You can be sure a game's a big deal when Sony: a) Hires nerd culture icon Anthony Carboni to scream about; b) Rents a random set that's been made to look like a living room straight out of an American soap opera; c) Fills said studio with a leather couch that wouldn't look out of place in a stately home. The platform holder's checked all three boxes for No Man's Sky.
In this lengthy clip, there's a ton of gameplay footage for you to feast on, and if that's not good enough, then you can marvel at maker Sean Murray's new feral facial hair. The game continues to look gorgeous. "What do you do, though?" Well, what you see is what you get: you land on planets, mine them for resources, buy better gear, and visit more planets – all on your journey to the centre of the universe.

This keeps looking better and better. See you all at the centre of the universe in 25 years!
It looks abit bloody boring TBH. Infact l'm bored of the game already, and i aint played it yet. I'm sorry but there's just no real gameplay loop in this game. I've seen 3 or 4 "gameplay" videos of this game now, And i think if we're all brutally honest, then it really has very ilttle to offer in that respect. More of an "observation" game to me. The novelty will wear off quickly, once you realize every planet is essentially the same, except for varying climates...... It not really a game as such. More of a David Attenborough narrated DVD-rom.
@Bazza78 Thats because the Sean is only showing a demo build he built and is using the same area for each gameplay session. I agree the gameplay videos are get boring and he really needs to show more than just Balari V.
@justlink yeah but it's a worry. Afterall how can you vary planetary gameplay consdering we wont explore 99% of them?, i doubt each planet has it own different designer and gameplay loop!!, subsequently i'm expecting more of the same.
This still remains my number one game for this year. The sheer scope and art style have me hooked. I feel like I will be playing in Jodorowsky's Dune world. I do see the possibility of it getting a little repetitive, but this is a game I could put down for awhile and continue to come back to and explore. Can't wait.
I am for one stoked at this. Love the exploration bit. Seems a bit slow yes, but so was Spore and I played the hell out of that one, building my own creatures and ships and exploring and terraforming (yes...I am excited).
For a second there, I thought Sean Murray was John Krasinski.
Anyways, the game looks like fun. Would've been cool if they were some hostile creatures attacking Anthony, though.
I do hope there are some restrictions when it comes to naming both the planets and creatures, as well.
It looks utterly awesome but at the same time immensely boring! I'd like to know more regarding combat.
I really want to be excited for this, theres so much to like about it, but ultimately to just looks reeeeaaallly dull from moment to moment.
I was a skeptic at first, but the more I see, the more I want. Might just pre-order the limited edition...
@justlink Thanks for that info, this planet looked quite familar, but we've seen this one before then. Not really sure what the point of showing the same area is in a game that's supposed to be randomly generated. Show us some random generation if that's the entire selling point. I'll wait for some actual gameplay vids to see if this is a game I'm interested in.
I've been on board for this since the reveal. Amid all the fantastic-looking games coming this year, No Man's Sky really stands out as something totally different, and a game that is truly pushing boundaries and taking risks. @themcnoisy See you there, don't forget a towel!
@Quintumply Will do.
I wonder if any of us will bump into each other?
Definitely my most hyped game of the year. This actually looks like some of the ign footage that has been releasing lately. Regardless, it's awesome and it gonna be great. Glad I was able to snag a limited edition for the ps4! Looks like Sean is getting a little tired of people asking what do you do in the game? Did you catch that eye roll? Lol. Literally more ways to play this and more things to do than most AAA games out there, not sure why people are worried there will be nothing to do in the game.
This Anthony Carboni guy is seriously irritating.
Ehhh highly sceptical of this game despite the nice art style/sound track and general theme (which no doubt will keep me interested for a few hours at least). But can its randomly generated world stack up against, for example, the intricately designed spaces of Dark Souls? Very doubtful..
@SanderEvers My sole wish for this game is that, at the centre, is a giant, elaborate sign that simply reads, "42".
@Quintumply Haha! Seriously, though, I'm very curious to see what the payoff's going to be.
@themcnoisy Your not planning to go as the crow flies then
I intend to play this like I would Elite, so the scope of the game is incredible (if it pans out as Sean is selling it!) The type of creatures you encounter are meant to get bigger & more dangerous the closer you get to the centre of the universe & I'm also interested to see how far you can upgrade/customize your ships/guns/suit. Gonna (try to) hold out for reviews. Best case scenario, you will only be limited by your imagination, worst case scenario, a upgraded version of Elite.
@kyleforrester87 Yeah & Rocket League isnt Metal Gear Solid. You cant compare two completely different games against each other. NMS is about the vastness & flexibility.
I might be tempted to go away from the center. Go where no man has gone before or will go.
@Elodin Your gonna buy street fighter 5?
