposable. Fans will be there day one, and then some players who wait around will probably just wait for the next CoD to turn up. And then there's the majority who will just buy whatever the latest Call of Duty on the shelf is.
In short, the sheer strength of the GTA name - which most people, gamers or not, will recognise - and the fact that numbered sequels are few and far between equals consistent sales. That's what I think, at least. At this point, GTA VI could be a slice of dodgy ham in a game box and it would still sell millions.
GTA 5 must sell so many systems. There are thousands of newcomers to PS4 every week that will pick it up as one of their first purchases.
@Neolit when RDR2 pops out?
I feel that the permanent black Friday price cut has made the game affordable for less affluent consumers.
Is Take Two doing some sort of money laundering by buying their own copies of GTAV with illegal money and then reselling them elsewhere? Would be oddly fitting.....
I believe large amount of the sales of gta5 is down to is PS store sale . If you bought the game for 25 quid you got 2.5m on the online game . Lots of people rebought it
I'm just glad Nioh got anywhere in the top 10, especially for the type of game that it is.
I must admit, I do love GTA V, but it would be nice if another game took the number 1 spot. I guess we'll have to wait until Red Dead Redemption 2 for that one. Perhaps we should take bets as to what will knock it off the number spot?
Shame as there are so many better games out there.
@kyleforrester87 weirdly I don't think many are actually buying for the game, if GTA online was a separate entity I doubt GTA V would return to the charts. I have a few friends on PSN who just play this all the time, personally I couldn't think of anything worse, I'd much rather have new experiences.
Still good to see the excellent Resident Evil up there, now just to finish madhouse
@Neolit Haha thanks, I had my coffee this morning so I'm on point!
Sainsbury's was selling the PS3/ 360 version of the game for Β£5 so I guess that helped.
Hitting #2 as a PS4 exclusive with RE7 as competition is great maybe it'll keep up the pace until Zero Dawn releases. I couldnt be happier with Nioh, still trying to figure out which weapon types are best for my playstyle.
the next 4 weeks will be gaming bliss
@AFCC
I never played GTA5... I just dont like GTA. Never did. i am Probably the only one in the whole world lol.
Most of these sales will be for the PS4 version unsurprisingly and from these sales I'd imagine you would be dropped in to a full online freeroam session? This isn't the case with the XB1 version, every session I join I'm lucky to be dropped in with 20 other players but more often than not it's actually less.
Now that GTA IV is backward compatible on XB1, I bet even that's going to see a sale increase.
Just Dance 2017 still hanging in there in the full list! It's on its 4th month already. Less new releases these days so people buy more old games?
From what I've heard, GTA5 is one of the top choices for new PS4/Xbox owners, hence why it never goes away.
@Bebob Oh boy xD you should try to give it a chance
Well the fact that 75 milion people bought the game, and that GTA5 is still in top 10 best selling games nearly every week IS pretty impressive. So maybe i am missing out. I will try it out.
How many of us would've honestly guessed Nioh would chart in the top 10, let alone top 5, in the UK even once? I don't think many. I wouldn't have. This is nice to see. Even Yakuza Zero I believe cracked the top 10 for a week. Another game I wouldn't have predicted being able to do so.
GTA: Online is the reason GTAV is still selling.
@FaultyDroid You can transfer your save from 360 or PS3 as well, I think. I know that for a friend of mine the better graphics and higher player count in the PS4 version was a big motivation for buying a PS4.
I bet Rockstar buys them all themselves to Keep it relevant until GTA6 Shows up lol justkiddin
@FaultyDroid
Some interesting admissions and bemused comments on why GTA 5 is still being purchased abs leading the charts on next-gen hardware.
In my eyes, GTA Online (note the distinction) is arguably the greatest game in the history of gaming.
Lower those eyebrows, guys. The apparently 'revered' and 'phenomenal' games release since Rockstars' Magnum Opus leave a lot to be desired by this gamer. Bloodborne? Still a one-trick pony from the excellent Demons Souls. Witcher 3? Face it, the text-heavy bizzaroness and poor combat screams of AA rather than AAA. Just two examples.
GTA Online? Firstly, on PS4 it's STILL technically the most impressive sandbox title around - 3 years later. More pertinently, however, is the MMO / RPG and playability standard of its FPS and driving mechanics.
It's online world, where you effectively create cinematic stories with friends, via crews or messing about looking to do drive by's, or take issue with a particular opponent with whichever method you like, is currently the greatest proponent of sharing a world. Add the CEO and general career path from previous GTA story campaigns into GTA Online, and I for one am absolutely addicted once again. Even the Rockstar Director mode and vehicles / sense of identity is sheer manna from heaven.
Time to take cover with the Special Carbine, snipers exist within these forums π€
@Galvatron I was surprised no one here had already suggested it. R* recorded an all-time record no. of players in Dec'16. How many games can say that three & a half years after release.. & a last-gen title, too. The last three major updates have collectively been worth full game price IMO, yet all have been free. R* are onto a winner with this one.
@Wesker you can, but they've recently put a deadline on that now.
Well done GTA5, also mean's Nioh and Resi Evil probably didn't sell many copy's at all, no number's on that? Or would that not project the image you desire? I Hope they did well both are half decent i've heard.
@FaultyDroid - there seems to be a trend, even amongst so-called smaller, independent websites, to push the likes of Witcher 3 and Bloodborne into upper-class worship....I bought and then sold both of these alleged AAA games - and as an honest gamer of 30 years, I cannot fathom why they are so revered. I purchased Demons Souls on PS3 on import way back and whilst its difficulty was welcome back then, it was the labyrinthine structure and playability which struck - Dark Souls was a rip-off of that game (admittedly by same devs) and Bloodborne took all the excitement and exploration away to yield zero enjoyment. Witcher 3 is shocking in its number of GOTY medals - to me it does NO element of its world well, whereas GTA Online is pushing both technical and playability boundaries.
And you're right - all the DLC is free, and changed GTA Online into the most absorbing MMO out there. So many facets to the game. Want to just stealthily attack players atop buildings, ruining their missions and indulging in Heat-style gunplay, or heists? Do it. Stunt or normal races with Wipeout style Sky tracks? Ditto.
My favourite is teaming up with a crew member and after co-op missions, going after each other's import / export missions to steal each other's motors or blow up special cargo - there's nothing like it in ANY other game.
So let's get it right, GTA Online should be acknowledged WHY it's the best, god forbid Bloodborne 2 will probably win 'most original game' at E3 2017 next and be declared 'a smorgasbord of originality' π
