Re: Game of the Year: #1 - Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

I have to say I’m disappointed in you guys. I know, I know, it’s all a matter of opinion. Still, I just can’t see why E33 here is so widely accepted. It kinda stinks, dudes. I’m not even trying to be a bully. I gave it a real chance. Made it all the way to the giant puppet guy before I just said “boooring.” Funny thing to me is, I liked a lot of the things it gets dinged for and hated so many of the things it’s lauded over. It felt like an N64 game map wise, and I mean that in the worst way. It’s not a lack of a minimap that ruins it, rather the poorly designed area maps in the first place. I really enjoyed the combat systems and the turn based parts, but the story is ham fisted and tired, the graphics follow the same old color rules, and the cool parts are ripped straight from Persona. It’s just so meh. I keep hearing people raving about the story and style and voice acting and all I can think is “did y’all not play Dispatch!?!?” I think Dispatch deserves the top ranking this year, but there are so many other games that fit in between those rankings. Lumines and Katamari come to mind. I’m not trying to be a poop, and I’ve been a contrarian for all of my 49 years on this garbage rock, but if we are judging based on story, acting, and music, Dispatch is the clear front runner in my book. But that’s just like, my opinion, man.

Re: Yooka-Replaylee Narrows Release Window, Still Wide on PS5

I backed this way back then. I wanted to help make one of my favorite games come back to life. Played the demo and never went back. Read some nasty reviews, heard a lot of mixed ratings based on all kinds of things I didn’t care about. Stayed away and never saw the full potential I was offered on GoFundYourself. Willing to try it out now. The actual joy of playing Banjo Kazooie deserves reiteration.

I really can’t say enough good things about Olliolli world. I bought it day one because the first two were really fun for me, but I wasn’t expecting the huge leap in accessibility. It’s hard in the best way and it really encourages you to keep trying. As an old geezer who grew up on NES, this game is so up my alley. Probably my favorite game of last year and a top 20 all time. No way I’m 100%ing it… way too hard, but I feel comfortable enough with my prowess nonetheless. It’s a real keeper. I’ll probably never beat that bear to the finish line, but I’ll still try periodically. It’s really worth checking out, and it’s awesome that it’s “free” so soon after release. I rarely find myself in the comments section unless I’ve had one too many, but do yourselves a favor and give this guy a chance. I’m actually mostly sober right now.

Re: Soapbox: I'm Sorry, But Your Cute Cat Game Isn't That Great

I absolutely agree, but I have to say it is refreshing to be playing as a seriously fully realized cat. It shouldn’t be. In this day and age, it surprises me how much this is making waves. I’m an old ass man and I’ve been playing dumb games since the vic20. I got as excited about this as everyone else and it’s adorable and all, but it seems crazy to me that our ideas about what constitutes something new in gaming comes from a different avatar in the same basic plane as everything else. I’ve been on the same ride as everyone else since the late 70s, but I kinda hoped by now we’d be more evolved. I think the hope I’ve always had for games is to put me into a place that wasn’t possible in real life. Being a bird sounds fun. Being a fish sounds fun. Things I can’t do myself, but virtual reality can try to fulfill. I wanted so much more from Stray, but it may as well have been a human avatar instead of a cat. I’m not trying to be a pill about it. It’s cute and nice. That friggin’ kitty is adorable. I don’t think this is a bad game, just a decent indie same old thing. I like being a kitty. I just don’t think it’s anything to write home about. To be fair, my dog is completely fooled, and is pretty sure that’s a real cat up there. She is transfixed, and is the real winner here.