People have to realize that they are not going to show off all the coolest stuff and best planets that reside closer to the center of the galaxy. They need to keep things under wraps, not show it all before it even releases. What we do know is their will be some sort of chat system in game for friends, also some sort of sharing or trading mechanic, dog fights in space and above planets, fps sequences, crafting for upgrading your weapon, suit, and ship, space trading, space pirating, vast exploration above ground, below ground, and underwater, alien languages to learn, and finding and naming planets, animals, plants etc., and more things we don't know. What makes it cool is that you can achieve the goal of getting to the center in so many ways.
Sean previously stated that one person on the team spent their entire time traversing ONE planet to gain the elements needed to trade and upgrade their gear enough to travel deep into the universe. He admittedly said that would be a hard path to take but it is possible. Don't want to trade and search for material? Then you can buy a ship made for speed and fighting and attempt to steal everything you need from space freighters.
Wanna be an explorer? Then you can spend your time exploring new places and gaining the currency given for finding new blueprints to do your upgrades. The freedom is what makes this game great. It won't be for everyone and Sean has said that these 20 minute videos would represent almost 2 hours in real time playing. You have to make your ammo, your shield and everything, it is a survival sim. I for one am amped.
@themcnoisy possibly down the road. I have many other games to get to first, this one included.
@Nifty Obviously they are two different styles of games, but my point is (and this is a concern that's been covered by many people, even above, so sorry to repeat) randomly generated environments typically become repetitive very quickly, and the objectives that the designers are able to squeeze into the worlds are limited when they don't have a clue what the world is even going to look like. Beyond exploring these environments and fetch quests in the form of resource gathering I'm not sure what the long term hook is going to be. As I said, I'm sure It'll be fun for a few hours, maybe even a little longer, but I really doubt the experience will be as fulfilling as one set in a carefully crafted world, regardless of the game, Dark Souls being my previous example. Half Life 2 would be another.
I've been dreaming of a game like this for decades. I just wonder how many previously discovered planets and species i'll come across named after various bodily function parts?!
@get2sammyb
A black monolith, trippy colour tunnel and a french rennaissance room where you keep seeing older iterations of yourself?
@ApostateMage
Yeah, the only thinig that could make me more excited was if there were multiple victory conditions ala Civilisation,
i.e;
travel to centre of universe is a an ultimate win
find enough unique flora and fauna to help scientists treat a disease - medical win
Find enough planets with a high correlation to Earth to be a colonisation win
raise enough swag to be the baddest pirate in the galaxy - yaargh win.
Still, exploring space, setting my own goals, I can't wait! It might not be very good, but like a lot of subjective things, the concept appeals to me, so I'll probably get a good level of enjoyment out of it.
@Elodin anyone else think that this is the extraterrestrials seeing the effect we would have when we go into space!!!!
@Elodin sorry man was a joke. You said you were venturing to where no man has gone before - due to sf5 terrible sales I thought it would be funny. :/
It might sound a bit weird but I'm actually kinda glad that NMS is splitting opinions as much as it is. It's not gonna be the game for everyone, but it's absolutely the kind of experience I adore, so I'm ridiculously excited. I get the feeling that the more people that are put off, the more I'm likely to enjoy playing with the people I do encounter.
@SegaBlueSky I hope it's good and honestly I reckon there is enough there to justify a purchase and certainly will be doing that. I just don't know if it'll be the game some are touting it will be.
@kyleforrester87 It sounds like it wont be a game for you then if you think its just going be collecting resources. I'm sure I don't need to reiterate the whole be a space pirate/trader, upgrading ships/guns, learning alien languages etc. rhetoric (as they have also been covered many times). For me, it is about the freedom to play the game as I want and not following a linear path, like the one Gordon Freeman walked and as did everyone that played HalfLife. I think the random generation could be the sticking point but we will see.This very well could turn out to be the video game equivalent of Marmite (other yeast spreads are available). A lot of people are going to be waiting for the reviews for NMS & it could go either way. Fingers crossed its a must buy!
@get2sammyb I've heard quite a few theories about what's at the centre. Some are even saying that it'll unlock fully fledged multiplayer! Not sure about that.
All that Sean Murray has said is that the centre will represent a natural place to put down the pad, but that there's something there that will give you reason to keep playing.
I don't know what it's going to be, but I can't wait to find out.
@themcnoisy oh haha! Completely missed that one. As in down the road I mean bargain bin. I still don't own a fighting game. Maybe in a year and after many updates it will be fun for $15.
It's a game that I want to play but expect to get bored of relatively quickly.
Will probably wait until it's on sale.
Woohoo
That Carboni guy is beyond annoying.
@Grawlog As far as I understand it, this isn't an MMO at all. It's a single player game which, if you go online, has some limited online functionality. You can play this fully offline if you want. You can name stuff like planets etc, and if you go online, it'll share that with players that happen to see it. They've said they want the game to hint at the idea of other people existing in the galaxy but that the focus is entirely on your own journey and adventure. I guess there are save points to add another layer of difficulty to the survival, and as the game is totally playable offline, it makes sense that they exist. If you do play offline though, you won't ever see any player-made names for things.
I can see where the confusion might come in though!
