According to CD Projekt Red's latest financial report, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt sold through more than 6 million units in its first six weeks on the market. Perhaps an expected result for a title that's received such high praise and a solid marketing campaign, but it's a great statistic for a bloody good game regardless.
The company posted a profit of around $63 million for the first half of the year, while Geralt's latest escapade cost a rather hefty $82 million to create – not a truly gigantic amount, but a lot of money all the same. It's unknown whether or not the Polish studio's managed to make up the difference by taking on lucrative monster hunting contracts, though.
Well deserved, or did you expect higher numbers? Buy yourself a new horse in the comments section below.

"lucrative monster hunting contracts?" I don't get it. XD
But tbh I was expecting more. This game was pushed and pushed and pushed and its across a solid 3 platforms with a very large install base across them. 6 million even on PS4 alone isn't exactly great with around 23 million of that one console in users homes.
Any news on which system it sold best? That would be an interesting statistic to see if install base matches sales in some way.
Is 60 million dollars alot or kind of in the middle?
I very very very much hope that CD Project made a significant profit with this game. Witcher 3 is clearly lovingly crafted and I would like to see more such games from them.
Six million copies in six weeks is ridiculous - a massive success. However, it shows how crazy this industry has gotten where you need to sell more than that to break even. I also disagree with @ShogunRok that this wasn't a "gigantic amount" - it's a colossal amount of money. Unfortunately, the budgets are only going to get higher and higher.
@get2sammyb I think you'll find that I wrote "TRULY gigantic amount". MISQUOTED!
LAWYERS!
Wow, that's pretty amazing! Seeing this article has reminded me of one thing though - @ShogunRok I fear you may not have played The Witcher 3 for quite as long as you thought after all! I was googling for how to find out my total play time, and there are forum posts left right and centre reporting that the in game counter is bugged, and counts significantly more time than people have actually played (eg somebody starting the game and playing for about 4-5 hours, but the counter reading double that). Speculation is that it might be counting game hours (hence potentially significant increases if you meditate a lot), rather than real time, so that 500+ hours might not be the case after all!
That's a lot of shells
Six weeks is a month and a half and this is 3 months old, so I wonder what the lifetime sales are.
Whenever I upgrade to any of the twin consoles, this and Arkham Knight will be among the first games I get. Gotta love multiplats.
@sinalefa Both fantastic shouts. Add Bloodborne to that list and you've got strong contenders for the best 3 games on the console.
@SteveButler2210 hmm interesting. I had the feeling it was counting the hours where the game should have been suspended while the system was in rest mode, but maybe it's this instead.
@SteveButler2210 I've read stuff like that too, so I'm not sure what to think. It's easily over 200 though, which is more than enough!
